Has anyone experienced ringing of the ears while on adderall xr for an extended period of time? And if so, how long did it last? What can you do to get it to stop?.. Thanks, Pete:)

It's called tinnitis. Many meds can cause it, so can hearing problems. Stimulants are well known for causing tinnitis. The ringing might ease up after you are on it for a while, but it might not, and it can sometimes get worse. It varies a lot from person to person.

Me :D

There have been some other posts on Tinnitus and Ringing. Maybe do a search? (People don't want to post the same info repeatedly. :X)

I have done a search, but have found no solutions. I'm looking for someone who has succeeded in stopping the tinnitus and how they did it.

I actually have persistant, loud, non stop tinnitus from other causes. Since being on Adderall I don't hear it as loud and it doesn't bother me as much.

I know I have a head cold when it is all I can hear though. They say there are many medications which could cause it including asprin. You can also get it and hearing loss from being in loud enviroments like working in a karaoke bar or with loud machines.

In my case it was fom using loud clippers in a grooming shop. I wished I had protected my ears.

I DEFINATELY had tinitus when I took Adderall. I recently stopped taking it and have noticed the tinitus has almost completely disappeared. It's still there a bit at night, but not nearly as bothersome.

I got permanent tinnitus from using dexedrine + strattera. Now, when I take dexedrine or Adderall, my tinnitus get worse for a few days.

Not to scare anyone, but there are other causes of tinnitus. I would discuss with your doctor or preferably an ENT to make sure nothing else is going on. If it is the Adderall, the only thing that will make it stop is when you stop taking it. You can try having some background noise on if you find it annoying, like static or a noise machine.

I have never heard of tinnitus being a permanent side effect of adderall.

Yes, they checked for tumors in my ears when I first went and every three years I get an MRI, just to check, because my tinnitus is so bad.It could be many reasons under the sun and unfortunatly there are no medicines to stop it or lessen it.I wish they would do more research. I guess the Adderall just gets my mind off of the noise I hear in my head.I said noise not voices, ha ha:p

I've had tinitus for over a decade. (All of those 80's rock concerts I would attend as a teen!) As stated above, stims can aggravate it. In my case, its related to permanent hearing loss. It varies from high to low pitches throughout the week. I've learned to live with it for the most part, as my doctor says there is nothing that can be done for it. Its affected my life in a large degree, but again, one learns to adjust and live with it. The best way to get it off of your mind is to listen to music. (For me at least)

One other thought about tinnitus and ADderall (or other stimulant)

Tinnitus may often be present a long time before someone notices it. Having ADHD, it's possible that you never noticed it, but that, after starting on a stimulant and having increased concentration, you may now be more focussed in on the tinnitus. If that is the case, it's likely that you will notice it less if you stop the medication but it may not dissipate completely.

I've heard or read that ringing in the ears can be as sign of high/rising blood pressure.

I got permanent tinnitus from using dexedrine + strattera. Now, when I take dexedrine or Adderall, my tinnitus get worse for a few days. I find your story very interesting. You were never exposed to loud music, headphones, concerts, pubs, etc? It could have been just a couple of days.

When I got my T, I had started on Prozac *around* the same time, but I also listened to a hell of a lot of music in my headphones... I believe this is where the T occurred.

I would believe that if it was med induced T, it would eventually subside once the medication had stopped.

Also, have you had your hearing tested? I basically proved this by going to audiologist... I have a mild loss in that ear which tells me it was not my medication. Not trying to say your isn't, just find it interesting.

Also, could it be that stimulants flare the T rather than cause it?
