View Full Version : Aggitated on Adderall XR anyone?
jnjgange 01-10-07, 02:02 AM Does anyone get aggitated more easily on Adderall XR? The med seems to be working well for me but I notice I seem to be more aggitated on it. Wondering if anyone else has the same experience?
Thanks,
Jan
Matt S. 01-10-07, 11:47 AM Adderall is a rotten drug. I was miserable on it.
steviefranchise 01-10-07, 01:33 PM I got very agitated on it this morning and I even had a good night sleep.
Usually it calms me to the point of feeling sedated.
I'm to the point of not knowing what to expect on any given day with Adderall...

What are you using now?
I have another doc appt. on Monday and may ask about switching to dex.
Yep. When I went from 20mgXR twice a day to 25mgXR twice a day I had about a 2 week period of bad agitation. Thankfully it went away.

You mean Madderall!! I hate it!! My husband refuses to try other meds and if he takes Adderall during the day he must have a few drinks to get through the grumpys. It is a vicious cycle!! Most days he doesn't take any meds. But there are days when he has to take the Adderall to focus at work and then he has to drink to ward off the effects of Adderall so we can live with him at home. I can predict the nights he drinks with 100% accuracy by if he has had Adderall or not. The other thing he does on Adderall days is play on-line poker for hours and hours.
Crazy~Feet 01-11-07, 01:12 AM I become agitated on any stimulant when I am not on a mood stabilizer, but I am bipolar :) Bipolar and ADHD tend to group together very frequently, ya know.
sherigraph 01-11-07, 01:19 AM Adderall XR has worked pretty well for my son. Other than when it needs to be adjusted.
Jay Jay 01-11-07, 12:28 PM Agitation on a stimulant can be a sign there is another underlying disorder - Bipolar has already been mentioned. I take 25mg Adderall XR twice a day, and it is pretty sedating. If the Adderall seems to work, then ADHD is probably a good diagnosis, but if it creates side effects like agitation, anxiety, or depression it may be time to do a little research, then talk to your doctor to see if something else is going on too. I'd really suspect Bipolar if side effects are only present some days, since Bipolar cycles. Keith
autumtoashes 01-11-07, 01:37 PM The only time I ever got agitated on on Adderall, both versions, was when I didn't eat, or have water. I asked my Dr. about it and he said that sometimes when you' dont have enough sugar, sodium, etc., that even with or without Adderall, you tend to get a little agitated and/or easily irritated. Another thing with me, is when I first started taking the pill, I would always take it with cranberry juice or the ruby red grapefruit...and it would FOREVER to kick it, and even when it did, it wasn't the full "thing"...since I've read on here and various websites that the cirtric acid or vitamin C absorb most of it.....
hope this helps :)
Matt S. 01-11-07, 01:46 PM well I cannot disrespect the drug itself Adderall has a couple versions of the tablets 20 mg and 30 mg (Barr and Shire) and they do well by me but Dexedrine is what I take and the 10 mg tabs from Dextrostat are what i get (another shire brand med) due to the lack of brand dexedrine tablets and the multiple dose aspect just teaches me how to use my time wisely and 80 mg of dexedrine works the best, the XR dream is a nightmare for me with the exception of ritalin LA and focalin XR and the former desoxyn gradumets from 1997 when i was a teenager the long acting medicines are disappointing versions of the short acting medication.
Is it possible to get aggitation from a stimulant and not have a co-existing disorder? Could the aggitation just be from an increase in norep/dopamine. Perhaps the dosage is to high?

The reason so many people mention comormids is because they seem to be so common. Very few ADDults diagnosed after childhood make it through without developing some kind of comorbid. There has also been tons of research on this (please don't make me dig it up now, as I am unmedicated for the duration until I see the psydoc again) ;)
I personally mentioned bipolar because I happen to have it myself. I cannot presume to guess at anyone's comorbid conditions without seeing more information than the OP has provided me with :)
co-occuring disorders does seem to be common.
mama_lei 01-12-07, 04:32 PM I notice that on Adderall XR, Im not as playful and upbeat as usual. I wouldnt say that Im irritable or rude, but I notice Im more serious at times and Im sure to my kids it comes off as if in a bad mood. It reminds of of people who get Botox and cant smile but they are not mad. Im not mad but I think my body language looks otherwise.
When I take ritalin I am more serious so to speak. Life is full of trade-offs I quess.
