Diagnosed last summer. Having no fun at all trying to get an effective treatment, but at least I know I'm neither lazy nor willfully negligent.

I was diagnosed 8 months ago but have been on medication for depression and ADD symptoms for about 18 months. I now look back and smile when I recall all of the million thoughts that ran threw my mind all of my life and I thought it was just the way it was, my brain never stopped....wow, how nice it is to be able to sit back and not think of anything; once in awhile :)

So, are you taking anything yet? Are you hyper or, like me, more the low energy wallflower type?

charlie
09-06-04, 08:18 PM
Douglas,
been a week on zoloft
and yes I'm the low energy type, unless you count internal thoughts and spurts of high energy
kinda funny to find myself doing 180's at work trying to figure out what I should do next (priorities always hard for me--understatment)

douglasb52
09-06-04, 08:49 PM
I was on a combo of Zoloft and Wellbutrin for over a year. Then I weaned off Zoloft and stayed on Wellbutrin for another year. To be honest, neither turned out to be effective. Wellbutrin had almost no effect, despite the fact that I was on the highest dose and that it's a stimulant. Zoloft had a palpable effect, but overall I would say the effect was to make me less unhappy about my shortcomings, without removing or lessening them. That was not exactly what I was looking for. I now take Ritalin, which works better, and works almost instantly, but you have to play with dosage, and tends to work best in a "situational" sense for me. When I need to "task" or become priority based, I take it. When I have nothing I need to do, skip it. It's really kind of novel in that way. No waiting "two or three weeks...or forever" for it to work, like Zoloft, and especially those antidepressant dinosaurs, the dreaded "tricyclics."

Good luck, and keep in touch. You're welcome to email me privately.

charlie
09-06-04, 10:34 PM
Douglas,
I'm kinda leery of the Zoloft myself-- scary to take something that you have to wean yourself slowly from.
But willing to try for a month and see what happens.
Thanks for the reply!

Hi,

I'm Scattered from Butte County in northern California. I was dx with hyperactivity as a very young child, but thought I outgrew it, now at 44 it's back with a vengance. It is really messing with my life, especially since I'm a stay-at-home mom now. To make things more interesting my husband is ADD and my 7 year old daughter is ADHD. None of us are formally dx or on meds. My daughter and I are both in the high category for symptoms. All three of us have symptoms serious enough to impact our lives pretty significantly.

His 41 years old and I love him to death, but it's been strenuous. His inability to comminicate with me and his emotional distants he has with me is the core of our problems. Divorced parent strugglin with add/adhd ... severe lots of times ... you know how that goes

Have been on alot of stuff for it and sometimes remembered to take it ;~)

On Dex and had to stop the effexor ... I am always given stuff that defeats the purpose and makes me drowsy. I am looking for the right combo.

Doc is add/adhd, also. Searching for the right "career" as most of us are.

I am the reeeeealllly laid back type unless I am hyperfocusing on projects then I can not shut my brain down and can do marathon wonderwoman stuff.

Love the beach and believe that when I can afford moving there that I would be energized or either so laid back as to not care about the diagnosis and its non-friendly attributes!

douglasb52
05-23-05, 01:42 PM
Yeah I'm a little similar, very non-hyperactive to the point of narcolepsy at times. I also found the antidepressant/stimulant combos to be counter productive.

I take dexedrine alone. I like it. I also like a pattern of three weeks on and one week off. The body resets itself in an interesting way. I take 20 to 30 mg spread out through the day. Or if I'm doing some work in a creative vein (I write and do photography), I like to take 20 mg. all at once. The shift in consciousness is very remarkable.

Hi. I'm Bob. I'm 47, and I'm yet another person from San Diego. I was diagnosed with classic ADD/ADHD about 6 months ago, and have been on Wellbutrin, and then with Strattera added. Neither has seemed to have a great effect on me.

I just posted a tale of woe in the "Men with ADD/ADHD" forum, detailing my current life situation. I invite you over there to read it, and perhaps you can provide some support and assistance to me. Thanks.

I'm Eric...from Redding.

I've had ADHD since I was a child. Diagnosed as "hyperactive".

DOC: Cut out the sugar and no stimulation.
MOM: Riiiiight....

I'm 40 and in counseling for ADHD. No drugs...would put the kibosh on my flying career. The counselor was a last resort. Finally ran out of ways to deal with it on my own. That and I'm probably gonna be fired from my job. Wouldn't be the first time. Hopefully will be the last.

