View Full Version : ADHD, Straterra & focus problem
AndreaPurple 01-08-07, 02:42 PM I just went off of Wellbutrin and Concerta a few days ago and now I am on Strattera. I'm taking 25mg a day right now, I will go up to 40mg next week.
I have been so sleepy after taking the Strattera, this is pretty common isn't it?
The first day I took it in the morning and I was napping a lot that day, doc told me if that happened then to take it at night, so that is what I am doing now. But I still seem to be a little sleepy.:faint:
I am just wondering if this will go away?
Unmedicated I am a very low energy person, I really don't need something that's going to make that worse.
EYEFORGOT 01-10-07, 02:42 PM Yes, sleepiness is one possible side effect. I can't tell if my straterra makes me sleepy or if it's my sleep apnea or just me being a person who crashes in the middle of the day.
Sometimes my husband's meds that he takes at night are being taken to late at night, so he ends up sleepy in the morning, dragging his feet. Instead he took it around dinner time. So that most of the sleepiness hits him at bedtime.
Hope that helps a bit.
AndreaPurple 01-10-07, 03:23 PM Thanks Chel! I think I will try taking it earlier in the evening and see if that helps.

AndreaPurple 01-24-07, 04:45 PM I've been taking Strattera for almost 3 weeks now. I started out at 25mg for a week and then went up to 40mg, that is where I am at right now.
I feel like it is helping some but I think it will be definitely be better with an increased dose.
It seems to me that I "sometimes" have some focus, it seems to come and go, is that possible? If so, do you think it's that the dose needs to be higher and that it will get better with an increase?
I'm still feeling kind of tired from it as well, anyone have any experience with the tiredness lasting this long and still going away? I am just worried that it's going to stay with me, the last thing I need is to be less energenic then I am already.
That makes me think to ask another question...anyone out there without hyperactivity on Strattera and had it increase your energy?
Ok, that's all my questions for now. Thanks for you time.
EYEFORGOT 01-24-07, 06:02 PM I'm on 60mg. I once was up at 80mg but my nausea was so bad I needed to lower it.
I just started taking my straterra at night. I think it's helped me not feel sleepy during the day, I'm more alert. I have had trouble sleeping due to my apnea, so that makes me feel that I physically need a rest...but I'm not "out of it" mentally.
I'm inattentive, so I can't help with the hyperactive question.

Thanks Chel,
I have been taking it at night because of the drowsiness but I forgot to take it last night, so I decided to try taking it this morning and see if it would still make me drowsy during the day and it did. So just wondered if I still might have any hope of that going away? If not, I can just keep taking it at night.
I am inattentive too, I was asking for input from those without hyperactivity if it gave you any energy?
sportbikechic 01-24-07, 07:51 PM Hi:) Just jumping in on your conversation regarding time of day. I have been on Strattera for almost a month now and I am up to 40mg 2x a day. My question is: when I wake in the morning I feel irritable and struggle to be calm dealing with my ADHD son getting him ready for school. I was wondering if I should start taking the entire dose at night, then when I wake I should be in a better "space".
What do you think?
Side effects: for me I have appetite suppression:D , and emotional ups and downs in the late afternoon.

Sometimes it's worth it just to stick to your regular (lower) dosage for a while. Although I get some effects within the first 2 weeks of taking it, it really does take me at least 6 weeks to feel like I can focus at will for prolongued periods of time. Unfortunately, that state goes away within 48 hours of stopping the medication. The focus from strattera is also way more subtle than the focus provided by a stimulant, IMHO....
couldyourepeat? 02-12-07, 05:11 PM I have been taking strattera for 8 months now, and am also a person with naturally low energy especially mid-day, and an inattentive type. Yes, I can say that it does give me more energy than I use to have, but the med seems to cycle with my hormones. For most of the month I won't need so much rest, but before my period starts, I'm napping on at least 2 or 3 days. Energy comes back sometime after I start. There have been several times that I thought the med wasn't working anymore, those usually coincided with my cycle. So if you notice a similar pattern happening, don't lose hope, the med can work. But maybe not every day??? ( I don't try to count on it anymore). At least from a girls standpoint, our cycles produce the same hormones and are mixing with our meds. It could stand to reason that we would be more tired during this time and feel more energetic later? Anyway, as a low energy person, especially WITH the med, I've gradully learned to cut myself some slack. Whatever your circumstances may be, I hope you do the same...;)
