You would get all day coverage with 2 IR pills. Besides for patent and marketing reasons the XR capsule was designed to combine 2 IR doses for simplicity. Plus most people forget taking their 2nd IR dose on time so it makes it easier for the patient to be compliant with medication and thus improve their symptoms and go on with their lives.

I got the feeling that the release was more tappered.

The release is a little more tapered. The first dose is slowed slightly by the time it takes for the gelcap to dissolve. The second dose is going to be release a little more slowly as the coating on it dissolves, it's not going to happen all at once.

I personally find that XR pills are absorbed a bit slower for me, and I personally prefer this, as I find that it results in fewer side effects for me, but obviously everyone is different. I also take Adderall at night to help me sleep, and for that an XR is perfect because it gives a full 8-9 hour coverage so that I don't have to take another dose at 3am (and yes, I do wake up pretty much right when it wears off).
