Oops! Forgot the rest of the info...I'm the mom of a 20 year old, wonderful young man with ADD. I also have ADD although I didn't know it until we had our son and I became familiar with it's characteristics. Enough about me...I just want to know how I can further help my son deal with his ADD. He just moved to Wyoming to start school and with all the changes that moving involves, he's having trouble with his ADD and I'd like to be able to help him...only I don't know how. I was hoping by sharing in the forum some of you might give me some ideas!

Hello all. I'm Nancy in Mesa, and my (almost) seven year old has been diagnosed with ADHD. I'm looking for moral support (my mom doesn't buy the diagnosis), and places where I can get him help. He's currently on Concerta, and we just recently had to up the dosage because it wasn't as effective as it had been.

I'm Sarah (please, call me Paws), and I currently live in Rhode Island. But soon, I'll be living in a town near Phoenix, AZ (not sure which town yet). We'll be moving in a couple of months, so I thought I'd introduce myself here :)

LOL, you don't want rain! Here in RI, it's been nothing BUT rain. We finally have a peek of sun out, and puddles everywhere.

I'll do a rain dance for you guys though when I come out ;) (probably around May so that me and my family can check out houses)

Dave here. I put a long intro on the main "new members" thing a few days ago, so I won't go thru it all again.

I'm in Tucson. Moved here from Colorado almost 2 yrs ago.

I'm trying Strattera (tried it a few years ago), and I can already tell I don't like the side effects. So I'm self-titrating it til next visit with the doc.

I wish I'd seen the listing of local clinicians sooner. That's very cool.

There is SO MUCH on this site, it's kind of difficult for a newbie like me to figure it all out! I'll keep snooping.

Hot enough for ya???

My name is Sean from the planet Chandler and I have Aspergers Disorder. I have coped with quite well concidering I only found out a few months ago that I was diagnosed with this when I was a kid. My son Sean Jr. also has Aspergers so I guess the mystery of weather or not its inherited is solved. Now I am on a journey to help my son deal with this unexpected addition to his life as well as my own. Im trying to find as much reading material as I can from the library but every thing is checked out and in addition to not having much money to go out and buy any of theese books, im on a waiting list that ends some where arround the Atlantic Ocean (I live in Arizona.) If any one has any ideas or web sites that can give me more information about Aspergers and teenagers it would be greatly appriciated.

Sincerely
Sean

Welcome, Sean. You will find a world of information and support here.

I just got a library card yesterday. The library system here in Pima County has a great online "card catalog" of their resources. The books I wanted weren't at the library closest to me, but the system allows you to have them routed to which ever library you want. They then contact you (by email, by phone, or by some other way which I forgot) when it's there so you can pick it up. If the book (or DVD or whatever) is checked out, it tells you when it's due. If you're the first on the list, it gets routed to your library.

So I have 3 books related to ADD that I've requested. I'm hoping the system works as well as it sounds like it should. Yes, I wanted them "right now" but I'll just try to be patient.

I know you're not in Pima county, but I suspect that your county (Maricopa?) has something very similar.

If you want to look at Pima's system, the site is:
http://librarycatalog.pima.gov

Another resource down here in Tucson for books is at the "swap meet" (it's a flea market) at Tohono O'odham. There is one "permanent" book seller - they have their own building. If you come down to Tucson on weekends you could check there. Note that their hours are listed as 5am until whenever and in the summer it's pretty much done by 1PM because of the heat. Here's a list of Arizona flea markets that may be useful in finding something closer:

http://www.arizonaautismsupport.org/
http://www.autismcenter.org/
http://apn.150m.com/default.html

I also know a very good play therapist who takes many different insurances, and has a sliding scale for those who don't have any.

The unfortunate thing is that AZ doesn't recognize that Asperger's is a form of AS, so all that great AS services we could have access to we don't. The good news is that AZ will require insurances companies to cover medically needed therapy by early next year.

Hi!

I'm Misty, 31 years old and I live in N. Phoenix.

I was diagnosed informally by my family Dr as a teenager with ADHD. Then after a long journey of untreated ADHD I arrived in front of my current GP. She had the same informal diagnosis. I'm now on Adderall XR. I only just started it on Saturday. I have an appt for a formal testing and more particular diagnosis on 12/22.

I'm married with 2 daughters. My 7 y.o. daughter is currently in therapy and we will have a formal diagnosis after her full eval on 1/08. It's HIGHLY probable that she has ADHD (hyper, impulsive) and Anxiety just as I do.

