hi, im taking 10mg prozac daily, and also ritalin 5mg, up to three daily. ive noticed im eating a little more since adding the prozac, and have nausea. the reason i think thr doc added prozac was because i wasnt taking the ritalin as much as i was supposed to, and i started getting depressed. i seen in one of my books, ritalin and dexadrene are also used to treat depression. i was wondering if i didnt want to take the prozac, if the side effects get worse, like the insomnia lately has been bad. if i take ritalin three times a day, wouldnt that work the same like taking the prozac? isnt there any dangers from taking prozac, and my ritalin three times a day? right now ive been only taking it once a day, because it seems like id be way too nervous to take it all! also, im overweight, and was finally loosing a few pounds taking the ritalin, will prozac make me gain any weight? i know i would be much happier if i could loose weight, thats part of my depression problem, any advice?

Disclaimer: This is not medical advice, the information in this post is from personal experience and information anyone can find about depression and SSRI's on the internet.
Are you seeing a psychiatrist or a general practioner? Are you an adult or teen?
Prozac can cause weight gain, as can all the SSRI antidepressants.P Ritalin can cause weight loss. But using either for this reason is not a good idea. Your doctor probably put you on Prozac for depression-a potentially terminal/fatal illness if not treated. Please do not quit the Prozac.
If weight is a reason for your depression, you need to see a counselor, start an exercise program-walking is a great way to start, and learn how to portion your food and eat healthy-making simple changes to your diet to reduce calorie intake such as skim, not whole milk, one soda a week for a treat-not everyday or several times a day. Stuff like that. A dietician could be a great help designing an eating plan that would fit your lifestyle.
If you are an adult, is the 5mg ritalin 3x day, enough? It had no significant effect for me. I was seeing a GP then a Psychiatrist and the pdoc said that GP's often do not prescribe high enough doses for full therapeutic effect. I always recommend people with ADD see a psychiatrist if at all possible. The optimal dose is different with everyone.
For example, I take 72mg Concerta in the am, and then have 3-10mg doses of ritalin that I can space out through the day according to my schedule and need to focus/concentrate on my work. This is what I need, other people have different levels that work for them. This does not mean you should take these meds in this amount!
I have ADD and also have depression and am on medication. I found that the SSRI's caused weight gain. Some SSRI's do this more than others. When I started Ritalin and a job where I was on my feet all day, I lost a lot of weight. This is why I suggest you start walking! Weight loss and gain can also be symptoms of depression.
Please treat your depression and yes, I did some reading and stimulants are sometimes prescribed for treatment resistant depression. So if you have ADD and Depression, the meds could actually work together to help you. Sleep disturbances are very common in depression, your doctor can also prescribe something to help you sleep-this is a huge need for people with depression and makes a difference in recovery.
NOTE: It takes 4-6 weeks for SSRI's to take full effect, so take care of yourself during this time. Call your doc if things get worse. Do not go off your medication, do not skip a dose, take it at the same time every day too. You will see gradual improvement and also have some bad days during this time.
Best to you-get better!
