View Full Version : Costco and BARR
LittlePrincess 04-25-07, 03:03 PM Hey everyone. I'm getting ready to go to the doc for a new script of generic IR for the first time. I've been on Adderall XR for almost 3 years now (off and on) but unfortunately I'm out of insurance for right now.
I loved XR and it worked well for me, but it looks like I'm going to have to settle for the IR and get it at Costco. It's the only way I can afford it. :(
I've heard on these forums that Costco gives out the generic brand of "BARR." I've never actually tried the "BARR" version of Adderall IR but I've heard nothing but bad things about it on the forums.
Has anyone on here sucessfully received generic Adderall IR in anything OTHER THAN "BARR" from Costco? If so, please tell me how I can do this!
Any insight will be very helpful. I'm going to leave for the doctor here in just a few minutes...
jennyjay 04-25-07, 03:08 PM I got to Costco every month for mine and have never received anything but Barr generic.
LittlePrincess 04-25-07, 03:15 PM Hey Jenny. Thanks for replying! Does BARR seem okay to you? or have you had any problems with it? Have you compared to Shire or other generics?
I've had the Shire (BRAND) Adderall IR and also Ranbaxy (generic) IR and really couldn't tell a difference.
I'm just worried about the BARR. I sometimes get headaches/migraines so I'm afraid that maybe the BARR will trigger something.... Maybe it's all in my head. I've just heard such HORRIBLE things about BARR.
*sigh* Sorry for the ranting, everyone. :o
I'm just worked up since I have to give up my precious XR and switch to generic IR. :(
LittlePrincess 04-25-07, 03:15 PM Okay, I'm off to the doctor. I'll let you all know what I get. :) (Feel free to keep posting experiences/advice!)

These are the barr generic 20's
Matt S. 04-25-07, 05:14 PM They make a brand called Eon I believe that work fine, there is a 30 mg pink colored tablet that I call the "Stinky Pinky" it made me ill, I think Ranbaxy made those, the Barr 30 mg Adderall wasn't bad for me either I found Barr Dexedrine to be nasty and you usually get stuck with those too. But Eon is cheap too and maybe the pharmacy will help you if you ask. The Brand Adderall is pretty cheap the IR is anyhow.
driver8 04-25-07, 05:56 PM BARR actually purchased Adderall IR from Shire.
jennyjay 04-25-07, 06:03 PM driver, I had heard that and called Costco because I thought maybe the price would go up, but it didn't. Shire was not making money on the regualr stuff anymore, most pharmacy's didn't even carry the Shire brand name anymore. But, since they are about to lose the patent on the XR, they are coming out with something called a "pro-drug" that they say in ads in psyciatry mags will "revolutionize add treatment". :faint:
chad31687 04-25-07, 06:07 PM I switched from Adderall XR to IR 6 months ago (I'd been taking XR's for a little over 7 years now), and I personally love IR adderall much more than XR. I just built a tolerance to the XR's down to almost not even feeling them, and I think I've reached my tolerance plateau for the IR's, which still give me a little euphoric kick every day. Plus I can choose the best time to take the 2nd dose instead of an automatic 4 hour point. I'm not sure what company makes 'em though, I just know they're little orange tablets.
This advice probably comes too late, but maybe you can use it next month. If you were taking one 20 mg. XR each day, I believe that is equivalent to taking two 20 mg. IRs, spaced, say, 4 hours apart, each day. Have your doc write you a prescription for 40 mg. IR pills, and just CUT THOSE IN HALF. You have just cut your costs in half, too. IR is the same as XR, you just have to plan your meals accordingly.
jennyjay 04-26-07, 12:35 PM I am pretty sure that the highest is a 30 mg pill, I have never heard of 40 mg.
