View Full Version : Went to GP about ADD who said "it's bull****"
BeardedChimp 06-26-07, 11:03 AM Hi,
New to the forums, took me over a month to join with the intention, yep i do enjoy procrastination.
Anyway... as i'm sure many of you here have had to go through, this year my girl friend suggested i might have ADD, the more i read about it the more it described my problems.
Went to the disability support office (part of my uni), who then made me do IQ tests among other things and said i more than likely have ADD, but go see your GP.
I was already quite worried about several things, and i was hoping this trip to the GP might eh, relax me a bit.
Instead he beat about the bush a bit, then said "you seem to be an intelligent fella, you need to realise a lot of this (beat about the bush some more), is ehh bull****".
It could have been enough to put me over the edge into really being quite upset, but ahh thats not me. Instead after I left i just started laughing, clearly this doctor should be more careful about how he phrases things.
So where i go from here is a bit odd for me. As i said before i'm at uni in manchester, going back home to Northern Ireland on saturday so any GP stuff here is quite defunct anyway.
Have a nice day,
Chimp
Chimp, I admire your positive attitude. I hope you find a better doctor in Northern Ireland.
QueensU_girl 06-26-07, 12:38 PM GPs, and even Psychiatrists & Psychologists don't know much abut ADHD and Executive (frontal lobe) Dysfunction, i find.
It is important to get to a Testing Psychologist or Educational Psychologist. They know about it, and can give you Testing or Refer you for Testing.
Testing takes about EIGHT HOURS of games, memory tests, questions, pencil/paper tests, keyboard tests, headphone listening tests, and IQ tests.

Getting a diagnosis of ADD in the UK is tough. I'm in Scotland and my GP is marginally more positive than yours but I'm still awaiting my first appointment with the community mental health team six months on.
Unless NI has dramatically better funded mental health service than Scotland don't hold your breath about getting a referral to anyone with any knowledge of ADD during the summer vacation. There are so many gatekeepers to get past before getting to anyone with any training in Adult ADD that it would try the patience of a saint....which doesn't really make it easy for those of us with appointment keeping problems.
I've found the best thing is to read up on ADD and work out how its affecting your life and try to work around the issues. Self awareness is the first step. I'm seeing a clinical hypnotherapist with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and childhood ADD experience privately and it seems to be helping a bit.

I wonder if they realize that their, the doctors, attitudes that are the reason people avoid seeing them. It's such a shame. What a complete waste. I'll likely never see one for this reason. I mean, why bother?
Obviously we are smarter than they are. That's not right.
KatieADD 06-28-07, 10:59 AM Hi Im new to this site, and newly diagnosed with adult ADD.. I don't even know if I am posting in the right section, but I have some questions, If anyone can answer I'd appreciate it...
1. Does adderall make anyone else feel depressed? Late afternoon I feel so depressed and have really morbid thoughts that I never had before Adderall... It does give me more focused energy most of the day, but this side effect is creepy...
Also.. Does it make a difference if the pharmacist gave me a generic as opposed to the real thing? I also take Mucinex for my allergies which has ephedrine in it... does that cause a problem? Anyone know the answers to any of these?
Thanks :)

Thanks :)Being new to this site myself, I have run across several others that describe depressed or even similar reactions to adderall, and especially so with the generic, though I dont know why... it is possible that it is a side affect to the drug wearing off too, be sure to communicate this with your docter. Alot of ADDers prefer the continuity of an all day release form because its not so much of a roller coaster ride. Inquire about that when talking to your doctor. Be sure as well to go through clinical trials with the drug therapy, and ask about different types of stimulants as some people with adverse or strange reactions to drugs like adderell will respond better to other stims like dexedrine. I'm not a expert, but have run across a pleathora of info the last week or so on it. Good Luck, and welcome to the site.
