View Full Version : The GRE
Dissonance 01-03-07, 11:16 PM Anyone take the GRE??
I bombed it the first time I took it so I've been reading some books about strategy on the test. The word pairs BOGGLE my mind. I could read those suckers a thousand different ways that make COMPLETE sense to me. HELP! All advice welcome!!
HappyTaxa 01-16-07, 08:31 PM I have been putting off taking the GRE, blah. I think you should be able to get extra time on it if you have ADHD.
livinginchaos 01-16-07, 11:09 PM are you talking about the analogies?
They are difficult; you really have to know your vocab for these. I found it easiest to look at the words and try to determine their relationship.
Figure out if the words are similar (synonym), opposite (antonym), same word - but different meanings (homonym) or inference that if two or more things agree with one another in some respects they will probably agree in others (analogy).
Here's an example of how to figure out the analogies:
(sorry, it's not the best example, but it works) (1) ABRASION : STROKE ::
I like to put them in a sentence to help me figure out the answer.
ABRASION is to STROKE as _______ is to ________ (and put the options in the blank spots to see if they make sense)
(a) boil : heat
(b) rubble : demolish
(c) flattery : compliment
(d) remnant : cut
(e) nut : shell
Find the relationship between the words given
In my line of thinking abrasion is a result of having rubbed the skin (or persistently stroking the skin causes an abrasion). So I want to find the answer where the first word is the result of the second word.
find the relationship between the choices and the given words:
- Heat can cause boils, so I think that that is probably the best answer, but I still need to check out the other answers.
- Rubble can be a result of demolish, however, I still think Heat : Boil is the best answer because it's more similar to the abrasion : stroke, having to do with medical stuff.
- Flattery and compliment . . .they are similar words, therefore not a good answer
- Remnant and cut . .. a remnant is leftover fabric after using up as much of the fabric as possible, but although remnant is a result of cutting fabric it's still not a strong enough pairing to be the correct answer.
- a nut is in a shell, however, a nut isn't the result of a shell, so it's not a good answer.
Check out this web site:

It looks pretty helpful.
I hope my explanation was ok and not too wordy. I have an easier time explaining things like these in a conversation versus writing.
The other thing you can do is Google GRE Analogy questions and you should be able to find some web sites with free sample Q's & Answers.
Good luck!!
ADizzyGirl 01-17-07, 12:22 AM I need to start preparing myself because I have to take the GRE sometime before the end of the semester. The ETS website has lots of free practice questions/study material.. haha I'm actually doing analogies right now just because I like them. After you select your answer, it'll give you the reasoning behind the correct answer, so I imagine that could be helpful.
Ahh.. just kidding, it only gives the correct answer. Still pretty helpful and very free.
f_wcomboadhd 01-17-07, 03:36 AM did you know that the GRE is going to be changing very soon? i used to work for the princeton review (quit last year) and from what i've learned its going to be a lot tougher than taking the CAT GRE now....another issue is that ETS will be holding the scores i think for the first rounds of tests for at least three months...so if you're heading into a deadline for apps you might consider making sure you can take the GRE before it changes in the fall this year.
its going to be far longer (four hrs), not going to be adaptive anymore, generally its going to be worse for test takers.
ADizzyGirl 01-17-07, 01:01 PM Wow, that sucks.. I'll definitely have to take it soon then, in case I need to retake it.
Dissonance 01-18-07, 03:10 PM I took it again. This time I borrowed study books from the library and they were very helpful. Both of the sections increased about 200 points a piece! I can't imagine that test being more difficult. The words are of the sort that no one uses in everyday language...
oh geez, i have to take it.
I am actually taking a free practice one on saturday...i dont even know what is on the exam...im taking having absolutely no idea what to expect, lol.
This could be BAD!
BananaSlip 02-16-07, 01:25 PM ABRASION is to STROKE as _______ is to ________ (and put the options in the blank spots to see if they make sense)
(a) boil : heat
(b) rubble : demolish
(c) flattery : compliment
(d) remnant : cut
(e) nut : shell
OK, this analogy is crazy. I didn't even think of "stroke" as a verb. I saw it as an "abrasion" is a mild medical situation, and a "stroke" is a critical medical situation. The relationship between the given word pair and the choices of word pairs below: insane! Unless "stroke" is a noun, as in "knocking the daylights out of someone" and a "stroke" may cause an "abrasion"....then, the answer would be "(a) boil : heat" because "heat" causes a "boil".
Wow, I don't know if that is the correct answer, but I really took some time and thinking to arrive at that answer.
I took the GRE, but don't know how I got through it. I remember that it really hurt my brain afterwards, and I had to sit in my car for a couple of minutes to wind down from the sheer anxiety induced from the test.
I would advise getting a computer simulation of the test and practice to just get used to format and the fact that it's not pencil and paper and that you can't go back to check your answers. I performed much better the second time around so I wouldn't worry about the first set of scores.
Good luck!
auntchris 02-16-07, 09:05 PM Okay what is the GRE?
BananaSlip 02-16-07, 09:22 PM GRE = Graduate Record Examinations = High Anxiety
Most graduate level programs require a certain score on the GRE to get accepted, kinda like the SATs to get into college.
auntchris 02-17-07, 04:17 PM who has to take this test? I dont understand why one has to take it?
you need it for some graduate schools...
Proscrire 02-19-07, 12:39 AM who has to take this test? I dont understand why one has to take it?The GRE is to test whether an applicant received the basic undergraduate education the applied-to school requires of beginning grad students.
Once more my brain proves it's goal to be useless in any practical area.
Once more my brain proves it's goal to be useless in any practical area.omg, totally.
I am applying to PT school. Please tell me why I need to have this amazing vocabulary to do so?????
After taking the practice GRE, i think i would seriously rather take the MCAT
