Hi everyone,<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

Does anyone have any experience with Provigil <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:PersonName w:st="on">or</st1:PersonName> know anything??? I am very nervous about the whole medication thing!!! <o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

A few weeks ago, I was diagnosed with ADHD at 38 yrs old. I am a bit freaked out however, at the same time relieved. This could explain a lot about who I am and possibly, why I am the way I am. I hope that makes sense...<o:p></o:p>

<o:p></o:p>

Anyway, the psychologist who did the testing recommended I see my primary care doct<st1:PersonName w:st="on">or</st1:PersonName> to discuss medication options. I was not comf<st1:PersonName w:st="on">or</st1:PersonName>table with that because of a previous situation which involved complications from chronic back pain and narcotic pain medications in which the doct<st1:PersonName w:st="on">or</st1:PersonName>’s office did not appropriately manage a serious and possibly life threatening situation. The doct<st1:PersonName w:st="on">or</st1:PersonName>'s office well... to say the least, made a mess of the whole situation. I am still dealing with the consequences of that experience. <o:p></o:p>

<o:p></o:p>

Ok, moving f<st1:PersonName w:st="on">or</st1:PersonName>ward; I went to see a neurologist who seems to be knowledgeable about ADHD. He also ran some tests and has prescribed Provigil. I am starting at 50mg per day and will be increasing each week until we reach 200mg per day f<st1:PersonName w:st="on">or</st1:PersonName> a week and then we will evaluate how things are going. <o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

Today is the first day of the medication and honestly, I don't feel much different. He called to check in on me today and said I won't notice much if anything until I have been on it a week. This m<st1:PersonName w:st="on">or</st1:PersonName>ning, I did feel like I had a bit m<st1:PersonName w:st="on">or</st1:PersonName>e control of a situation in which I was frustrated and a bit angry. I'm not sure if that is real <st1:PersonName w:st="on">or</st1:PersonName> a placebo affect??? Impulsiveness, especially with anger <st1:PersonName w:st="on">or</st1:PersonName> frustration is a huge problem f<st1:PersonName w:st="on">or</st1:PersonName> me. <o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

Any ideas, suggestions <st1:PersonName w:st="on">or</st1:PersonName> advice would be appreciated…<o:p></o:p>

<o:p></o:p>

<o:p></o:p>

Thanks f<st1:PersonName w:st="on">or</st1:PersonName> look 'in<o:p></o:p>

You won't feel anything for a week because it will take a week for you to get 100mg. Also, titrating provigil??? No, I think not. Titrating provigil is like titrating tylenol. If you feel anything on 50mg one a day it is placebo. There's no way provigil would help with impulsiveness.

I forgot to mention your doctor is an idiot and should learn more about the drugs that he prescribes. Provigil is twice a day... TWICE.

ventyourpain2k5,

Thanks for your response. I did confuse the issue a bit. I am suppposed to take it twice a day but just not on day one. I am the one who is concerned about the medication and side effects which is why we are starting out slowly.

To me Provigil or any stimulant is a bit different than tylenol and becasue of my past experiences with narcotic medications and the negative effecs they can have I think it is wise to error on the side of caution.

I was hoping for information, experiences, advice that sort of thing not critisism, personal attacks or negativity.

Does anything help with impulsivness???

Thanks...

Provigil and side effects? What? Provigil and negative effects like that with narcotics? What? Provigil = 3 side effects possible, low incidence rate, no addiction potential. It appears that since you had a bad experience with narcotic pain killers, you have revolutionized the way you treat medication, and this was a huge mistake on your part. A CII stimulant will help with impulsiveness.

Provigil did nothing for my ADHD. Adderall is really the only thing prescribed that worked. And I see the side effects of adderall being very similar to provigil - Ive taken both before. But think it through before you take a switch to adderall. It does wonders for your ADHD, but is a b*tch goddess- It gives w/ one hand and takes with the other. All side efffects w/ these medications are manageable, but can take their toll.

I have had great success with Provigil and ADHD. I began right at 200mg and had no ill effects as a result (and I am a big fan of titrating up for meds that require it, like Strattera). I vastly prefer Provigil to stimulants in fact. I get all the focus and none of the freakiness. I would definitely say however that an effective dose BEGINS at 200mg, and I am even considering trying 300mg soon to see if I do even better. My biggest issue with this med is the cost.

