has anyone experience chest pains while taking an ADHD med and have they gone away after a while of taking the meds?

NB. where are you in Markham? I am in Willowdale.

I have had chest pains from methyphenidate before, and I can not stress how important it is that you discuss this with your Dr immediately if not sooner.

It may turn out o be something associated to your medication, or it may turn out to be associated with somethinng much more serious. You should never delay in telling your Dr about anything like this.

I'm sure you were probably planning on telling your Dr about this, however if you have not done so yet, then I would not hesitate to contact him ASAP if I were you.

Call your doctor immediately!

It is possible that it is something benign or unrelated...for instance, indigestion and some respiratory infections can cause benign chest pain (I once panicked when I started having sharp pains in my chest back when I was first taking Adderall, but it was just a really bad case of indigestion due to college campus food).

On the other hand, most ADHD medications have a stimulant effect, and could potentially cause serious problems in persons with certain cardiovascular abnormalities. It is possible that these chest pains could be a sign of a serious cardiovascular problem. I think it is more likely to be something benign, but you should have it checked out immediately just to make sure.

It seems crazy that they would pass off chest pain like that. Did they tell you what it was? Is Concerta a stimulant?

wow, so im pretty sure its heart burn

i get it after i eat, and tums makes it go awayFYI, Tums active ingredient is calcium bicarbonate which has been shown to potentiate many stimulant drugs including amphetamine, and mehylphenidate to name a couple.

I used to suffer heartburn from time to time, but it was not a side effect of my medicine per se. I think it had a lot more to do with me eating a high carbohydrate diet.

Anyhoot, I found that OTC Zantac (the OTC generics of Zantac are great BTW), and also Tagamet to be very effective at doing excactly what they were described to do, and that would be to block acid that causes heatburn. These drugs can provide you much relief, without the potential of potentiating any of the stimulants.

All that being said, Tagemet (cimetidine HCL) has a number of drug interaction to be warry of. For instance, when taking a benzodiazapine like Valium or Xanax for instance, cimetadine will potetiate drugs like that in a similar way that the bicarbonates potentiate amphetamine. Cimetidine also has a number of other drug interactions that anyone who takes it should look up to be sure that they are not experiencing anything inadvertently. Food for thought. ;)

This isn't something to fool around with. Stimulants powerfully affect the cardiovascular system.

Chest pain puts someone on #1 triage in the ER. it's a serious matter.

When your ADHD Doctor did your EKG (as they are supposed to for first time Stimulant prescriptions), how was yours?

Or did your Doctor even give you a lab test order for a baseline EKG ?!

Stimulants can bring out hidden Cardiac Arrhythmias, eh?

You have to be very careful when taking medications like these. If you are getting that side effect then tell your docotr. The doctor is the only one who can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking your ad/hd med of choice. As with any medication there are side effects and these side effects must be balanced with the clinical need. I know I sound like the PDR but this is useful and helpful information, at least to me it was good to know. Best of luck and keep us updated.

Andy.

Adam, since you're on Concerta I would keep a close eye on your diastolic BP. If you don't know, that's the second number of your BP reading.
Concerta can cause your BP to go up--especially during exercise. Once I started Concerta my BP went up, diastolic especially, and when I exercise it spikes really high.

Just play it safe for a while and keep checking your BP...especially after running.

no she did not do an EKG, i will ask about that

as for blood pressure, when my chest was hurting i ran to shoppers and checked my pressure like 3 or 4 times

checked when i got there twice, walked around the store and then checked again, my readings were all normal, except the first one when i ran into the store it was a bit high, 2 min later after walking around it dropped back to normal.

as for the chest pain it really only comes up after i eat, but yes i am playing close attention.

i got another appt on thurs, can they do an EKG in the office?
