View Full Version : Not able to read long posts... dyslexia?
Theodor 06-22-07, 07:31 AM Do you have problem reading long posts or threads?
I'm really struggling!!! If the post are over 5 lines, I start thinking of other things, and that I'm reading don't make any sence for me... When reading I have to consentrate real hard. Is I alone with this? Will Ritalin make this better?
Almost 5 lines... I stop here ;)
Fraz_2006 06-22-07, 08:46 AM I have this problem alot aswell, but im not sure if ritalin would help or not, I havent take any since i was 6!!
Em, what were we talking about again? :faint:
Im on ritalin right now, low dose of 10 mg twice a day( started last tuesday this is day 11), Im more calm, however I still have that same problem. I cant really read long threads. I can however read one long post that's semi long, but any more and my brain just gives up.. Ritalin is not really helping my concentration that much, maybe because of the dose or maybe because it just wont work for me. Ill have to talk to my doc about it when I see him this coming tuesday.
I can't read long threads. I can't concentrate long enough and I sort of jump around the post.
I can sometimes though when im in a hyperfocussed sort of mood.
Johnnny 06-22-07, 12:05 PM some days i can and cant read long posts but i wouldn attribute it to dyslexia
Crazy~Feet 06-22-07, 12:23 PM I agree with Johnnny, this sounds more like simple inattentive distractability to me.
Theodor 06-22-07, 03:56 PM I can't read long threads. I can't concentrate long enough and I sort of jump around the post.
I can sometimes though when im in a hyperfocussed sort of mood.Yepp, this is how it is. I'm jumping around in the post. Skipping som lines and reads the rest to get finnish with the post :)
some days i can and cant read long posts but i wouldn attribute it to dyslexiaI have been tested and told that I have high level of dyslexia. After getting the ADD diagnose, I think maby that's the result of the "reading problem".

Almost 5 lines... I stop here ;)Actually I find that people here are just really longwinded.
I am a consummate reader and I find I can't make it through most of the posts here.
I can't do it either. I can't read any posts that are extremely long without paragraphs. Or any posts like this:
"zomg i no wut u pplz r talkin about... long postz lyk ttttttttttttttttttttlly suck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
That drives me insane! :faint:
ah09087 06-23-07, 03:19 AM That is just innattention. From someone who has dyslexia I can confidently say that from what you described you do not have dyslexia.
I can't read long threads either, can't keep concentrated long enough :P
It's not dyslexia
meadd823 06-23-07, 04:37 PM I am both dyslexic and ADD - predominantly hyperactive both of my conditions are professionally diagnosed.
The simplistic Un-medicated ADD version
When reading I have to concentrate real hard.
the dyslexia means you will have to concentrate more. . . .ADD screws with the ability to consciously control the attention span
Is I alone with this?
Hardly
Will Ritalin make this better?
Yes
The more comprehensive medicated ADDer format.
My conditions interact and the presence of both become more noticeable.
This means that due to my dyslexia I will have to concentrate more while reading and responding than one who doesn't have dyslexia. Because I have ADD remaining focused and sitting still is virtually impossible when I am un-medicated.
Medication increases my ability to remain focused thus improves my ability to participate in longer more complex threads. I also employ non-medical strategies such as secondary sensory stimuli to assist, example while reading I listen to music over head phones. I also position my computer so it faces a wall which decreases visual distractions, Last of all I threaten to kill people who screw with me in the middle of longer post or responses requiring research. .
Medication makes my participation in longer more complex threads possible to the point I now able to excel in theses discussions therefore I enjoy them. I am able to read those post that employ the use of paragraphs to separate their thoughts more easily but I no longer experience restrictions as to the type or length of threads/post I can enjoy.
I am have more patience when responding so I can not only read longer more complex threads/ post I can write them as well.
QueensU_girl 06-23-07, 10:33 PM That is "just inattention". LOL
chillinhh 06-24-07, 12:34 AM I was wondering the same thing also. I'm glad I'm not alone. I knew people with ADD have trouble focusing but i was thinking to my self, alot of the time i can't keep reading after a few sentences or a paragraph ("theres no way add is this bad!"), what the hell is wrong with me, lol.
I have the patience to read long threads, for instance going through pages of posts all being short, but when i get to that long post, i start reading a few sentences then my patience gives in.
Just started strattera, not seeing much effect yet but only on my first week.
Have you tried taking any meds yet?
ah09087 06-24-07, 01:17 AM That is "just inattention". LOLMaybe that wasn't the right phrase to use. I'm sorry if it seemed like I was belittling ADD. I have ADHD too so I know how hard it is to try to read those sea scroll sized posts.:D
It's just that when you see words like this:

or this:
http://www.eplt.educ.ubc.ca/accessibility/accessibility/images/new_dyslexia_passage_sm.jpg
or this:
http://www.kidshealth.org/kid/health_problems/learning_problem/dyslexia.html
it gets a little harder to read then not being able to focus on long paragraphs.
Theodor 06-24-07, 02:41 AM I was wondering the same thing also. I'm glad I'm not alone. I knew people with ADD have trouble focusing but i was thinking to my self, alot of the time i can't keep reading after a few sentences or a paragraph ("theres no way add is this bad!"), what the hell is wrong with me, lol. It's not good with that "what's wrong with me" feeling. I had to change job because of my problem (before I knew i had ADD). That was really hard.
Have you tried taking any meds yet?I started 2 weeks ago but I'm still on a low dose. 10mg + 5mg + 5mg with Ritalin. I'm not feeling any big changes, yet... I hope i will :)
meadd823 06-24-07, 04:50 AM I can't read long threads either, can't keep concentrated long enough :P
It's not dyslexia
In a general sense this is an accurate statement. Dyslexia in it self isn't a problem of attention but of learning the written word, it can effect reading and writing. Being dyslexic means I have to concentrate more when reading but especially true with writing. I have many more steps than most when I respond to a post.
Johnnny 06-24-07, 01:38 PM i keep my posts short ad sweet for my inattentive brothers and sisters out there:cool:.
thats what she said, ohhhhhhhhhh lol :faint:
Carrickfergus 06-25-07, 05:26 PM I really don't think it's dyslexia. I don't even think most of the time it's JUST because of ADD. If not reading long posts was something people did only because they're ADD, the netslang "tl;dr" (too long; didn't read) wouldn't exist.
Theodor 06-29-07, 06:26 PM I have been professionally diagnosed. Maby I should ask for a new dyslexia diagnose/test now that I'm on Ritalin, to see if that makes a change?
replystreet 06-29-07, 08:25 PM It come from just not being intersted in what you are reading. Your mind is probably pre-occupied. If you read something that really grabbed your attention you could read it no matter how long it is.