FYI, I also take Strattera because it improves my executive function. Provigil gives me the ability to "engage" in a task, but I need the Strattera as well so as not to be distracted. The combination for me has been miraculous.

Also, many people on here who have described difficulty addressing executive function and focus together have had success with Strattera + a stimulant.

I think your doctor has made a good choice for a first medication. My main advice would be to remain patient while he works you up to 200mg.

Oseman77,<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

Thanks so much f<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:PersonName w:st="on">or</st1:PersonName> sharing your thoughts. I appreciate your honesty and understanding. <o:p></o:p>

Adderall is one of the medications the doct<st1:PersonName w:st="on">or</st1:PersonName> and I discussed trying if the Provigil does not w<st1:PersonName w:st="on">or</st1:PersonName>k out. He shared your feelings as well about Adderall taking with one hand and giving with the other. That is why he felt starting with Provigil first would be a good idea especially given my concerns with medications in general. <o:p></o:p>

I think he is trying to w<st1:PersonName w:st="on">or</st1:PersonName>k with me on this so I am comf<st1:PersonName w:st="on">or</st1:PersonName>table with the choice to take medication. I have been through a great deal and am m<st1:PersonName w:st="on">or</st1:PersonName>e than a little gun shy where medications are concerned. <o:p></o:p>

Thanks again...<o:p></o:p>

So glad you chimed in... I saw your post right after I started this thread. Your w<st1:PersonName w:st="on">or</st1:PersonName>ds are very much appreciated. <o:p></o:p>

F<st1:PersonName w:st="on">or</st1:PersonName>tunately, my insurance coverage f<st1:PersonName w:st="on">or</st1:PersonName> prescriptions is great, only $40.00 f<st1:PersonName w:st="on">or</st1:PersonName> a 3 month supply!!! I am pretty lucky in this arena huh?<o:p></o:p>

I was not sure what executive function was as it applied to me. I find that when I try to apply my knowledge to myself I somehow get confused. I am a teacher with a strong special education background however, when it comes to relating what I know to me I seem to be a little slow on the uptake. <o:p></o:p>

<o:p></o:p>
Anyway, I found a great web-site that helped me connect it all to me. I guess there-in lies the problem huh??? It is so clear now… how this is a problem f<st1:PersonName w:st="on">or</st1:PersonName> me. If we were discussing one of my students, I could have w<st1:PersonName w:st="on">or</st1:PersonName>ked this all out just fine. Very strange, how when it is about me I go completely blank. Oh yeah, the web-site by the way is: http://www.ncld.org/content/view/865/391/ (http://www.ncld.org/content/view/865/391/) <o:p></o:p>

<o:p></o:p>
The doct<st1:PersonName w:st="on">or</st1:PersonName> did talk about Straterra as another good option but I'm not sure if he brought up combining the two. I will talk to him about that as we move through this process. <o:p></o:p>

<o:p></o:p>
I know I can hang in there as we move towards the 200mg dose. It may sound silly but with all I have been through with the pain meds I was prescribed I feel I need to proceed slowly and be very cautious. At the risk of sounding paranoid, complications can arise from even the most benign medications. <o:p></o:p>

Thanks again f<st1:PersonName w:st="on">or</st1:PersonName> sharing your thoughts and personal experiences. It is so helpful to hear things from someone who has been there.<o:p></o:p>

<o:p></o:p>
Thanks again to you both…<o:p></o:p>
Take care,<o:p></o:p>

Provigil is great for waking you up but it still doesn't work as well as traditional stimulants like amphetamines.

I take 400mg of Provigil and 60mg of Adderall XR a day.

BTW, nuvigil was approved today (not for adhd tho)

Nuvigil contains just one enantiomer and provigil contains the racemate, so half the dose of provigil is the dose of nuvigil.

R-modafinil vs S-modafinil??? They are using that naming system? Why? I thought sexy organic chemists used the R/S system and weird pharmaceutical people used D/L system. I can't find any info on s-modafinil which makes me think that it is a super awesome drug that the government is keeping a secret.

Or perhaps it's because it's of little interest (because it has little effect). S-modafinil is a component of Provigil (modafinil). If S-modafinil had a significant effect, then the equivalent dose of nuvigil to provilgil would not be half.

I'm posting about my experiences on a thread called " Has anyone taken PROVIGIL for ADD/ADHD? ".
I'd like to know yours.
