I have been to an initial visit to see a psychologist and have had one follow-up appointment where I took some kind of computer test where they flashed different letters on the screen and I had to push the "x" key every time I saw "X" and the spacebar for every other letter. Can someone tell me what that test was for?

Also, how long does it generally take before they prescribe you medications? I really feel like meds will help me a great deal, but so far I've barely been able to actually talk to the psychologist...they have me taking more tests and it's not like I get to sit down and spill my feelings or anything. (Yay Navy care.) If anyone can give me more info on either of these things I'd appreciate it.

Hi momma_nelli. I love your username. A psychologist can assess you for ADHD, but they cannot prescribe meds.. I would assume the psychologist will finish testing you and then refer you to someone who can prescribe meds.

That test (one of the CPT, or Continuous Performance Tests) is to check for inattention (not hitting the key) and impulsivity (hitting the key when you shouldn't/jumping the gun).

I assume you will have more tests, though. Inattention and impulsivity can indicate other things as well as ADHD.
