It very well could be... there are many associations of bad handwriting with many traits beyond what was listed. My handwriting isn't too bad, but then again, I don't write very much, and when I do, it's not very much, and it's printing. It is painful for me to write for a long time. There was a thread a while back that included samples of member's writing, and not everyone had bad handwriting.
Yea, my handwriteing can kinda resemble a dislexic rat on cocane if im just a little careless,
I can write better than that (always print) but I have to go, very, very, very slow....
FrazzleDazzle 06-16-07, 10:11 AM I don't think it is uncommon at all. For DS and I, it is terrible handwriting with the death grip on the pen/pencil. For some, handwriting is a hand-eye issue, or a fine-motor, coordination, dexterity issue. This seems to be one thing that I am seeing the children undergoing the Dore program having less of an issue with through the treatment, seeing their handwriting is improving, along with other areas of fine motor, dexterity, eye/hand coordination. It seems to be part of the package for a lot of us with ADHD and other primaries and other tagalongs. As the primitive reflexes that were present become inhibited as they should be, and the part of the brain that affects these things gets stronger and does what it is suppposed to do, all of these issues start to peel away like onion layers through the treatment. I am finding it all very interesting.
dervish 06-16-07, 12:03 PM in high school one of my teachers descibed my handwriting as a chicken knocked over a bottle of ink and proceeded to walk across the paper. i've since made a concious effort to make my handwriting legible, which means no cursive and slightly improved. it wasn't easy though.
Crazy~Feet 06-16-07, 03:41 PM My child and I both have atrocious handwriting. I attribute this to our visual/spatial learning styles, as well as to ADHD.
Visual/Spatial Learning (http://209.85.165.104/search?q=cache:y3JoIMSAwSIJ:www.giftedservices.com .au/handouts/I%2520Think%2520in%2520Pictures%2520-%2520The%2520Visual%2520Spatial%2520Learner.doc+vi sual+spatial+learning+style+handwriting&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=6&gl=us&client=firefox-a)

auntchris 06-16-07, 03:48 PM I have great hand writing when I want to . When I am in class, taking notes and the teacher doesnot have a powerpoint up , and I am racing to get what the teacher says down on the paper that is when my handwriting gets sloppy.
ah09087 06-16-07, 04:19 PM I'm like Vhan. My writing is terrible but I can write neater. Its just that it take a really long time and a lot of concentration.
I think my handwriting is pretty good, so I didn't really unerstand why my doctor asked how my handwriting was when I was being assessed for ADHD.
Although when I'm very unfocussed my handwriting is terrible no matter how hard I try, it's like another person is writing.
QueensU_girl 06-16-07, 06:11 PM Some ADDers/LDers have Cerebellum problems that cause handwriting issues.
Try a keyboard or a fat foam pen grip thingy.
Crazy~Feet 06-16-07, 06:18 PM Some ADDers/LDers have Cerebellum problems that cause handwriting issues.
Try a keyboard or a fat foam pen grip thingy.I usually stick to strictly the keyboard, but I will give the foam pengrip a try soon...thanks for the advice :).
FrazzleDazzle 06-16-07, 06:58 PM For a while when I was writing quite a bit, I put the pen between my 2nd and 3rd finger, which took a lot of the pressure off of the structure of the hand that is "overused."
QueensUGirl, the cerebellum has been implicated in the handwriting issues in those with ADHD and LD's. This is the part of the brain that Dore and Learning Breakthrough and other movement based neruotherapies target and treat. Don't want to sound like an advert, but just to let folks know there sometimes is a solution to these issues, along with all the other issues that accompany them that are often more prevalent. :)
Stradivari 06-16-07, 08:45 PM I have really good handwriting. I always looked at it in an artistic way. I can draw very well also. Now, spelling.....:eyebrow:
Swede63 06-16-07, 09:31 PM I think there is something to be said about the use of computers and keyboards for the majority of our “writing” and how that effects penmanship.
meadd823 06-17-07, 02:26 AM Reminder is of topic;
Does anyone else here have extremely bad handwriting??
And I ask my self if this is due to my ADD and my impatience?
Brief explanations of possible causes and possible solutions / helpful tips are a welcome part of this discussion but lets not go over board. Saying my ADD treatement which is "XYZ" also helps with the hand writting problem is more than fine but can we leave it at that please.
This is just a general reminder to all participants; in no way it this meant to be an accusation of any kind. I am just trying to prevent trouble before it has a chance to prevent this discussion from being productive that is all.

My every day hand writing stinks but oddly enough I can do calligraphy. . . .one more paradox in my neurodiverse universe.
hmm Ill need to scan or take a digi pic of my handwriting lol
NonSequitur 06-17-07, 08:18 PM I also do calligraphy, but have abysmal handwriting. I can't even read it sometimes. I know a lot of calligraphers who say the same thing.
With calligraphy, I'm in the same place most of the time, with a slanted board or drafting table, I have a certain pen with a certain nib, and I'm holding the pen a certain way. It's like drawing, and I really concentrate and go one letter at a time. This often leads to spelling mistakes, but that's a different story.
For handwriting, I used to really wrap my fingers around the pen, and it took a long to relax my grip. Still, I'm not comfortable with a regular pen. Strangely, I sometimes feel more comfortable with a pen in my left hand, but then I write backwards.
mine sucks :o
