I was wondering what would happen if someone without ADD took it. I am just now starting Adderal Xr and someone asked if they could have one. I said NO. But now I'm curious.

Most likely though, nothing will happen. They'll feel sped up and talk a lot... if they're an addictive personality, perhaps they'll seek the medication. If not, then they may not think about it again until somebody has it again for 'em. BlessedLady 01-20-07, 07:05 PM I was wondering what would happen if someone without ADD took it. I am just now starting Adderal Xr and someone asked if they could have one. I said NO. But now I'm curious. Adderall XR is a Schedule II & giving it to anyone other than the one it is Prescribed for is Illegal. The person could have Cardiac problems & not be aware of them because they have not been diagnoised yet. Also certain other meds when combined with those like Adderall XR can cause Major medical problems or even death/ That also can include certain OTC meds. Continue to say " No" BlessedLady Matt S. 01-22-07, 11:01 AM In my past, as a child I made the mistake of giving out ritalin in High School and do not do it... those people will not leave you alone unless you do not do it to begin with. Had my own phone line then in 1996 and it was like a suicide hotline checking my voicemail. Hyperion 01-22-07, 05:19 PM Adderall is a pharmaceutical amphetamine medication. In non-ADHD persons, amphetamine is known as "speed." In some persons they can be highly addictive. Ritalin is an odder situation...its pharmacodynamics are more similar to cocaine (dopamine reuptake inhibition), but its pharmacokinetics (absorbtion, how long it lasts, etc) are more similar to amphetamines. Like many drugs that affect dopamine, these medications can be addictive in some people. In ADHD persons, they don't tend to be addictive (taking them every day is not a sign of addiction...an addict would probably go through my entire month's prescription in a few days). It is not surprising that others might want your medications. Leaving aside the fact that giving them to others is illegal, it's also just a bad idea in general. First off, if you are prescribed it and are ADHD, then you probably need to be taking those doses, and also as mentioned because of possible health issues for others, but also because you don't want people constantly asking you for doses. Look, when someone with ADHD takes Adderall, they generally find a dose that works for them and continue to take that steady dosage for a long time. People without ADHD who find these drugs addictive do not take them in that fashion. Substance abuse and addiction tends to involve steadily (and rapidly) escalating dosages, and a desire to take ever higher doses, even to the point that it causes obvious physical harm. While it is true that most of us have the reaction of "oh, thank g_d that I can actually stay organized when I take this," this is not nearly the same as the reaction in those who find it addicting. I find it irritating if I have to drive to a different pharmacy if my normal pharmacy doesn't have any in stock, while addicts have been known to do any number of degrading acts (which cannot be discussed in a family forum, but you can imagine) to feed their habit. It is a completely different set of behavioral responses. |
