View Full Version : How to tone down the Adderall high when going in public?

Hello all, I tend to be an on and off user of Adderall, thus taking many vacations between medicating. (I just cant stand the side effects of long term use, but the drug helps me immensely) As a result I tend to get euphorically high when taking my first few doses, and if not careful, I can talk peoples ears off. I do keep it steadfast in my mind to keep my trap shut...(that it's the drug talking), but I sometimes still let loose. Is there anything over the counter that will tone down the adderall high without negating the benefit of the drug? Would a drinksof alcohol might help? Other suggestion?

Don't take so much Adderall.

How much do you normally talk?

I mean does it change the amount you talk a little or a lot?

I talk more when I am not taking Adderall.

When un-medicated the only thing that shuts me up when I get on a roll is duct tape. . . . . luckily I can be a fun type of chatty Kathy. I have a decent disposition although a bit sarcasm from time to time in deserving situations.

Besides as long as you are allowing the other person to speak why do you feel the need to shut up? Maybe you have a lot to say.

Sorry, I should have revealed my dosage. I do well with a 15mg XR once daily. My doctor wanted me to take twice daily, but I don't like the side effects. Also, I should have given more detail about when I get "euphoric mouth". I get sort of sharp/dry witted. I think I am being funny, but in reality I tend to anger some people. After I come off the high, I remember how I was and I'm a little embarrassed about it. I just tell everyone that I'm trying out a new diet herbal suppliment, and that it sort of gets me goofy. Then many ask me what suppliment am I taking and where can they buy it. Grief!

I used to be the exact same way when I took long drug holidays... which some of my holidays were up to two weeks at a time. Then, when I went straight back into taking my prescribed dose (30mg Adderall XR per day), I'd REALLY feel the effects for the first couple of days. The tolerance built up quickly and after a while, I wouldn't "feel" it as much as I did. (hope that makes sense)

Right now, for example, I've been working like crazy for stuff that's due at school so I've been taking it daily (and sometimes a little more with the help of an IR booster).

I'm actually hoping that once this work I've got to do for school is done, I can get back to the way you are right now, which is really "feeling" the effects of Adderall, so I plan to go on a long drug holiday.

Being talkative isn't too big of a deal really, unless it's really bothering you in your life. When I'm "feeling" the Adderall like you are, I also tend to be a little more outgoing, but I also tend to concentrate a lot better, too (which is a very good thing!).

Tolerance sucks! Enjoy the feeling you have with the Adderall. If it's too bothersome for you, maybe speak with your doctor about lowering your dose. I don't think alcohol or adding some other drug is the answer here... especially not without first talking to your doc.

Good luck. :)

Well I also take long holidays (usually about a week) at a time, and I definitely do feel the dose much more for the first 2 days or so following. Like yourself, I get more talkative, but Im also much more ambitious and positive, so I really can't complain. For me, its like the way *my* personality used to be before becoming depressed and such for the past 5 years or so... :( So I thank Adderall for helping in that field...

But to answer your question, the only supplement that might tone down your talking or energetic "high" would be L-Theanine. You can find it at Vitamine Shoppe type stores. Itys an anxiety reducer and supposed to calm you. Try it out. Maybe it will help you.

I agree, Try a lower dose. Problem solved. Is the adderall making you manic?

Thank you all for your answers. I've had no problems with Adderall making me frantic. When I take it for a long time (more than a week at a time) I become very flat, but not frantic. I thought 15mg XR was a fairly low dose, but I will consider next time trying 10mg or 5mg xr. My doctor prescribes me 60 capsules a month, and I barely take more than 12, so I am well stocked up on 15mg. I will try the L-theanine and see if it helps.

I am like meadd823, when I don't take my meds I can talk a squirrel to death. On the meds I am tollerable. When I go off the meds for an extended period of time and go back to my regular dose, I am somewhat introverted until I get use to the meds again. I say somewhat, really the only way to stop my mouth is with duct tape.

So, maybe when you go off for an extended period of time, re-start at a smaller dose and work back up. That is sometimes what I do.

just an fyi--if you do take a break do NOT start at your usual dose. i am prescribed 30mg xr 2x daily and took a month off. yesterday i took my normal dose for the first time in a long time and im still up now at 6am and this is going to ruin my whole week..

I agree, Try a lower dose. Problem solved. Is the adderall making you manic?I believe NZ meant MANIC as in possible bipolar disorder :) hypomania/mania being a very euphoric and elated state of being, and often the manic person has what we call pressured speech...which is an inability to stop talking.

I also agree with the "take less Adderall" group.

i can't offer any advice with the issues you have because I am the opposite, my speech is always classified as "Pressured" and Stimulant medication seems to be what stops it. Adjustment to the change, however I have issues with being quiet and what seems to other people as 'passive'

Also with how pretty Adderall looks when flushed down a toilet ;).

It varies for me. I connect with people more when im unmedicated but follow the conservation better medicated. I think it would help you to just be more conscious of the amount of time that you are talking to a particular person.

My husband had that issue when he was taking Adderall. He could talk more and faster than anybody else I know! Completely out of character for him.

He then switched to Concerta for other reasons... and the fast talking with first doses went away.

Perhaps Adderall isn't exactly the right medicine for you? Worth discussing with your doc, anyway.

Ive noticed when some people take adderall (including myself) most sentences start with the phrase "this one time!" I found that a lot of people get chatty with adderall, and then quite during the come down. Just breath! Or try very hard to just focus on what the other people are saying, like switch the direction of where you are putting the extra energy. If you drink some adderall you'll be the life of the party. But seriously, there is something to that (but i do not recommend it!) I had an x boyfriend who took adderall and would have to drink a few beers in order to calm him down...but he is weird. So no fixing adderall with alcohol is just going to start you on a very depressing lifestyle. Do you take it all the time? Maybe just take it when you have something that needs your concentration, work or whatnot.
