I think all the approved medications work for most people, but not necessarily all people. For some people certain drugs work better than others, and for some the drugs do not work at all. Many report that some of the antidepressants help counter their symptoms just fine, while others report that antidepressants combined with an approved drug for treating this dissorder works best for them. The important thing I need to point out is how differently we each respond to these drugs. We are fortunate to live in an era where we have as many treatment options as we do, so if the first treatment that you and your Dr decide upon does not work out as you hoped it might, there are several other options that just might work. QueensU_girl 01-28-07, 07:20 PM Lars is correct. Some docs will prescribe the stimulating anti-depressants for ADHD. Inattentives tend to be discovered later in life, if at all, b/c they tend to not have the observable problematic behaviours of the Hyperactive and Combined/Impulsive folks. eg Such as hyperactivity (talking too fast/toomuch) or the impulsivity (blurting out answers/interrupting, impatient in lineups/driving, 'spendaholic'/impulse buying). So the symptoms that one would want to have controlled are more like the 'poor working memory' ("where are my keys?"), UNDERACHIEVEMENT (for IQ), and/or planning/problem-solving/prioritizing/organizational problems. ---------------------------- N.B. worth mentioning... Some ADHDers also have (unknown to us) nighttime sleep disorders which can make us seem like we are ADHD/ADD. e.g. inattentive/dozy/cognitively dull/irritable in the daytime. 'Excessive Daytime Sleepiness' from SDs typically occurs in the afternoons... I mention sleep disorders b/c they can mimic ADD/ADHD. CERTAIN sleep disorders are becoming more common as North Americans gain weight; meds don't help this kind of alertness disorder so much! HTH |
