View Full Version : Adderall - Losing Effectiveness After 5 Days?!

Long story short...realized I was ADD for some time now. Took awhile to work up the courage to go to a neurologist but I did last week (Wednesday, January 17th).

Confirmed what I already knew. I have ADD.

Ok. She gave me a prescription for 20 mg Adderall XR.

Took the first one this past Saturday. Felt pretty damn good. Energized, happy, felt focused...the whole nine yards. Didn't and don't like the effect on my libido but I'm not sure if it's just my imagination (reading too many threads on it) or it will go away.

But today I didn't take it until 10:00 and this was after I had a medium sized breakfast (a peanut butter and jelly sandwich..I was on the run!).

Well the Adderall really hasn't kicked in AT ALL like it has in the last few days. I'm kind of freaking out like maybe it's not going to work. I see the neurologist for a followup this coming Tuesday and I'm afraid she's going to up it to 30 mg.

Is this normal? Am I overreacting? Could it be the meal I had? On other days, I've taken it before breakfast on an empty stomach.

Well, there are several possibilities...I'll start with the most likely first.

1.) You are more likely adjusting to the effects. I remember my first coupla days on Adderall. Who hoo! I just felt positively giddy! then, after a few days, I didn't feel the 'giddiness', and essentially felt like...well heck...that was short lived? How is this supposed to work again? The overall effect, once you are used to it, isn't as pronounced as it is initially. Why? I'm sure someone else has a more 'scientific' explaination than I can provide. I am willing to guess that your brain is realizing it can use this new chemical for 'good', rat and not simply a 'perk.'

2.) You didn't say what you had with your PB & J, but I know any kind of citrus juice/food is a 'no no'. It's apparently nullifies the effects.

3.) Perhaps the time of day you took it, if it was different. I find that, when I take mine first thing in the morning, I certainly seem to get way better results than if I take my first pill later in the day. Not sure if it's just my natural biorythms, all in my head, or if there is a legitimate reason.

I would say at this point, there isn't any cause for great concern. The early part of DX/meds feels like, and is, a very 'experimental' phase, and meds affect everyone differently. Plus,.. as you and your Dr. work together to find the right dosage for you, you will notice similar short-term 'Yippee' days where you feel 'overly fabulous,' as your med doses are slightly increased.

Thanks for the reply. I did feel something but it's not as pronounced as the first few days were. And I didn't have any orange juice with it. THAT I did yesterday...it didn't kill the effect but it wore off in the mid afternoon.

I'm not sold on the Adderall thing. I like the focus but it's killing my libido. I'm no super stud but I never had problems there before and this bugs me.

20 mg isn't too much of a dose either, I started on 40 mg per day.

If 20 mg kills my libido, I can't imagine going any higher. This has me stuck. I like the feeling but I just don't know if I want to give "that" away.....