This Forum/Web Site is a God send. Finding and hearing from people who understand my life is a relief.

Good luck all of you on our fearfully, wonderful, messy journey called life.

My name is Cindy and I was diagnosed when I was a child. However my parents decided not to put me on medication and reveal to the school that I was ADD (Fear that I would be tracked away from college). I started having anxiety attacks as a 9th grader and they progressed increasingly the older I got and each time I would go to counseling and relearn strategies to relax. Eventually I went on antidepressants and then anti-anxiety medication and it sorta worked (this was about 4years ago). About 8 months ago I gave up trying to cope and went to a dr. and went on Wellbutrin XL. It worked okay but wore off to quickly. So the dr. added adderall XR and it worked great...minus the side effect of a dry mouth. About a month ago I started showing signs of depression but pushed it aside as another one of the adjustment periods of being "normal" again. Well it has gotten worse and I am now to the point of tears everyday and really noticing the impact on my professional relationships. I finally broke down wtih my fiance today and made him read all about depression after he tried to "fix it". We are good now and I think he really gets it. NOw I just can't wait to get to the dr. to see what I can do to feel better. I am seeing a therapist for premarital counseling tomorrow and I am thinking I might ask her for a reference for another counselor for the depression......ugh but that just means more things to do and added stress!! Thanks for letting me vent.

Hi all.

I thought i posted here already but I guess not...
I'm Susan, from L.A. Discovered ADD this spring, been reading everything I can about it, it explains so much about me and my life. (I've been previously treated for depression, but I'm NOT depressed, just frustrated for a long long time and frustration thwarted turned passive turns to depression IMO!) My new psychiatrist seems to agree, but she's not a specialist, I would like to get a more formal diagnosis, but she gave me ritalin and it seems to be helping, just started.

been on dexedrine since age 5, taken off at puberty, put back on at 27, thank god, or more specifically Dr. Walid Shekim of the Neurophychiatric Institute at UCLA. Live in Truckee, but my doctor is in San Francisco....long story. ADD is just part of my life, not a big deal although it would be without the meds. I think ADD is not all bad....depends on how you look at things. I am happy, healthy, in great shape and loving life.

Howdy yall. I recently found out about my ADD after changing careers from Writer/Editor to full-time mother.

It took a lot of doctors and diagnoses (post-partem stress, major depression, PTSD, anorexia, OCD, anxiety, fibromyalgia, and whatever else) but things are finally looking up.

Currently I'm working with a psychologist, a psychiatrist, and a marriage counselor in concerted effort to get myself back on track ({monster truck Larry voice}"X-Treme Therapy!!!"{/monster truck Larry voice}) .

Not on any drugs lately because being a pharamaceutical guinea pig is too much of a nightmare. Hoping to find my neurochemical neutral state (LOL) so I can start back up from there. Good sleep, nutrition and hydration helps.

I'm 53 and was diagnosed ADD in 1995 but prior to that I was diagnosed depressed and disthymic. Anyway, I'm still struggling and co-morbid.

My biggest pet peeve is that my psychiatrist doesn't seem to want to allow me to make suggestions on medications.

I've been reading about ADD, ADHD, depression, OCD, PTSD, etc. for at least 10 years off and on trying to fix myself.

Currently just restarted meds-Wellbutrin XL 300mg. It took the edge off depression, but isn't doing anything for the ADD.

I agree with happymonkey-my frustration with ADD has turned to depression and hopelessness when doctors won't listen to their patient. I need to find a new shrink.

Hi,
I'm Pam, 53, diagnosed with ADHD in January 2004. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area (Vallejo) and work in Oakland. Working on my phd (ABD) for twelve years and SO ready to be done with it but I can't follow a straight line for more than a day, not even to save my life! Had been taking Ritalin (half a dose) for the past two years but recently started taking homeopathic remedies instead. Not sure how that's working.
I get too many ideas, have trouble organizing them for other people (it's clear to ME!) but also creating a hierarchy of my ideas. I struggle with working memory problems (much lower than my aptitudes), distractibility, going off on tangents, organization. And I take on too many activities/commitments.
I'm also a speech-language therapist and I work with a number of kids who also have ADD, so it's a special interest of mine at work as well.

Hi everybody!Hello Pam,

You should be proud you've accomplished as much academically as you have. I know the dissertation is arduous to say the least (not from experience yet).

