How does everyone get their meds?

I have to call my doctor every month to have her write me a new prescription. She insists on seeing me at least every 6 months or else, no mas. Even once every six months seems like a waste to me (she would like to have me come to her office every month but i'm like 'no way'). I've been taking meds for 3 years now. I've tried a handful of medications and found that 10 mg of adderall twice daily is the most beneficial.

The government has strict regulations on a few of the ADD/ADHD medications out there right now, including adderall, and for pretty good reasons which I won't get into now. But, is there any way to get the restricted meds (i.e. not Strattera or anything like it) legally with a single prescription for unlimited refills? Does anyone out there get 60 or 90-day prescriptions? Those are the largest prescriptions I've ever heard of being written.

I've had my doctor write me 5-6 months of refills on my Strattera.

I see my Nurse Practitoner monthly for my Ritalin. I have 15 minute med appointments. She metioned to me that some insurance companies are allowing for 60 day prescriptions of Stimulants for children but not sure it also applies to adults.

I think that a MD should see a patient more than every six months when he or she prescribes stimulants. There are side effects that the MD should be checking for no matter how long the patient has been on the stimulant. The medical community does not know the long term effects of stimulant use in adults.

I would have to agree with Tara. Even with my Strattera prescription, I still check in with my doctor by phone.

I have been to my shrink monthly, but I haven't settled on one med yet. I've been 3x in 3 months. I suppose when you find something that works bi monthly might be fine, but once ever 6 months seems actually too long inbetween visits. I wouldn't push for longer than that. You need to see the doc to make sure your body isn't responding negatively, and circumstances do change. Adderall is an amphetamine. Caution isn't such a bad thing.

Drs, especially in the U.S. are scrutinized for over-perscribing controlled drugs - painkillers, simulants, etc.
I have heard of Drs who specialize in chronic pain being hassled for the amount of pain pills they give, so I would not be surprised if a Dr was cautious giving scrips for Adderall. In fact, a Dr would be a fool for giving "unlimited refills" for an stimulant, even if he could - way to much risk involved.

i see the real point trying to be made here though. something should be done to mitigate the costs of having to go see your doctor to discuss the same problems over and over again. there are many times when i feel that this only exacerbates my condition. more federal health aid-what presidential candidate supports that forum-lets start a new thread on that.
