The FDA approved in Dec 2006 for the use of Risperdal for Autism. This is good news for asperger's people and parents of kids with the dx. Now there is an official medication to look into when treating kids with aspergers. This medication is an atypical anti-psychotic used to treat mainly bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. The usual dosage for people with schizophrenia and bipolar is 2 - 3mg at the start, but I believe that us aspies can get away with as little as 0.25 - 0.5mg as a starting dose. One thing is that people with asperger's disorder respond to medications very strangely. They my respond more significantly than 'normal' people. I read in several books at the library that with asperger's, what may be normal doses for other conditions may be way too much for aspeger's people. It's very likly that a so called "normal" dose, an aspie may be hypersensitive too. So the best thing to do is start/request/enforce that the lowest possible dose be started first. Never start an aspie on a dose higher than the lowest possible unless there is a clinical need for a higher dose. This may set them up for further problems. So with the case of risperdal, start at .25mg and titrate up as neccessary. Best of luck to everyone and be careful out in this med world...