I am not a doctor, just a guy who knows a few things, but I would rethink substituting homeopathy for a proven ADHD treatment. If you quit Ritalin because it exaserbated your anxiety I understand but there is no evidence the homeopathy will help at all. Finding the right treatment with comorbidity can be difficult but with time and patience a balance can usually be found.

I look forward to your progress.

Joe from L.A. I was diagnosed as a child and was on meds briefly (don't remember what). I'm tired of this running my life. I'm 30 and I'm ready to get it under control.

A brief background (not looking for pity):
I dropped out of college with 1 year to go.
I can't sit in my seat for more than 10 minutes without going crazy.
My work is definitely affected.
Relationships are hard because of all of the above.
I have problems sitting down and doing things for myself, though when it comes to other people I get it done.
I'm totally disorganized.
I have trouble keeping jobs (which is embarassing at 30).

Any good Doctors in either The Sherman Oaks or Brentwood areas?

O.K.: introduction

Name: Michael
Age: 52
Location: longtime San Francisco resident (34 years)

I am a Viet Nam-era service disabled veteran ('73 - '75). I found this forum thanks to the V.A.'s online patient health service and its Medline Plus/N.I.H. search
regarding Adult ADD/ADHD. I'll finish my introduction and then explain the specific reasons for my search.

I suffered a spinal injury while in the Navy back in '75. I was also diagnosed with chronic pain disorder as well as recurrent Major Depression (partially treatment resistant) with PTSD, GAD. I was diagnosed with Adult ADD (with impulsivity) in '96. Once I received started recieving treatment with Ritalin I "magically" finished
a B.A. in Philosophy in 2 years at SFSU (with two minor degrees) and graduated "Summa..." which I had started and restarted repeatedly since '76.

What brought me here? For 11 years Ritalin has worked well for me but in the past year it seems like I fall asleep after I take my usual doses: 20 mg Ritalin SR
in a.m. and 20 mg SR at 2 pm. I'm not talking about "fatigue" -- what happens is that about a little over an hour after dosing I fall asleep HARD for an hour or so and don't seem to ever focus like I used to do at this dose. It seems like a paradoxical reaction to the drug but I don't have a past history of a sedative reaction to Ritalin. It's always worked well but the pharmacist suggests I may have developed a tolerance to Ritalin and may need to look at changing to Dextroamphetamine (which I took 5 years ago but in immediate release form it was too much of a roller coaster for me and I asked to go back to ritalin SR).

Unfortunately, I was told that a SR version of dextro is not a Veteran's Admin. Hospital formulary, hence, I'll have to make a strong case to get the VA to prescribe anything other than the short acting version. I'll check through forum topics but, in the meantime, has anyone ever developed a sedating response to Ritalin (SR)?

Thanks,

Mike

Mick

35 years old, Chino Hills (So Cal).

Diagnosed ADHD six years ago. Was first given Wellbutrin- sped up the heartrate too much (BP issues already). Went to Concerta, same issues. Then Strattera, made me nauseated. Took about three years or so w/o meds. Back on Concerta with minimal improvement.

Just recently started working full time for the first time in 7 years. Loved being a stay-at-home dad. My wife would like a chance to stay home, so I'm trying to work again. Have worked this job since I was a kid, loved it as it was mainly an outdoors deal where I was the supervisor (though part time). Got a promotion, now in the office, hate everything about it.

Browsing the site for advice, as the frustration has caused the rage inside to rear its ugly head for the first time in years. Went to Disneyland last night, got bumped a few times, and before I could think about it...I kicked someone a couple of times (while holding my 2 year old no less).

Thinking of joining a support group. Haven't had therapy yet, just talk with the psych for a half hour once every couple of months to see how the meds are doing.

Sorry for rambling.

If this helps at all, I'll try to keep up on it every month or so.

If I misspell something just send me a message describing the mistake and the needed correction.

If your location changes or you want to be more/less specific, let me know by messaging.

If the moderator or the majority of people here feel like we should exclude folks who haven't posted at ADDForums for a couple of years or so... let me know.

I also have not listed a couple of people who were vague about where they lived or if they actually moved to California afterall.

Finally, if the mod's want to make this a sticky that's fine with me as long as someone has access to edit it. I'll do it if there's a way that I can.
If you all just post your name and location in this thread I'll see it and add you to the list.

I have discovered that I cannot edit this list in my original post.
Besides, that doesn't really help when it will be buried somewhere down the line unless it becomes a sticky... hint, hint...

Name: Deborah

Age: Holding

Location: Ventura County

Diagnosed: At age 36, about the same time I found out I was pregnant with my second child.

