View Full Version : gave a bad presentation today :(
bumblebe 04-16-07, 05:18 PM :( I had to give a power point presentation in front of my psychology class today. I was so nervous, my hands were shaking so bad that I had to hide them under the table. I stuttered and turned red . I couldnt talk it was horrible. If that isn’t bad enough I have to re-do it on Wednesday because we ran out of time.
In a way this is my chance to redeem myself , but then all I can think is how hard that was, I am still shaking. L
awww...well, i hope since time passed that you moved onto the positive and try to get some practice time in. the nice thing about do-overs is that you usually do a lot better the 2nd time around. =) i dunno, whenever i get like what happened to you w/ your presentation, i almost feel a little better knowing that even non-add folks get that way too. =)
hope you treated yourself to some ice cream or fries or popcorn or something =) (okay so those are my own treats...mmm yum!)
bumblebe 04-17-07, 02:04 AM I only feel better now that I read your reply! But honestly it’s all I’ve been thinking about all day. I’ve worked up a phobia that’s bigger than any phobia I’ve ever had before. I know its going to happen to me...........Wednesday to be exact......I’m so scared. I hate this! I have way to many classes to take that involve public speaking to let this get the best of me now. Knowing this isn’t helping.
Thank you so much for your reply. Really. Ive been looking for it all day and you did make me feel better.
Veighen 04-17-07, 05:35 AM Wish I could offer some advice. I also hate, HATE, hate presenting, and, have actually missed classes and/or dropped classes BECAUSE I knew I had to present at some point.
Sad I know... but, it can be quite traumatic. I feel for you.. and I want to say that you are ten times braver then me for even attempting it.
i cant even get that far! You'll do awesome.. jsut remember that EVERYONE gets nervous!
Good luck!
The thing that gets me through a presentation is knowing that your classmates aren't juding you, they probably aren't even paying attention - they're just glad it isn't them up there. Good luck on your redo, try practicing in front of some friends in an empty classroom or lecture hall if you have the chance, I find that helps too!
QueensU_girl 04-17-07, 02:27 PM I know that I sound like a one-note: but the SP (sensorimotor psychotherapy) taught me how to track my bodily states and responses before they get all shaky and constricted (breathing problems).
Somatic awareness (esp. over breathing; anxiety tends to impair breathing!) rocks.
lychweake 04-20-07, 12:25 AM Somatic awareness (esp. over breathing; anxiety tends to impair breathing!) rocks. Absolutely...BTW, have you heard of the Feldenkrais method??? Its probably one of the greatest therapies that i've come along and its in that category of Somatic awareness.
But about the presentation...the last presentation I had to do was in my Pathology class and being that I know how bad I can be with public speaking...I wrote down my speech word for word and memorized about all of it...it took me the whole night..but you know I did better than most of the class and I didnt even use any of those stupid "quene cards" ..all from memory...but I did recite everything infront of a mirror word by word sentence by sentence.
It's all practice really, the only reason IMO that you didnt do well was you were not prepared. You probably didnt take the time necessary to rehearse the information. You know how I know?? Well....because the same thing would always keep happening to me all throughout the time I was in grade school...the "uhh and uhh that is my ...and "blank"..."studder" uhh" students laughing here and there at me, boy did I feel like a genius up there in front of all those people;)
So the last time around I decided that it will NEVER happen to me again, you must tell yourself that YOU WILL be able to talk about everything from memory during your speech. Really work at knowing your stuff and dont BS yourself in the process, make sure that you will be ready to make the others look unprepared:)
FrazzleDazzle 04-20-07, 09:14 PM OhMyGosh, I got nervous just reading about your presentation! Just like the others said, remember to breathe, and SMILE (it will help you relax, put it in your notes, on your computer, your hand, or your cheat sheet somewhere) and remember that no one is judging you, just let yourself SHINE. Don't drink espresso right beforehand either. :-) You will do FINE!
Swede63 04-20-07, 09:47 PM slow deep breathing really does help. I'll bet you will have a better time of it on Wednesday.:)

In a way this is my chance to redeem myself , but then all I can think is how hard that was, I am still shaking. LGood for you!!! Good that you tried it even though you were terribly nervous, and good that you are willing to give it another chance.
Please don't feel badly, most people would rather die (literally) than do public speaking.
What you need to know is, your classmates really want you to feel relaxed, and are almost all totally in sympathy with you. They are just like you, they care, and they know how you feel. They want you to do well. :)
Public speaking isn't everyone's cup of tea, but the fact that you are willing to get up and do it anyway really speaks of your courage and strength of character.
By the way, if you ever had to do public speaking as part of a future job, you should know that if you practice and deliver more speeches, your nervousness will decrease substantially, even if you never were truly at ease.
Hope you do better next time, I'm sure you will, BUT even if you don't, then don't beat yourself up too much, but remember you had the guts to try it twice. Great stuff!!!

auntchris 04-20-07, 11:37 PM bublebee, practic the presentation at home.
print it out and practice in front of the mirror.
Is the subject something you are famialiar with.
Stay calm, the more you practice the easy and calmer you will be.
CrAcKerKoReaN 04-22-07, 09:51 PM I didnt notice the mention of a public speaking class. I was and still a little am the same way until I had to take public speaking for school. That class helped tremendously.
I remember my second speech was a mess, I was all ready and started giving it. And well about 10 seconds in my mind goes blank and could not read my notes cards very well.
At the end of the semester I was able to give a speech like there was no tomorrow.
But like everybody else has said, all of us had to go through the same thing. And your class mates are in the same boat.
Like aunt chris said practice and you will do just fine.

auntchris 05-23-07, 09:51 AM Is that the same as behavior modification were the pscychologist helps you work on your breathing . My doctor and I do so that I can learn to destress be fore I stressout.

Thanks for asking:) Yes I did so much better the next time around. I had the rest of my group up there with me this time so that helped allot! (they saw how stressed I was the first time so helped me out by standing by me)
auntchris 05-28-07, 07:29 PM I am glad you feel better and more confident about your performance.
It makes a big difference Yeah.
