So have anyone tried this "new" barr adderall? Is it the same product or not?
Yes, barr has acquired the production rights to the IR formula. Hopefully it is as effective as the original.
I believe that in the last month or so shire reached an agreement that XR generics wouldn't be allowed to enter the market until 2009. By this time shire hopes to have converted the majority of its XR customers over to the three new drugs which are currently ending thier 3rd phase of testing.
Actually, if i'm not mistaken, nrp104 was just approved by the FDA for sale. In the next 2-3 quarters shire will release two other ADHD medications intended to gradually replace the adderall IR, XR medications currently prescribed. The two other medications are spd465 and spd503.
My understanding is that nrp104 is a prodrug in which d-amphetamine is covalently bonded to l-lysine. It is not active in it's initial form and must be broken down by the stomach. It is thought that this form will reduce abuse of the medication because inhalation or injection would prove to be useless administration techniques. I'm not positive, but i believe that shire hopes to almost entirely replace adderall with this new form. Word has it they hope to instill this as their new flagship medication. If it does indeed have the exact same effects as current medication it could be very good news. With enough negotiations it could be scheduled down to a class III. This would negate all of the headaches of pre-authorization and such. At present, the DEA wants to keep it a schedule II, but there appears to be a significant effort to change that.
spd465 is simply a triple beaded system similar to adderall XR and IR. In essence it is a XR pill combined with a late release IR pill. This should give people who work long days the ability to take a single pill to control adhd symptoms for up to 16 hours.
spd503 is an extended release form of guanfacine. It is a nonstimulant. Guanfacine is currently used to control high blood pressure.
Hope this helps.

So i just picked up my prescription for adderall xr. will it be any different? or will it be the same? so im not quite getting this, a company called barr bought the rights to adderall which means what exactly?
read my post. due to patent rights, there will be no generic XR until 2009.
Barr actually will exclusively be producing a generic version of Adderall XR in a couple years prior to any other companies due to some kind of patent arrangement. Shire is in a big rush to rebuild their portfolio of ADD meds. The Daytrana patch was the first and the newer drugs (mentioned above) will be their future profit earners.
SPD465 was sent to the FDA in July 2006 for approval. Shire expects an answer by June/July 2007 according to what they told me by phone.

Yes I have read alot about NPR104... typical drug company BS. It's not any more effective (in fact with only one isomer it may be less effective) and introduces a new layer of complexity and possible problems.... Personaly I would stay away for at least a few years. I had not heard that the DEA was likely doing a back flip on it... that was going to be the one nice thing about it. But then this is par for the course for the US phama industry... got to make a buck (or a killing) I guess.