Hi! I am in Maricopa (the city, not the county:D!). I am a 31 YO mother of 2. I am not officially diagnosed yet, and had not even considered adult add untill I was quitting a stay at home job I really enjoyed after only one month because I was to focused on the job and my house was falling apart around me. As I was putting the things from the job in the closet where I hide all of the projects and crafts and supplies that were never finished or not even touched I realized I might have a bigger problem. For some reason ADD popped into my head.

I got online and started researching, then I went bought 3 books at the store and then I hyperfocused and read and reasearched for a week. I fit everything for Inattentive ADD. I could list it all here, but this would turn into a novel! Long story short, my son (5 yr old) is also displaying symptoms of adhd and I need to find a specialist in the east valley. I have looked at the lists and directories. My insurance company was no help. I keep getting lost in the details, then distracted.

Anyway, anyone have a reccomendation for a family adhd specialist? Please? My son is hyper and I am Inattentive so we have been butting heads ALOT:o.

Hello Misty
I am Gordon, and have a grandaughter ( 7 years old) diagnosed with ADHD.I hope this will be useful information for you or any other forum member that needs it.
In February 2006 she suffered an episode of generalized clonic convulsions that lasted for 20 minutes.
That same day she had an EEG and is diagnosed with Epilepsy.Began treatmentwith valproic acid 5 cc every 8 hours.
Ten days later an RMN was done with no abnormalities.
In March another EEG also showed no abnormalities.
Middle 2006 the diagnosis was corrected to ADHD and is started with
RITALIN.Slight improvement was noticed and medication was withdrawn for summer holidays.(2 months)
Another EEG in february 2007 proved normal. At the start of school she showed symptoms of being antisocial, abulic and lack of attention. RITALIN
is restarted and profesional help is also added with a psycologist.
July 2007 her parents consult with a well known psychiatrist, and is asked
for a special urine study and the result showed a deficit of :
phenyetilamine
Adrenaline
noradrenaline
dopamine

She is then treated with nutrient supplements of presusor biogenic amins.
All other medication is withdrawn. On August 15 starts the new treatment
and by september ALL symptoms have dissapeared and up until today is doing just fine at school and her social life also.
MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL IS SHE IS FREE FROM THE USE O DRUGS THAT CAN BE DANGEROUS AND HAVE SERIOUS SIDE
EFFECTS.
We live in ARGENTINA and she lives in the Province of Mendoza besides the ANDES in the west.
Hope this will be of help and it is not the only case.
Best regards
Gordon

09-10-09, 04:14 PM
Hi, I'm Brody in Tucson AZ. Monastic because I am a frustrated copy editor/writer. I'm damn good at it when I can get down to business with it - but, well, you know the frustration whereof I speak. Also monastic because my social skills suck.

I'm re-posting this from the global Newbies list.

I am here because I've suspected for a few chaotic years that I may have ADD. Recently a guy in another forum elsewhere suggested I might have it (he has ADHD). I hit about 80% on the Adult and Children's symptoms lists I found online. Figured I would look further into the possibility.

What I have found so far is, "professionals" seem to disagree on diagnoses and pharmaceuticals appear to be the pat answer for everything; I'm not buying (BTDT).

My approach now is to study these forums, see if/where I fit in, contribute if I have anything useful to say, and try some of the ADD coping mechanisms, focusing skills, social skills, overwhelm remedies, etc. specific to channeling the ADD mind. I'll decide what to do next from there.

Thank You for letting me play.

Hello, I'm Glen in Flagstaff, father of a wonderful little girl, and husband to a wonderful Normal Thinking wife.
I was diagnosed in elementary (about 2nd grade) school and did the Ritilan thing for a while, until at 15, took myself off, got G.E.D., and decided I could 'Man up' and handle a short attention span.
At 29, really close to 30, unemployed with a family, failed/dropped mmy third attempt at college, and most friends/family/acquantences sick to def of my B.S., also facing impending divorce (again), I went to the doc again.
I'm on Adderall, 60 mg a day 20 am, 2 20's pm, and while it does work, it doesn't work fast enough or well enough for me most of the time. It also only seems to only take care of about half my symptoms, but I am looking into a self help rgimine for the rest as well.
I have been looking to see if there are any support groups or anything in No. AZ, so if anyone has any info pls let me know....
Uhmm... Oh, and btw, I am loving this forum, as since my diagnoses (or re-dignoses)I have run most people out of my life talking about it non-stop (I would stop if anybody else had something more interesting to say, but they never do :)), so its cool to find people in similar experiences.
