View Full Version : Jumping around while reading!!
yolanda 02-02-07, 07:15 PM Despite my best efforts to read better, I am still having problems reading
and jumping around all over the page, it's as if I wish the story would get to the
point in a hurry, instead of me reading the entire thing and trying to analyze
what has been said.
Well, I am diagnosed with both ADHD and dyslexia, and I'm not sure if my
reading issues are related moreso to dyslexia, or to ADHD.

This jumping around that I do all over a page, instead of starting from the beginning and going in order is really frustrating to me. Even if it's something minor to read and it really wouldn't kill for me to start at the beginning then go from sentence to sentence until the end. I still have this strong urge to start from the beginning, read 1 sentence, and that just want to skip down to the middle of the page without going to the 2nd sentence.:)
The reason why I mentioned earlier about not knowing if jumping around on a page or somewhere else in the book is attribututed moreso to ADHD or dyslexia, because if I know which disorder is really impacting that, then I will be more intuned with treating one more than the other. Who knows, it could be a combination of the both.
This is important for me to get a grip on, because I've graduted from college already, and I know that I will want to return one day to get a second or even 3rd degree. And I don't want my reading issues to be a major hurdle for me, I know that they will still be an issue, but not to a point that impacts my grades or chances of completing the semester, or anything like that.;)

I used to have that same problem. A high school teacher had me start reading with an index card, going line by line, down the page. It drove me aboslutely crazy to do it, but after a while, I got to where I was moving it down every 3 lines, then 6, etc. Now, when I have to (hehehe, not for "light" reading where every word does not count!), I can read every line without the impulse to jump.
Hope this helps!

oddjobace 02-02-07, 10:51 PM I hate when that happens. I have whole shelves with books that are half read because I got frustrated at reading them maybe because of the style or lost interest in the book.
Since I started on my Adderall XR, it's been a lot better for me.

agirlandherdogs 02-03-07, 07:10 PM Reading to me is looking at a picture book. However, my medical texts are just that TEXT. This was the first thing I noticed after going back on treatment after 10 years of not using medication. Reading, reading slow, and actually noticing it.
However, when I feel distracted, I get out some larger size sticky post-its. I cover up text that i'm not reading and only focus on that particular paragraph. After each section, I write a few words to trigger what I just read. I keep that for when I pick up the book to continue. I read the triggers and then go back and touch on anything that didn't sound familiar or I paused with....
good luck, reading is horrible!
Michiko74 02-04-07, 03:25 PM I just look at the titles, subtitles.. anything in bold, italics.. then I read the first sentence of each paragraph and then read the summary.
Oh and I like to highlight stuff too. Colours are always a good thing with ADDers.
Yolanda, don't worry if you find yourself jumping all over the place. I believe you just add more stress to yourself if there's some idea you have to read stuff start to beginning. If you find you can't focus and concentrate long enough to make heads or tails out of the page, that might need some medical intervention.
Otherwise.. scan.. and get a really bright highlighter.
netsavy006 02-06-07, 01:11 PM I jump around while I'm reading. Both with my body and with the book. I will skip pages in the book and I will move myself around when I am reading. If I try to read str8t though I get bored so jumping around actually helps me finish my classwork readings. That could be part of the Aspie'ness too but I don't know for sure...
xstarchildx 02-06-07, 04:24 PM I do the same, i start to read and if it doesn't grab me straight away i jump all over the place, it get's very frustrating, what's worse when you read the whole page think to yourself well done for reading the whole page, then realise "What the H*** was that all about.
Grade A 02-06-07, 04:30 PM I feel your pain here...it took me 3 months to read Driven to Distraction....coincidence...I think not.... LMAO

I've had Driven to Distraction for about 6 months now and I still haven't read it all! I like to skip around all the sections instead of reading the book from front to back.
Grade A 02-06-07, 04:47 PM Yep thats why it took me so long lol...(scratching head)*(flipping through pages - why did it say that?) oh I have to go back and find out ....and so on...you get the point I think lol
netsavy006 02-07-07, 11:38 AM I did that with the book too. I skipped around through that book to. some of the sections just didn't interest me and some sections I had to read over and over again...
The index is my favorite part of a book. I fully agree with whoever said that the publisher of a non-fiction work without an index should be shot.
I also have many many unfinished book laying around. Many of them are great and to my taste. It's not that I found them disagreable in any way. I just get pulled to something else, generally either my thoughts or the internet.
Matt S. 02-08-07, 07:55 AM I'm an index person myself, books without indexes for me is cliff's notes
auntchris 02-10-07, 09:34 PM I understand how you feel. I also jump to the next sentence. I use my finger as I read each word or use a book marker or index card. it helps some... have you talked to someone about it. Ask you teacher too.
I have this problem too. Can anyone pinpoint the cause? Is it hyperactivity?
I've noticed meds don't help with it much, at least not yet
i feel like i just get tired or unfocused after like..... a page. Around all of the words is like, a blurr and then it can all fog up and i'm like crap, where was I? or I just close the book. but a lot of this is me being bored so quickly, though more like my attention span.