jennyjay 04-26-07, 01:32 PM I have been on adderall for a LONG time. I have tried XR when I had insurance. For me, I prefer IR, because you have more control with the IR. I don't know if you know about the patient assistance program that shire has for XR check this link and see if you qualify http://www.adderallxr.com/assets/pdf/AXRPAPBrochureJuly05.pdf
Anyway, I have a variey of generics (each only once, then it always went back to Barr) 20 mg pills I have received have been blue, pink and white with little light orange specs. I hated the pink ones. The blue ones where ok. The white ones, I can't really remember, I just know I thought they looked so strange. Don't obsess about what you have heard about the Barr generic. If you think you will get headachs, that will make it all the likely that you will. Its not as good as the real thing, but it will be one that costco has. Walgreens and CVS charge $180 for my rx that I get at costco for $43.00. That really makes me mad because before I knew about Costco, I paid that $180 many times. Now, I refuse to even shop at Walgreens or CVS. So, good luck with the IR.
Matt S. 04-26-07, 01:58 PM Stinky Pinkys...LOL
LittlePrincess 04-26-07, 04:49 PM Hey everyone! Thanks for all the responses!
I asked my doc to switch me to something that most closely mirrors Adderall XR but in a GENERIC form. So, my doc switched me from Adderall XR 30 mg once/day to "Dextroamphetamine ER" 15 mg twice/day.
Does this sound like a reasonable switch? What about costs? Costco or Walmart? Is only BARR available?
Matt S. 04-26-07, 05:25 PM It may be better if the d-amp in adderall is what works best of the four salts for you. in 30 mg of adderall there is 7.5 mg of dexedrine I believe and 30 mg of dexedrine would feel like a massive increase if you notice the d-apmhetamine the most. I like dexedrine better myself. I know that going from adderall to dexedrine was like a god-send for me.
Matt S. 04-26-07, 05:27 PM mallinckrodt makes an er preparation and since you are paying out of pocket I'd ride the pharmacy's leg to order those or even the brand name dexedrine spansules (which are fairly cheap and 100% superior to adderall xr)
overmind1632 04-27-07, 01:35 PM I take Barr 20 mg addy and its fine, theres nothing to worry about
LittlePrincess 04-27-07, 08:40 PM mallinckrodt makes an er preparation and since you are paying out of pocket I'd ride the pharmacy's leg to order those or even the brand name dexedrine spansules (which are fairly cheap and 100% superior to adderall xr)Hey mspen! I finally found a pharmacy to order it for me. They are ordering the Mallinckrodt Spansules and I can go pick them up on Monday.... However, for a 30 day supply (60 caps), it's costing me about $80. I've heard people without insurance getting 30 days supplies of their meds for around $20 or $25 (for Adderall IR, BARR from costco). I thought this prescription would be comparable, but I was WRONG.... and $80 is a lot more than I was hoping I'd be paying for my first script without insurance. :(
On the bright side... At least I get to try another med. Perhaps I'll like the Mallinckrodt Spansules better than Adderall XR. I guess I'll find out Monday! :)
hyperlitevip 06-30-07, 03:55 PM just to add to the convo, I found Ranbaxy to be crap as well :-(
stimpysuzie 06-30-07, 10:26 PM ok so I am on dexedrine 5mg in the afternoon to counteract the downs of Adderall xr 20mg. The adderall 20mg one tablet comes in at $148 for 40 tablets and the dexedrine 5mg came in at $40 for a supply of 40 and that was from shoppers drug mart in canada who also put a charge on for dispensing it.
Oh yey Canada !!
I pay for having ADHD !!
QueensU_girl 06-30-07, 11:21 PM Walmart is pretty cheap for dispensing fees !!
SDM (Shoppers Drug Mart) as you likely know, is among the mo$t expen$ive pharmacies in Canada.
However --> I get (90) 5mg tablets of brand name Dexedrine at Shoppers Drug Mart for $68.
Ask your Doctor to write your Rx for a 3 months' supply of dexedrine? (90 tablets?) He can still make you go in each month for your adderall.
I"m sure he'll understand.
QueensU_girl 06-30-07, 11:23 PM If you have problems paying for your meds, you can apply for Trillium via the Ontario Gov't.
