ADD, i.e., Amen's "Type 3"? His book talks about Effexor, but the book is six or so years old. I'm curious is there's a newer, accepted drug approach. Thanks.

Well most doctors don't subscribe to Dr Amen's theories of AD/HD. A typical doctor would probably be treating you for AD/HD and Anxiety issues.

Funny, my dr told me to buy the book the day he diagnosed me. I did and wow, it was like someone wrote a book about me. :p

Yeah, I was looking at his book last night. I asked my wife if any of the symptoms on the over-focused checklist sounded like me. She said they all did.

Overfocused ADD is probably ADD with some OCDish traits. I was reading the other day that 30 percent of ADDers also have OCD and according to my psychologist many ADDers have obsessive traits (he says they share the same brain pathway through the basal ganglia). Anyway serotonin generally helps OCD type issues. I was on Concerta and my doctor added a low dose of Prozac to that and the obsessiveness really went away, unfortunately the combination of meds created tics and other problem, so I didn't stay on it long.

I was also reading that many successful ADDers are successful in part because of their ability to hyperfocus and when very interested the hyperfocus can actually trump the inattentiveness and help them stay on task. This can be good for school or work (assuming it's in a area of high interest), but is frequently hard on relationships.
