Yesterday was just great! ( sarcasm). I get a letter in the mail by my doctor who is leaving the area. That means I have to find someone else to prescribe adderall-xr. The problem is that most doctors don't treat ADD. We have a health clinic in town but none of them prescribe stimulants to anyone. I was going to the hospital but they have only two doctors, the one who is leaving and the other who has too many patients.

So I am trying a clinic 10 minutes out of town and hope like heck that they will help me... I am getting discouraged. I called another place and they aren't accepting new patients. Then I have medicaid and have to see doctors who will take it.

I have been so anxious and upset the past few days. I hope I don't have to quit taking it because it helps me so much and I have so much trouble functioning without it.

Anyways thought I would vent. Does anybody else have this problem or can give me some encouragement. Thanks.

Almost all Adult ADHD Psychiatrists that i have heard about (here in Canada) are affiliated with College or University Student Health Centres.
A lot of post-secondary students they see are very high IQ but with ADHD or LDs, i understand. At colleges and universities, they tend to treat -=mostly females-= and mostly -inattentives- and -combineds-. (I asked someone else in the know why this is? Like, where are all the hyper males? and they said that the hyperactive adult males are often winding up in conflict with the law due to their impulsivity and hyperactivity -- not the sort of adult client to be Rx-ing stimulants to; high diversion risk.)
So, anyway, yup, that's where the Adult ADHD Psychiatrists are -- at post-secondary places.
Maybe sign up and take a course for a term, to get in? <G>

PS

If you have your Test Documentation, you are more likely to get stimulants, if you go to a Psychiatrist.
LD/ADHD support centre's may have the names of Doctors who will see you.
Hard to search for you, as you do not list your city. "Illinois" is not that small!

Hi Jett...

I understand your frustration....I had an excellent doctor when I was first dx and lived in Texas. After moving to Ohio...and being on the "system" I had a hard time finding doctors that specilized and it seemed sometimes I knew more than they did. It ws especially had to find a good one for my son and myself.

I finally found one through my insurance through my job. He is phychiatrist, who specializes in Adult & Child ADD, and the duel diagnoses (addiction) and co-morbids (Bipolar, ODD , etc) He is wonderful but it was a long journey before I found him.

Have you tried going to an ADDA support group, and perhaps they can recommend some doctors? Have you asked your doctor (if he is not gone already) if he has a collegue that he can refer you too?

Here is the ADDA site there a few in Illinois...that might be a start?

I hope you find someone soon. But I am glad you found us so you can find some support.

Take care..

Hope
