Hi all--I'm new, thought I'd just let you know that I'm in Nashville. I've lived here for about 5 1/2 years, and my husband is Middle Tennessee born and bred. I moved here after completing grad school in NY--previously I lived in Alabama (grew up and attended college there).

Oh yeah--we're neighbors. I'm in West Meade, near Charlotte--so probably not more than 5 minutes from you. It's nice to know there is someone close by!

Hi, I'm Liz in Knoxville - I just moved from Texas.. I've got ADHD-Inattentive, Bipolar II and dyslexia. I'm doing pretty good right now. Despite all these issues - I'm functional. Various forms of therapy help. My husband is recovering from PTSD - so now he's able to relate to my nutty feelings.

Hi liz, glad to have you

10-06-04, 03:26 PM
I'm living in Knoxville and still trying to find competent medical help that isn't tied to a pharmaceutical company. I don't want to be prescribed straterra because they have funded the clinic. My GP doesn't seem to "believe" in ADD. Anyone have any ideas?

if you dont like your doctor just go to a new one, um... try some add site, some of them have doctor directories, that might help, just dont settle with one if you are not happy, its your right as a patient to approve of what your dr is doing, just keep looking, i know thats not much help, sorry

I live in Nolensville and work in Franklin, just south of Nashville. Can anyone give me the name(s) of any doctors in the Nashville area who treat ADHD? (or anywhere else in TN, for that matter)
Specifically, I've been on anti-depressents for about 14 years w/excellent results, but since being DX'd as ADHD about 3 years ago I've been wanting to try stimulant meds to see if they can help.

10-18-04, 08:48 PM

I now go to a nurse practitioner who specializes in psychiatriatric medicine. I've been diagnosed with other things before, but she is the first one to pick up on the ADD. I like her style - she listens and is willing to try new things, and is always researching and learning.

Her name is Mary Griffis-Parrish, RN. I am attaching a direct link to her bio at the practice I visit, but I understand she works at one or two other offices (don't exactly know where).

I've been on antidepressants for about 5 years now (atypical depression), and yet my memory and concentration continued to decline. Only recently tried stimulants with great success.

I wish the same for you!

Know I am a little late...

We live in Columbia, TN

And I am Mom to a ten year old ADD boy, and an 11 year old girl.

03-07-05, 09:13 PM
Welcome, tnbsmommy!

Late? No such thing in the ADD world! :) Glad to have you here. This forum has helped me quite a bit, especially since there are limited resources in Middle TN. It is weird - there are really so many people with ADD here, but like so many other ideas (professions, etc.), we often take a while to catch on.

I'm a late 30-something with a recent diagnosis (wish I was as fortunate as your son) and would be glad to support you over the forum as I can. I know other moms who aren't on the forum, also with ADD kids, and remember how my ADHD brother was.
(My poor mom - who is also recently diagnosed at the age of 61!)

So, again, welcome!

03-08-05, 04:53 PM
Welcome to the forums, tnbsmommy. Hope you find the information and sopport you are looking for if I can help feel free to lets me know by privite message.

03-08-05, 05:01 PM
Thank you so much, Katherine and Tammy! I appreciate the welcomes and the support!

I am really glad to have found a place that can help me gain a better understanding of what my son is going through, and how his thought process works... and also to be sure I am doing anything and everything I can to do the best thing for him and help him cope..

05-07-05, 06:20 PM
I live in Millington, Tennessee, right outside Memphis.*waves to the neighbors here* :)

05-16-05, 02:39 PM
Tamarama.............both my parents went to APSU and so did both of my dads parents.
I lived in Nashville 5 years. I lived near Dalewood was so long ago and I was so young then I don't remember the name of that area but i know we took E Trinity Ln to get there. LOL

Well I moved to Hawaii in March but I won't be here much longer. At the end of the year I am moving back to Tennessee for a year. They will be sending my husband back to Iraq for a year (he's been for a year already when the war had just started). I would just stay out here but I am pregnant with my first child and feel if he won't be around then I need to be near family. So, I am moving in with my parents til he gets back. As much as I miss home I wish this wasn't why I am going back home. The part that sucks the most is that he will miss our childs birth. They think they will be leaving in Sept. or Oct and I am not due til November.

