My sons 5mg dex tabs had been sitting on the shelf for while. We had stopped giving it to him because he wasnt able to sleep till late at night. I recently expressed my concern , to my family doctor, that maybe my son got the ADD from me. I have an appt with a pschyatrist next month.

It was my day off and I thought, what the heck, I may as well see if the Dex has any affect. I took one 5mg tab at 11:00 AM. Initially in the first 5-10 minutes I felt a slight head rush. After that it was smooth sailing. I was wide awake and alert all morning..got a lot of errands done. In the afternoon I normally get fatigued, start yawning and many times will feel very sleepy while driving. It is sometimes so hard to shake this tiredness that I have to pull over to the side and take a 5 minute nap before I move on. I took another 5mg tab at 4:00 PM. Driving for over an hour in rush hour traffic I was completely alert and did not yawn once! What a feeling! It is now almost 11:00 PM and I am still alert and havent yawned all day! I felt energized all day, got a lot of errands done that I normally would have put off. I really like the feeling of alertness and energy...something I havent experienced in how long?

I will take it again tomorrow and see how it helps me to be productive during the work hours. I didnt experience any noticeable side effects. It sort has the same feeling as having a couple of cups of coffee.

Has anyone asked their family doctor to presribe this medication without formally being diagnosed with ADD? I would prefer having Dex than have to drink several cups of coffee during the day. What do you think?

What do you think?I think that almost every adult on the planet would experience benefit from taking Dexedrine as a performance enhancing drug. However, there are rules at this forum concerning illegal use of these prescription drugs, and as a moderator at this site I am required to point those rules out.

I suggest that if you felt that you really benefited from the Dexedrine, that perhaps you should tell your Dr about your experience in as much detail as you have shared with us here. If your Dr concludes that you have ADD, and that Dexedrine is the right choice for you, then I look forward to hearing how you enjoy it, and how it might be helping you then.

Until then, it is against the policy of this forum to talk about any illegal use of these prescription drugs. I'm sorry to be the one to have to point out the rules, as I am not the type of person who likes to tell other people what they can, and can not do. However, I am required as a moderator to point all this out to you.

Please see your Dr soon, as I look forward to hearing whether or not this might be a viable treatment option for you based on your Dr's approval.

It's ok we all make mistakes. lars is right. Definately speak to your doctor about your success with it and see if he agrees that you have ADD and that Dexadrine is the right drug for you...

agargrules are rules :-)
but there is also the fact that at least 50% of adults who think they have ADHD after their kids are diagnosed actually try their kids medication..
I KNOW it's not the right or legal thing to do..but is is not uncommon...

a LOT of docs ask parents when they see them if they have tried their kids medications..

If you tell your doc, I am sure he will understand, but please don't keep doing it

I understand this idea fully. When my cousin was taking 5mg tablets of adderall I was wanting to take one of them and see how it worked. Then they changed it from 5- 5mg tablets to 1- 25mg. Then I realized there were possible interactions between adderall and zoloft, so I'm glad to not have done that...

I'd say that sort of curiosity and 'testing' is likely high. My own big problem with the scenario is that in some cases, parents will take a kids meds, and the kid goes without.

I am not sure if you are male or female, but I just wanted to say that you should be wary of any "easy to get into" Psychiatrists you see about "ADHD", esp. if you are female. The majority (esp. older ones) tend to not believe in Adult ADHD, and especially in females.

Just wanted to warn you so you don't get a broken heart/take it personally.

Here's why:

Women are usually missed and labelled as "depression" or "anxiety" (which mysteriously never gets better). Duh.

Hard to "get better" when the Primary problem (ADHD) is not treated, right?

Many Adult ADHDers (esp women) have gone for years with "Treatment- Resistant Depression/Anxiety" diagnosed -- b/c their ADHD was missed and not treated.

Why does ADHD look like Depression? Not treating ADHD leads to life chaos and 'underachievement' which leads to depression and anxiety (secondary).

Most ADHD Psychiatrists have long (years?) waiting lists and often the worst psychiatrists (true of all doctors) are the only ones chronically taking patients.

(B/c they are ineffective -- and their patients have DUMPED them.)

I think the OD's and illegal use is geared more toward the one's who'd come one the site and gloat about snorting it. I was rediagnosed once I stopped arguing with my doctor about how I had grown out of it.
