Wow....it has been a while since I fell back on my taking better care of myself kick,......and last week is a blur of drinking and saying stupid things.......beer and self loathing in windsor....anyway, I woke up this morning and looked at myself in the mirror and realized I feel absolutely crappy and realized I am feeling unhappy again.....I must change this asap....I will go and takl to my doctor this week and see what can be done...:D I think this is a good thing though....usually I dont catch myself slipping this quickly......usually I have to hit rock bottom before I can pull myself back up.....anyway....thats all for now......:D :D :D :D

Lately, I've been entertaining the radical notion that maybe I don't have to hit rockbottom before something changes. I'm in a different "rockbottom" but I think there might be parallels. Sometimes you gotta lose everything to see whatcha got. I'm tired of doing this routinely, though. Yes, talk to the Dr. and don't give yourself too much s**t.

Congrats to you for recognizing what is going on and doing something about it before it gets worse...

thanks both of you for your support....I am quitting smoking as well....the up and down routine is what I would like to stop.....I would like to stay on top for quite a while....

Good call! I am all too familiar with the up and down routine (I think I've been on a heedless plunge lately! But nothing serious, though I have lightened up on smoking). Good luck quiting the smokes too; I know how tough that can be. But not impossible!

missing_cues that sounds like huge progress to me. Catching things and acting on the slide "before" it gets as ugly as it can get sounds like great news..

I hope you are able to arrest the slide.. strength to you.
Ian.

Are you on any particular kind of diet?

I know that heavy carbs and sugars tend to make me go through crashes and highs. Caffeine is another one that does the same thing.

Reducing the carbs has helped flatten out the roller coaster ride for me too..

I just figured this out last year about the depth of the negative impact of carbs on my life. I seem to be the last to know how I'm feeling..heh

I have taken a very moderate approach to reducing carbs though. I eat lots of fruits and veggies.. I cut way back on sugar, bread, pasta, rice and potatoes. I increased my fibre with ground flax seed. My body loves the change.

Cheers! Ian.

It was very simple Gary. Once I looked into it a bit my only question was how to get the fibre up to compensate for the lost course carbs like beans and whole grains. Ground flax seed did this nicely as it's a non soluble fibre.

I've got a very "hot" metabolism although it seems to be slowing some in my mid 40's heh

I began to consider this after a day trip fishing with local friend talked about losing a bunch of weight just by dropping the bread, pasta, rice, sugar and spuds. I found the Atkins diet on-line but it sounded like the rest of my "extreme" past so I talked to a nutritionist that I knew here.

She thought the reduced carbs sounded like a great idea so I just started to play. It was really easy for me at first because I was never panicy for food like I get sometimes if I'm eating too many hot fuels.

The tough part came when my doctor suggested I reduce my cholesterol or she was going to write me a perscription to deal with the high levels. So now it's a bit trickier to get the protein up without the associated bad fats. I get tested next week to see If my exercise has helped much or if it's primarily genetic and requires meds regardless. I hope I can make a dent in the cholesterol by diet and exercise but I somehow doubt it.. I think most of my family has issues with this.

Like I have said before here my approach hasn't been very careful or disciplined. I simply cut way back on those white flour and sugar items. I lots a bunch of weight too which was a bonus. I'm not over weight but it helps to feel good when I'm trim. The exercise is helping keep my mental state off the roller coaster too but that's a different thread I'm sure. < g >

Take good care. Ian.

Sipping on a ground flax seed, soymilk, fresh cranberry and orange smoothie ---mmmm.
Just the simple step of removing junk food has helped regulate my blood sugar and controlled the mood swings somewhat. I'm with ya.
