I was diagnosed with ADD about 4 years ago as an adult. I discovered I had this my entire life but no one was able to diagnose it. It wasn't until a professor of mine recognized the symptoms and suggested it to me. Along with the ADD I was also diagnosed with a reading comprehension problem. Takes me longer to read. HAve difficulty comprehending things I read. I was wondering if this goes along with ADD or if I'm a 'lucky' one to possess both? Does anyone else have these two problems??

ADD can have a big impact on reading. It does for me. Both in the amount I can read without losing focus and becoming fatigued and the short term memory of what I have read.

But the medication has significantly improved both the quality and quantity of my reading experience. Are you taking medication? If you are not or what you are taking is not working, it may be a good idea to jot down some notes after a reading session about the experience. If you then have a change in medication or dosing you can compare to see if there is some improvement.

Good Luck,

SteveM

P.S. Hope this note was not too long :)

Hello again, Countetta

Yes I think it goes along with ADD, IMHO....and I will explain why it is to me, and why I don't think it is always necessarily a "learning disability"

For me...If I am off meds...and I have to read something I don't want to, or like...( a how to book, or research...something for work they want me to read, because They think it's important.
I can't get past the first 10 pages without reading same lines over and over again....
It takes me soooo long to read it....I don't comprehend it because I get frustrated ,rush through it...don't remember half of it....because it's sooo boring or long...I don't care anymore. And because it's so boring and long I am then distracted by ...umm the flouresant bulbs above me humming, the conversation the cubicles away ,the TV, the radio
Or even better...I am off on a bunny trail in my head that started from a single line in the book. For example; There was a 3 page memo sent out for all management to read at work on How to cut the cost of printing paper from unessary reports..(here I go...ADD in full bloom)
Insert here...bunny trail..in my head ...
Hmm I wonder how many pieces of paper we use, man how many trees is that, I wonder what kind of trees this copy paper was made from...Trees I can't wait until Spring when the trees have leaves on them again, and it's all green, I wonder if we are getting an early spring..I am so sick of winter
Ok do you get my point here....This is why it's hard to me to "comprehend" reading..SOMETHING BORING.....

Now the reason why I don't necessarily think everyone who struggles with ADD, and struggles with this, has a learning disability, is because....
If I pick up a book I have been dying to read. I can absorb myself in that book for hours and hours..forget to eat..go to the bathroom, hear my kids talking , yelling , fighting ...a tornado or anything else. I see everything in my head going on in that book like I am right there, ....and I remember it for a long time..Some of my favorite books I read years ago I can tell you about..

So if I have a "reading comprehension problem, which they also gave me poor marks in too, why can I do that?

Now that is pure ADD to me.

Just an example...and my personal experience!
I don't want to say that you don't. Or others don't.
It's just that they said that to me in school, , like they have my kids.

And as for my kids,
I know why my middle son is like that..he can't sit long enough to read, eat or watch a movie over 30minutes before moving.......

My youngest loves to read..like me..and if he likes the book *he is reading at a 6-7th grade level" and is 8, he can read for an hour.....but he scores low in reading comprehension on the "big" tests in school...why because HE IS BORED...with the stupid short story they want him to comprehend.

Make sense, or did I lose you at the second line >For Me..LOL (poke poke)....:D

I have alway had reading problems along with comprehension problems. I was a young 5 th grader when I was diagnosed and that was in the 60's. I would like to be re diagnosed because I think I have dyslexia along with the reading prob.

I got reading comprehension too.
In fact, I'm a "scanner."
I scan posts, books, INSTRUCTIONS, etc.
If I get confused, I got back and actually read it.
Usually I pick up on whatever I've read, for the most part. :D
BTW, I've had ADD since I was a kid too Chris.
I can read a book if I want to, if it interests me.
But I usually just scan.
It's a hassle some days, especially when I want to learn the subject.
As for instructions....I've just never been able to read them.

I don't have an issue with reading, but listening.. :P Just recently, I went through an educational assessment and it turns out that I am literally missing chunks of information. So the reason why I may be screwing up on assignments, is quite literally, I am not getting all the information down. This is an issue seperate to my ADD btw.

So yeah, I got two for the price of one :P Problems that is!

Dyslexia is a type of learning disability but not all learning disabilities are dyslexia. I have sever dyslexia but I have higher than average comprehension abilities just don't ask me to spell any thing I comprehend without at least one spell checker unless you are able to read dyslexic.

Which by the way many of us can do. . . we are able to read each others unedited writings because many of us are not dependent upon letter order as we read in word patterns.

Apparently some do have comprehension difficulties. . . . I had a hard time learning to read however once I caught on I made up for lost time in months not years.

Below describes dyslexia as I experience it

http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art39053.asp

Dyslexia used to be known as “word blindness.” I am very fond of this definition as dyslexics have trouble decoding individual words. They often do much better reading words in context. I once had a very dyslexic student tell me, “There is no way to tell the difference between the words hop and hope if they are by themselves. You know which one is which based on the rest of the sentence.” This example illustrates that dyslexia is a decoding problem, not a comprehension problem. Dyslexics will often do significantly better on an oral comprehension test, than on a reading comprehension test. ***End Quote

A rather interesting title for a dyslexic. . . ..

I also can not see angles I must feel them nor can I pronounce a word based upon the way it is spelled. I can comprehend without the need to be able to pronounce correctly.. . . .

Fascinating description of dyslexia. Reading and writing come very natural to me, writing especially, so coming here - too often! - is right up my alley. I'm so in awe of you who carry on despite dyslexia, writing on this board, despite the fact that it's not your first and best choice for communication; you're helping so many people and I'm proud to know you.

I would love to experience this for just one day. . . .just to see how I like it- :p

Writing is every where no matter what one does for a living. . . . .I have tried soo hard to escape paper work . . . . .to no avail so I simply carry a spell checker {and make frequent use of abbreviations when I can}.

Wow what a sweat thing to say I really needed some encouraging words right about now - well timed

All of those who have problems writting need some kindness. . . . . . thank you.

The way I process information is delayed. So my ability to comprehend things takes longer, including reading, or so they say ( i have learning differences). It's not like I know what it's like to comprehend things as fast as others in the first place...And I honestly cannot tell how much of it is under the influence of ADD, but it surely doesn't help...
