View Full Version : Heart palpitations anyone?
jnjgange 02-16-07, 02:30 AM Hi,
Does anyone have heart palpitations? They started in my early 20s and I was told it was normal for women to have these. I'm now 30 and they seem to have gotten worse after my two children. I had a physical and told my doc and they said some woman have them during certain times of the month. I don't have any pain or numbness with these. My doc did not seem too concerned. They seemed to get better after taking Stertera. Anyone else have these?

mochakk 02-17-07, 02:54 PM Hi Janell,
Since I started taking Concerta, I've noticed some palpitations myself - not enough to feel overly concerned though. Just out of the blue, even when I'm sitting at my desk, I'll feel my heart speed up. I think that is one of the side effects of this drug - but it sounds like you had palpitations before starting meds (?). If you're really concerned, I guess you could request an ECG (or is that EEG?). I had to go get one the first time I was put on meds - which were antidepressants...

Proscrire 02-17-07, 03:15 PM ECG- Electro Cardio-graph (gram?)
EEG- Electro Enchephelo-graph (gram?)-This is for your brain.
Just a tidbit from my vast collections of barely-useful knowledge.
FrazzleDazzle 02-17-07, 03:50 PM Heart palps can be very scary! I am not on any medication, but a couple of years ago I had a terrible bout of them. They did get worse around Aunt Flo's visits, and when it was hot. I tried atenolol which made them worse, despite the docs ok to titrate up. I did some research, and read that chronic dehydration can be a cause of heart palps. So, I really upped my water intake, and that is the one main thing that has helped. Now, I only get them occasionally, when I get a tad dehydrated, so I really watch it.
VisualImagery 02-17-07, 06:54 PM I have them because I have Mitral Valve Prolapse. Today they seem very bad since upping to 40mg Strattera. The pain won't stop. Even considering the ER-at my age could be heart attack. Giving myself 30 more minutes to decide what to do. This is not a panic attack either. The heart rate and palpitations started, got high and won't go down.
Worried.

Another widely used abbreviation for ECG is the ever-famous EKG (suffix is gram btw).
Back on topic...I get palipatations (sp?) occasionally myself (29 y/o male), but they seem to have lessened quite a bit since starting strattera. Every once and a while it can be a little scary cuz for a half a second it feels like my heart is going to jump out of my chest. Doc said not to worry about it unless it gets worse since I have no other symptoms of heart disease and am still pretty young.
EDIT: I didnt notice till after posting that i was in a women's section of the forum. Please accept my most humble apologies.

Might want to make sure you're getting enough Magnesium (and sometimes Calcium). Doctors are terrible at catching this one. I have always had a minor magnesium deficiency and had brought the symptoms to doctors, but in the end I had to figure it out myself.
Heart palpitations are one of the symptoms when my magnesium gets low. And by the way, all of you who said it gets worse around your period, your magnesium levels tend to drop around that time too. It used to give me migraines at the exact same time every month. In times of stress it would get up to migraines, heart palpitations, eyelid twitches and tingling in my fingers. Magnesium supps keep all these symptoms away.
Multivitamins aren't high in magnesium, so I take 500mg a day. Supposedly calcium deficiency can do a lot of the same things (except the migraines), so I take 500mg of calcium too, on top of the multivitamin. (They say the ideal is 2:1 calcium:magnesium ratio-- I take extra magnesium because I KNOW that's what I need to keep the migraines away). Mineral supps are cheap, so it's a good thing to try.
VisualImagery 02-19-07, 01:06 AM If you google magnesium and mitral valve prolaps or palpitations you get a google of links. The same with anxiety, migraine, fibromyalgia, and panic attacks. Seems there is a link among these and magnesium. Other vitamins/minerals to consider are C, B vitamins, zinc, selenium, to name a few.
I take extra calcium because of my age and risk factors for osteoporosis. After this recent episode with my MVP, I am reassessing my supplementation levels-Caution with fat soluble vitamins D, E, and A-they can be toxic at too high a level.

VisualImagery 02-19-07, 01:33 AM Luv ya dorm, thanks for the advice. Finger crossed that doctors will be in tomorrow.
Don't know what they can do, I cannot take beta blockers-they lower my blood pressure to fainting levels-even very tiny doses. 80/50 for example.

scary! are you doing ok now??
VisualImagery 02-19-07, 03:13 AM Better enough, but calling the docs tomorrow AM. probably need an EKG and another Echocardiogram-last one was in '85. This has been bad, but should clear up. Then I should have another 22 years before the next flare up!
ME, thanks for caring!
poe171717 02-21-07, 03:56 AM VI,
how did everything turn out w/the doctors?
VisualImagery 02-21-07, 10:18 AM All problems disappeared before I could get in touch-out of office on holiday Monday. Say my original pdoc-I am back on all the meds that work and a bit more xanax. My heart rate is fine and no more chest pain. I will probably see my internist before too long and discuss these issues. An EKG before going to Australia probably is not a bad idea.
I should have reports in soon that will clear me to go back to work-fingers crossed! Thank dog for xanax-otherwise I will be fine!

kilted_scotsman 02-21-07, 03:58 PM Hi Folks
Heart palpitations and irregular heartbeat were one of the symptoms that set me off down the research route that led to me finding out about adult ADD.
I've had them on and off for years but they got alot worse recently. Doctors don't take them seriously up here....probably because of our deep fried diet of Mars bars and pizza
Kilted
poe171717 02-22-07, 02:38 AM same here kilted....living in the south U.S. where food isn't considered cooked unless it's deep fried :p....fried chicken, fried okra, fried green tomatoes (which are actually really good), fried mushrooms.....you name it, we fry it :D.
