If there is one thing about my adhd that I like it's the highperfocus. If only I could turn it on and off at will I would be a Nobel prize winner or millionnaire businessman by now!

So, do you any of you who are receiving treatment, find that your hyperfocus is reduced? If so does this have a negative affect on you or is any negativity outweighed by all the good that treatment brings?

Therein lies the crux...even off meds we cannot turn hyperfocus on or off :)

See... I think that on meds I have a little more control. If I have other priorities I can pull myself back from getting sucked into something that I find interesting, but unimportant. At the same time if I have no other priorities I can still let myself go and hyperfocus on whatever it is I'm fascinated with at the moment...

I could really focus and learn a lot quickly, but it was harder than ever to shift to do less interesting things. Daniel Amen (Healing ADD) discusses what he calls overfocused (I think he's discussing the same thing as hyperfocus) ADDers and says a serotonin enhancer can help reduce too much getting stuck on one topic. I found this to be true, but also learned (the hard way of course! ) that taking more than one med more than doubles your risk of unpleasant side effects:eek: .

In any case, I wouldn't worry about losing your ability to hyperfocus. If you do of course, you can always quit the meds -- that's why it's called a "trial of medication". If it doesn't improve your overall picture, chose another route.

Take care,
