Why?????????????????????
?????????????????????????
?????????????????????????

That's sick. But really- why? How? I read the article all the way through (applauds self) but I don't recall reading exactly why this is being created/invented/prepared/researched aside from speculation as to it's political and warfare benefits. Isn't that kind of weapon illegal, or against some kind of international code? Maybe I'm being naive.

Frankly I don't want to believe it- but somehow I can. Is this top secret, and leaked? If this is true, how is this not headline news (or am I missing something?)?

This is still sinking in. The very thought is making me nauseus.

wow...I"m still trying to process it all.

Just a stray thought... but isn't there kind of soft of maybe quite possibly some kind of a teensy weensy little issue over WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION right now?

What the hell are these idiots thinking? I personally think (still not sunken in yet) that these kinds of inventions are crimes against humanity... it's not like they mean well in any way whatsoever. Just my opinion. But the very thought of such a weapon existing makes me want to build my own spaceship and shuttle myself to a distant solar system.

Sorry, that came rather close to a rant!

this is an old idea...

we are living during the time of figuring out how to make it happen.

The next thing will be to use it once, and then try to control its use... perhaps like nukes ... so far, never again...

I don't think our goverment would do that for the simple fact that that would devestate it's own army if they were in range. The military is the most ethnically and demographically (except for age and a few other details) group of people I have observed. If it had enough range to reach the point from which it was delivered it would be devestating

Nothing would shock me about our government.

I'm a little on the cynical side as well.. history makes interesting reading but it leaves me watching the cycles repeat themselves.
Cheers! Ian.

I think the only defense is figuring out an effective way to store genotypes...

??? If you don't mind, can you explain?

Nothing surprises me either; I am both cynical and very paranoid. But I'm still trying not to believe it- that's just too much. The implications of such a thing existing are too much for me right now- because it wouldn't be unless someone intended to use it. When, where, how, WHY?

Hey, I am one of those people that had a walking darwin fish on my car and a "I love my country but I question my goverment" stickers on my car. I'm inside now, and not brainwashed in the least, if anything I've met more reformist in here than I ever encoutered out there (too many people don't even know who the heck thier senator is!!!). I still think this bomb is purely theoreticall and not a threat in the least. I have a vantage point many (including other goverment workers) don't. I would not worry about this.

Thanks! I hope you are right, and the article is total bs.

I was not aiming my comments specifically at you, I was merely typing my thoughts; I did not think you are brainwashed. I know several people in the military, and they are as you describe, and also similar to me and my humble but wary views. Sorry, I should have mentioned that.

Gee whiz muttle, stay out of the news section!!

I agree that their are no weapons like this yet, ready to deploy, in all likely hood.

But there are clear indications of the technology required to "do the deed."

The first is our ability to change the "flu" vaccine in direct response to a changing flu threat. The idea is more important than the process... we change the target and grow the new stuff for delivery, and it is genetically different every year.

The next step will be a genetic engineering feat like fighting a distributed genetic disease like Cystic Fibrosis. Genetic therapy will consist of hybridizing a cold virus, or other pervasive viral threat, and a code splicing technology that will seek out the bad code in every living cell, cut out the bad part and stitch in the new. we will applaud this technology, as we should, but it will be everything but the last details of the "bomb" itself.

We already are growing plants that are deliberately sterile, by screwing up their DNA... if it jumps species to us or worse perhaps, plankton or algae, we'll have a real problem on our hands. At this point making sterile crops prevents the customers from holding back "seed corn" instead of buying ALL of it from the seed manufacturer. The up side is that it may be dangerous to have engineered crops breeding with wild or even other engineered crops... sterility may protect not only profits, but life on the planet itself.

The end, however, is the capability to do exactly what is discussed, and it will come, and within our life times... the exact year is not important or possible to determine yet.

Too much relief and relaxation I think might be unwise. Dealing with the hypothetical without undo pressure may allow for wier consideration than we feel we can entertain when the facts catch up to the "dream" more closely.

IMHO.
