View Full Version : Thread killer stats?
Wheel1975 01-07-04, 12:39 PM Are there statistics on how often particular people post near or at the end of a thread...
could we potentially identify folks who are thread killers?
:)
You can scan down the list of posted messages in a forum to see who the last person that posted was, however, this would also include people who answered questions asked, or thanked people for answering questions asked.
Now why would you want this info? Curiosity? Or is there a sinister plan forming in your head? :-)
Wheel1975 01-07-04, 01:11 PM Yep... Always self centered and looking for ways to improve myself, i was wondering if i were a thread killer...
as a side light I was interested in other dynamics...
People who chime in to summarize, people that just have to have the last word, etc.
Seemed like something potentially knowable that could be potentially useful.
joanrdtobe 01-07-04, 01:12 PM ALSO David...why does posting near the end of a thread make someone a thread killer? Maybe they are just "shy" about posting hear the beginning.....or wish to hear what others have said about a topic firsts.....No??
Also it may depend on the time the person gets around to reading the thread. If I killed any threads I am sorry. what would you define as a thread killer?

Potentially useable - yes. Useful - I dun no. Just more detail and data to throw into the analysis mill to keep one from seeing the forest for the trees...
Just because it can be knowable doesn't automatically elevate it to the status of worth knowing. Not saying that ignorance is bliss, but rather more like selective processing - only when proven neccessary. Oh - just plain curiosity counts - it's fun - but sometimes that knowledge can turn into a burden that can keep one from acheiving results that were readily acheivable while in ignorance. To summarize: pick your battles the war is long and the enemies many.

See - now at least one person became conscious of this knowledge and already with an apology and it's implied deterrence to writing a post that may conclude a thread. There's no benefit here really, is there?
Wheel1975 01-07-04, 01:39 PM Well, Why, how much "unintended" "unanticipated" consequence can I be held liable for in the acts and concerns of others?
Lighten up! I was hunting myself, no one else. Post for heavens sakes Post! Post last! (or try , < wicked knowing devious grin > )
It was just ... curiosity ... no blood need be spilt!
I know, I know. But in view of the fact that we're ADD, I felt that this inquiry was like the seed that eventually blossoms into a full fleged ADD thorny thicket and wanted to draw this possibility to your attention. But, by all means - have fun with it - it certainly an intersting avenue of investigation.
AND THE WOODEN SPOON AWARD GOES TOO?????????
sorry i have no idea where that came from, can i put it down to the HORRID day i had, please.
Hey no problem - in fact I didn't understand the context and would really apreciate if you explain - so I can understand it next time: what is "the wooden spoon award"?

As a sidebar comment...If you were looking for statistics on YOUR posts, the question might have been phrased differently (i.e. "Is there a way to identify the number of posts that have ended after I posted something")
By saying "could we...identify folks who are thread killers" has the significant potential to make everyone self conscious about posting, or second guessing what they posted, in fear of being labeled a "thread killer".
This is in no way an attack on you, Wheel...just how I read your post.

The wooden spoon award is somthing we did in the RAF alot.
To me it would mean some comment designed to creat a stir.
I think it was part of my sarcastic impulse problem.
I really did have a terrible day though i mean thw worst for ages and ages.
Ah...... you mean I "trolled"..... hmm well I can gurantee that I did not intend to do that - just made an observation that I felt I could use as evidence to support a position in a different conversation -that's it. Thanks for the "wooden spoon award" - I like it - an award for the best "troll" of the day...
Umm it wasnt meant for you, WHY. It was a general award for the content of the whole thread.
If it had been directed at a person then i would have put their name at the end.
Just out of interest is "trolled" any sort of reference to those mythical beasties?
Not sure - I always assumed it was in the "fishing" sense but here's what Google found:
1. [From the Usenet group alt.folklore.urban] To utter a posting on Usenet designed to attract predictable responses or flames; or, the post itself. Derives from the phrase "trolling for newbies" which in turn comes from mainstream "trolling", a style of fishing in which one trails bait through a likely spot hoping for a bite. The well-constructed troll is a post that induces lots of newbies and flamers to make themselves look even more clueless than they already do, while subtly conveying to the more savvy and experienced that it is in fact a deliberate troll. If you don't fall for the joke, you get to be in on it.
2. An individual who chronically trolls in sense 1; regularly posts specious arguments, flames or personal attacks to a newsgroup, discussion list, or in email for no other purpose than to annoy someone or disrupt a discussion.
Trolls are recognizable by the fact that the have no real interest in learning about the topic at hand - they simply want to utter flame bait. Like the ugly creatures they are named after, they exhibit no redeeming characteristics, and as such, they are recognized as a lower form of life on the net, as in, "Oh, ignore him, he's just a troll."
Oh i see.
Well i can tell you now that if that is trolling then "the wooden spoon award" is not even in the same league.
The wooden spoon award can even be given in praise, say if someone stired a stagnant situation up and got a good outcome.
Or mildly in fun, like a person who loves to play "devils advocate" but without winding anyone up.
I suppose it could be meant to insult but that would be rare and never likley from me.
i feal like i have hit a language barrier here a bit, lol. I should be used to that with my kids though.
maybe we have a spelling difference at work here too.
For the fishing analogy we would spell it "trawling" and that has a whole bunch of cheeky uses in the UK too.
Trawling - Duh! Of course, you're right - the spelling ahem "difference" ahem is all mine.
No problem at least we are in the same "ballpark" now.
Gee i am getting confident now, and american saying i beleive. Since it is widley known in the UK it probably went out of style a long time ago.

i just REALLY wasn't intending a homeland security invetigation!
It was writen as conceived, with the "secret" meaning intact but not exposed!
If this is going to take people to the dumper, DELETE the THREAD! REally!
Idle curiosity.... plain and simple.
I enjoyed this thread - it has many facets and spured some interesting exchanges. And hey I learned about "the wooden spoon award" and the propper spelling of trawling! As successful a thread as any.
maybe not the end destination it was designed for though, Why.
I also learned about Trolls and i sincerly hope i never meet one anywhere on the net.
Wheel1975 01-08-04, 07:38 AM Thank goodness!
Some unintended BENEFIT!
Yes i geuss good news is good news no matter what the source.

Hee Hee Just teasing
vinceptor 01-12-04, 08:48 PM I would prefer to make use of my scientific training and perform an experiment.
I'll just post now and see how much longer this thread goes on..........
Ken
pembroke 01-17-04, 01:43 PM well, one message longer, it seems - although i just wanted to read this, i now feel the immense urge to post to it.....
Wheel1975 01-24-04, 10:07 AM So you demonstrate that the last poster may not be the thread killer, just the most recent to walk by the wreckage and sign the guest book!
pembroke 01-24-04, 12:06 PM i guess so....well, i need to be late for something, since i managed to get a handle on that pretty well in my "real" life. (it only took 40 years).
So you demonstrate that the last poster may not be the thread killer, just the most recent to walk by the wreckage and sign the guest book!
