View Full Version : So What Is It About?
ADDAussie71 03-11-07, 04:55 AM I am wondering if this is a problem for anyone else?
Do you struggle to explain the plot of a movie or book to people when they ask "So what is it about?"
This is a problem I've had since my school years (long before I was diagnosed with Inattentive ADD), when my teachers would comment on how well I read, but then would further add "Does not seem to comprehend." So for example, when we were ask to read a book and then to write an essay, the reading part would be fine, but the writing part would be a struggle because I just couldn't process the information that I had read.
Is this a common problem with people who have ADD? Or would it have more to do with LD? I have been diagnosed with both.

I struggle too..so I watch *G* movies LOL..that way I am better at concentrating and not getting confused..I can ramble about "Drop dead fred, or Elf, or Anne of Green Gables" etc, and not look stupid :p
how sad is that  :faint: :p
TabbyKat 03-11-07, 11:02 AM Heehee. I was watching "Detroit Rock City" the other night and DH asked me what it was about. I just stared blankly at him for a minute. I have watched said movie several times, and should know it well by now, but all I could do was tell him what the description on the preview paragraph was...I drew a complete blank! I do that with MANY books and movies.
jacinta 03-11-07, 12:46 PM Hey, it means you can watch movies and read books more than once and see/read the bits you missed the first time..I have watched Mrs doubtfire about 5 times and each time I see something i missed the other times because I was paying attention to other things as well.
amythyst 03-11-07, 02:04 PM I tend to either oversimplify, or go into waay too much detail when explaining shows I've seen. It's either "it's about this guy..." or "first he went there, then got that, and did this, then this other person came in, but it was really taaht person and oh, I forgot, before that he...." and so on. Not much in between with me.
See, I can watch the Godfather (1-3), or other movies with a lot of characters in them, and stay right with the movie.
My wife cannot.
I keep telling her she has ADD, but she won't listen.
She has a lot of traits mentioned here on the forum.
I can't watch a movie with her like the ones mentioned above, because I lose track, when I get questions throughout the whole thing.
"Why did he just get killed?" "Why are those men after her?"
She had trouble following Talledega Nights when we watched it.
That's really a plotless movie with Will Ferrel jokes throughout, and it was in HD.
Maybe the ADD helps me to focus on a lot at one time, because my mind runs so fast.
But I hate "action/adventure" movies.
Go figure...
ADDAussie71 03-12-07, 02:03 AM The save the frustration, I usually just give them the book or DVD (if I have it on me) and say "Just read the back cover."
I don't know if this is ADD related or not, but I am also one those people who when watching a movie, and I see someone on screen who looks familiar, but can't remember where from, I have to look them up on the IMDb. Otherwise, I cannot continue watching the movie, because the whole "where have I seen that person?" is a complete distraction.

I give up LOL:D
I used to read Stephen King books years ago.
I am a scanner.
So I get most of the story, but find myself wondering what happened to such and such, when I turn back and find out he/she got killed.
Well I thought they had just gone on a vacation and weren't being mentioned, never knowing till I turned back, it was a permanent one! :D
I have a management book I'm going to start reading today.
I should be able to read it at work because it applies to my career, but I can't. :p
So I'm going to read it on my lunch hour, using a "tea bell" as a timer for me.
I have to really focus in 15-20 minute blocks, to make sure I read everything and don't scan.
Otherwise I get halfway through and find out I have nothing from the book.