06-04-05, 02:25 PM
I'm from Chattanooga, way down in the south :p I'm relatively new to this site and to ADD (was finally diagnosed much later in my life than usual) It's nice to meet you all.

I'm in Nashville, but originally from Memphis.

12-20-05, 04:54 PM
I just tried to post, guess I lost it. Anyway, did a Nashville group ever get organized? I'm in southern middle Tenn. and they just figured out I'm add. That explains my actions, some of them, over the years. I'm taking adderal xr and it seems to make a big difference, though I'm still trying to get the dose right. My doc wants me to take more, I 'm trying for less. My blood pressure is up and I haven't had that problem before. But I am only 90 days off of opiates for 1st time in 6 years, understand addiction is a different subject, but my doc says 60% of his patients are add/addhd. Thought that was interesting. That could be an issue with BP, still in light withdrawl(PASW) . I am glad to be on two feet, on adderal xr and to have found this board. rehaber

Forgive me, I guess both post went through. Forgot to mention I am retarded too. rehaber

Hi, all! I'm Liz.

Sevier County, TN - currently. I was born in Chicago. Lived in Idaho my first 11 years, southwestern Virginia the next 11. I have also lived in SC and NC.

My mother has labeled me as unstable and unable to live with anyone. But that's just her opinion.
I have been diagnosed ADD-Inattentive Type, though I disagree with the "deficit" and "disorder" parts (just because my brain works differently.) I'm also prone to be obsessive/compulsive sometimes and I have anxiety issues.

My 15 year old son: ADHD diagnosis. currently untreated :(

My 14 year old stepson: ADD-Inattentive Type Diagnosis. also currently untreated :(

My husband: lots of physical ailments (which I personally think most of which are being manifested due to endealt with mental and emotional issues.) Oh yeah, and he doesn't really believe ADD is "real." He thinks that if they (our two older boys, and me probably, too) just try harder...

Our 4 year old daughter: shows many characteristics of ADHD (no diagnosis.)

Our 3 year old son: may be the only normal one in the whole bunch!

Too Much Information? What the heck? It doesn't look like this thread gets enough action anyway. :)

We don't have a post lengrh limit any way - so post away! :)

Hello all. I'm new here. I'm in Cadiz, KY. My 8 year old son was diagnosed with ADHD last year. His school nurse loaned me a great book called "Power Parenting for Children with ADD/ADHD: A Practical Parent's Guide for Managing Difficult Behaviours" by Grad L. Flick, Ph.D. I just ordered a used one on Amazon for $4.00 including shipping.

Born in North Alabama in the same town as Helen Keller. Lived in Tennessee most of my life after the age of 12. Brief stint in Texas. Currently live in Nashville will probably be in Smyrna again for a little while before hopefully getting back with my wife in Franklin. Right now I am kind of feeling around in the dark but hope to be getting with a good ADHD specialist soon.

Hi! I live in Nashville, but was born in Bowling Green, Kentucky. I've struggled with ADD since about 3rd grade. I wasn't diagnosed until after college, so I spent quite a few years feeling lazy, forgetful, and lost. Luckily, I did eventually find a great psychiatrist and the right medications.

03-23-14, 05:27 PM
Hello everyone.
If I'm wrong, please correct me, but I believe this thread can be found by a search engine and/or non-members, so prefer not to share my name in a post on here. However, if you message me I would love to tell you!

I live in Smithville, Tn. Approximately an hour to an hour and a half east of Nashville. Sorta close to Carthage and about 40 minutes from Cookeville.

I don't know if anybody even uses this subforum anymore, since I notice the most recent post is circa 2014, but I moved to Memphis TN from Australia about a year ago.

I was doing pretty well with my treatment in Australia, but am really struggling to access decent mental health care over here, or get anyone to take my ADHD seriously. The psychiatrist I was referred to (nurse practitioner) wants to take me off my meds that were helping and treat me for bipolar disorder (even though the meds for that don't help). I've been trying to find a psychologist and a doctor who actually specializes in ADHD, but so far that has just meant wading through a list of outdated contact details and practitioners who aren't accepting new clients.

Sorry, that got a bit ranty, but I'm kind of struggling here.