Currently: Take Wellbutrin and looking for a decent ADD Doctor who isn't condescending to ADD women and can actually help. EMDR Cert preferable

I'm happily married 17 years with two beautiful, boisterous boys.

I'm a writer, community theater actress, voice over actress, was a music teacher (budget cuts), active in my community, clean air activist, volunteer... speaking of which, early morning fundraiser coming up quick and I need to catch some z's before 6:30.

Does anyone else do this? Stay up until the wee hours of the morning when you know you need to be rested for the next day? Why does trying to sleep make my eyelids fly open like window shades in the morning?

Ho hum.

Also, do the Santa Anna winds affect you and your mood? Just wondering.

Nice to virtually see/meet you all.

The entire thread is a sticky at the moment- I have no problems formatting this area in a way that is beneficial for those members using it - just drop me a PM and let me know the specific of what you have in mind - Please provide a hyperlink back to this area because I will not know which request goes with what area and to remember the names of those posting here . . . . hmmmmmm l probably isn't going to happen due to this swiss cheese memory of mine

Heather, new to LA. Dr. diagnosed ADD. No insurance. I fly to KS regularly to see my old dr. and get my prescriptions there, since without insurance, it's actually cheaper than paying to see a dr here every month.

if anyone has an affordable dr or non insured suggestions, I'm all ears.

California makes it really, really difficult to get medication, compared to other states......

Hello,
Several hours later I''ll explain what you are looking at in my note above. The fist portion is just me expressing in normal fashion. the second portion with the words not really representation of words so much but appearing to be many things to different persons looking at the jumble of letters in a row.
I have received a wide range of reactions if ever I decide to send a note and have a portion look like that above. Even todayy an occation of misunderstanding I don't have to mention the post number or the paragraph number as it is quite self evident what I am speaking of. I don't know how many ever I dared myself to release such a document to view let alone read. As you can get the jist of a thought within the the jumble. But whether it is human nature or our paranoid society in general. I have had anyone tell me what they think they see and correct. As I know what that jumble of letters came from. it came me and is more part of a processing and this portion of the process in me is a guide ...is a note taking process........ is a visual guidwe ///...,,,is a for you a first look at at thing y ou cannot see me doing over here ...;;[[.........what coomesss out is not relly meant for anyone else to see exccept foooooooort maaybe....myyg e n e t i v ooops g e n e n t y c .........ooopps g e n e t i c sibalings read,,,;;;-=. asi do t h i s ...more skow and easy someibe ti read...///; withm tone and rhythm over here that doooooooo notttseeeee.

I'm Stoid..thats my real life nickname. I'm 50 years old, I was diagnosed 5 years ago, and I've since realized that I have about the worst case of ADD I'm personally aware of. I'm female, I live alone, and I work for myself... all of which is incredibly bad for ADD, but what can ya do?

12-12-09, 11:58 AM
Since it looks like there is already a Cate (:::waving::: ), I will go by MCate. I'm in CA, and have lived here all my life.

Knew I had *something* all along, but not formally DX'd until 34, after the birth of my oldest child. Have tried many meds for the accompanying depression, just now starting Ritalin.

Very much looking forward to seeing what a "normal" brain is like :) I just started blogging about it, because I'm excited to see the change meds might make in my life.

Reading the book "Healing ADD" by Daniel Amen was a big catalyst for me in being a little more proactive in getting some relief from the ADD symptoms.

Happy to be here and hoping to interact! :)

I live in Northern California, Butte County to be exact... in a small town near Chico.
I am looking for a dr that really knows about meds and adult adhd.
I have insurance and have a dr that has dx me, saw a psychologist for a little for dx, but the dr that helps w/meds is a GP- doesn't really understand adhd. He has me tell him stuff about what I learn, what med dosage I think I should take but I want someone to teach me. It's too hard for me to know.
I am reading Attention Deficit Disorder In Adults by lynn Weiss and have the workbook that goes along with it.
Things are better, but know there's work ahead.

I am Sally, I live in Berkeley. I was diagnosed .....eesh...I think it was about 12 years ago.....my first thought? "well, THAT explains a lot !" I was lucky enough that my regular doctor, who knew that my funds were close to non-existant, offered to prescribe my usual meds for me ....I had just moved back to the bay area, and was having problems finding a psychiatrist.....so that was a life saver......

.................I am 59 ......sure wish I had know about it earlier in my life.....but I wasn't surprised to find out that I had a unusual brain .....
