Hello, I am new to the forum. I'm an adult who was diagnosed with adhd about 6 years ago.

I have been taking adderall xr30 twice per day and it has really helped me. I have been going to a private psychiatrist for medicine, and he charges $90 per visit. I get a 2 months RX from him, and my insurance copay is $50 for 2 months. So that is about $70 cost for one month of 2 pills per day.

My financial situation is difficult right now, so I was looking online to see if I could get it cheaper. I read some of the posts, and I read about costco, but still I would have to have a prescription, which brings me back to the $90 for a 10 minute "med check" with the psych.

Thank you for any suggestions!!

Look for a general practitioner/family doctor who is willing to continue prescribing for you. My doctor writes my monthly prescriptions for free. He just has me visit every 6 months for a quick check-up.

I don't know of any online pharmacies that could legally prescribe a Schedule II drug like Adderall.

I dont know of any places, but if you did happen to find one, you really dont know the quality of the adderall you're getting.

Sometimes poor quality pills make it into U.S. pharmacies, but its a lot more likely when ordering over the Internet. You gotta figure that since they're bipassing some laws anyways, they arent going to have the same quality restrictions in place. It'd be worth a shot though if you found a place.

Thanks both of you for your info. Yeah, it makes me nervous to think about getting something tainted or somehow inferior online - it is a risk ... that is why I wanted to get a reliable recommendation first, if possible, from experienced ADHD people.

I did ask my primary care doctor to write the script - she could have consulted with the psych and all, but she said she did not know enough about it to feel comfortable doing it. But she could refer me to the HMO psych and it might be be cheaper in the end ...

Have you discussed the money issue with your psychiatrist? Many of them understand financial problems and are willing to work with you on them. Especially if you've been stable on this dose for a while, he may be willing to reduce the frequency of your visits, or do every other check-in by phone, or something like that. If you could move your med check appointments to once every three months, even that would help.

He probably won't want to lose you as a patient entirely, so see if he can work with you to lessen the financial strain.

My son goes to a pediatrician, although he is now 18, he is still treating him because he is still in high school. We didnt' start out with him, but my doctor didn't want to put him on any stimulant. She did the Strattera, but that didn't work. The pediatrician just see's my son when needed. I go in each month to pick up the perscription, since it is a narcotic, they can't call it in or give me more than a month at a time. We have pretty good prescription insurance, so we just pay $15 per month for it.

No way are you going to find many people other then a specialist to prescribe a schedule II med. There's too much scruitiny on Dr.'s to write that stuff unless its their specialty - i.e. phychiatry or pain management.

An online pharmacy that sells adderall doesn't exist. A few will pretend to sell it, but at best the will send you something phony in its place. They will also try to charge you upwards of $5 each pill.

Scheduled meds from online pharmacies are pretty "iffy" and I would stay away. Like Diane said, many Dr.'s are good about sliding scales, reducing fees, etc. if possible. My little sister has the same problem with concerta - she can't afford the co-pays or Dr. fees. So she goes without. I guess our American medical system isn't all its cracked up to be. Good luck.

Generics are your friend. If you have not insurance to cover your meds brand will KILL you. Methylphenidate is dirt cheap and generic adderall can be very cheap if you look around (I get mine at costco, $26 a month). Extended releases are expensive, concider 2 or 3 doses of fast acting meds. And yes do talk to your doctor. One other thing you can do (depending on dose) is buy larger tabs and split them. Some people save alot of money this way but the script needs to be writen as such. You have many options to explore.
