I am currenlty doing a diploma in sport and recreation and believe it or not I am in my second year, I managed to pass my first year only just though with last minute stressful assignments and last minute night before study for exams. I managed to fail physiology though last year which I have to resit that this year but am able to still do all my other second year papers. However right now I am really feeling the pressure with studying as I have a coaching peer evaluation due in tomorrow morning:eek: which I am suppose to be finishing right now but keep wanting to surf the net  I have a physical activity and health poster and report due the following week and an event plan a week after that. I am so feeling the pressure and I keep tellin myself ok I will put aside this time to work on them but when that day comes I I just cant seem to do it, I have so many other things in my mind that I want to do and cant settle down to do my work. It is driving me insane and I am starting to fear that I wont pass all the papers this year. Does anyone have any ideas of what I can do to stop any distractions and how I can actually sit down and study. I find the only thing that makes me do the assignments is if it is handed in the next day. I need help I want to be a personal trainer and want to be one as soon as possible and get out there and work, I dont want to fail.
Roxy.

I agree, student life is not easy, especially for ADDers. I know how overwhelming it is. For the first few years of my degree (it's taking me a long time) I had a terrible time getting homework started and finished.
I've worked very hard this semster though, putting so many hours into my schoolwork. And it's paying off, I just got a midterm back that was 40% higher than the first one (that I wrote before I was diagnosed). The only thing that really helps me is to remind myself of my goals, and also remind myself how good it feels to succeed and how disappointed I am with myself if I didn't do even close to my best and finished poorly. I just have to get started. And once I'm started I remember how much I enjoy what I'm learning about and I just keep going. Of course, I've had alot of help with this from my meds too.
Sounds like you really want to complete the program, so just do you best, .. Maybe make some to do lists.. (you could even break up papers into smaller chunks... intro, main body, conclusion... or 1st draft, edited, final etc.), then prioritize the tasks and figure out when they need to be completed by. Write down what materials or resources you need to complete those tasks. Check them off as you get them. Then as you complete the tasks check them off. You could have everything you needed to do outlined on this list.. so you can see keep track of what's left to do and how much time you have. It may look overwhelming at first, but think about how good you'll feel as the list starts to fill up with check-marks. I dunno if this will help.. but just trying to strum up some ideas to get you motivated.
I hope you get through the program successfully! Good luck!
I wish I had some great advice for you. But I tried to finish my degree twice and flopped both times. Did great with any of my major units which I liked. But option or core units I didn't like were a struggle. I failed one unit 3 times after getting half way through each time with B marks. Just didn't do the final assignment and missed the final exam each time.
Focas and concentration was my biggest problem. And I wish you all the best as I have no clear advice to help you. You could try something as simple as twirling a pen through your fingers while you're reading. Maybe doing something with your hands will help keep your head where it's 'spose to be.

Roxy,
I've been there. Know it stinks. Do you have access to treatment? If the barrier is brain chemistry that can be fixed, it's crazy to struggle needlessly. If I had known then (in college) what I know now, I probably would have saved myself from tons of distress. Hate to see you walk down the same pathway when you don't have to.
Good Luck,
SteveM
My daughter did well with setting a timer; determine to focus for twenty minutes, set the timer and work until it dings. Then play, and do other things... okay, maybe twenty is too much at first. But you get the idea. Something to mark thetime for you so you don't lose it.
I had to time myself all my life.
From the kindergarten all the way to my Bachelors.
In fact, I took several years to get an associates!
As piglet said, timing your studies is a good idea.
I would pick a time to study, when nothing good is on tv, or whatever distracts you.
Then when a program comes on, you watch it.
I usually picked 30 minutes of tv, after 20 minutes of study, note taking from books, etc.
Try it out, it will either work or not.
But you don't know till you try.

I'm full time student myself and have found since my undergrad (I'm working on PhD in ADHD/LD strategy instruction BTW) I have to have music to study. What I do is choose a CD that doesn't distract me and I work until it's over and then take a break for 10-15 minutes. Then I put the same CD on and do it again. I've gotten so used to it that I can't listen to that CD any other time I associate it with studying so much. Be sure that you're up front with your professors about your learning issues so they don't think you're flaking on them. As a prof myself I can say that if a student comes to me with concerns about their ability to complete and assignment ahead of time I'm much more forgiving than if they show up the day it's due and say they couldn't get it done. Also, make use of the disability support services office on campus. They may be able to help too. Hope this helps a bit!

Thanks everyone. I have just handed in a huge assignment this morning and I was up most of the night doing it last night as yes I did leave it to the last minute. But managed to get it all done and handed in and now tonight I can relax and I am absolutely shattered, I need some sleep.
