I cannot and refuse to watch and a movie without subtitles? you guys too? is this add or ocd. I mean I cannot pay attention to nor follow a movie, but I feel like I am missing things without subtitles. It hasnt always been this way, I had a roommate in college who grew up with a deaf friend whom had to watch the subtitles to understand the movie.. he said it was addictive, well I hated the damn subtitles, and before too long caught myself turning them on, needless to say I got my girlfriend addicted to them too. its terrible. i think.

Well, if you have an obsession about watching movies with subtitles AND you have a compulsion to watch movies with subtitles, AND if not acting on the compulsion causes anxiety, then it is probably OCD.

If it is just a habit that you have gotten into, it is NOT OCD... it's just a habit.

thanks speedo, I will avoid watching the movie, if friends wont allow me to use subtitles, or if the movies dont have them. Isnt being avoidant part of ocd. I dont neccasarily get anxious though... i dont think. i really dont think I know what bad anxiety feels like though..

I love a good movie, but often find it difficult to watch movies with a group. Perhaps the subtitles help you focus?

I don't think that being avoidant is diagnostic for OCD.

Why don't you pick a week and watch movies with NO subtitles just to see how it goes ?

Heck , watch a single movie with no subtitles and see what happens.

I think that if this were OCD that you would definitely know that there was a problem.

Sometimes people with OCD have more than one ritual. Myself, I check things over and over. Sometimes I repeat the last word or words of a sentence (stutter), I also have obsessive thoughts and ideas. I get songs stuck in my head for days at a time. ... The last time It was "So long and thanks for all the fish" that kept playing in my head for 4 days!

If you do have OCD you need to take it seriously and talk to a doctor about it. In a lot of cases it can be treated.

I'm with imnapl I think that the subtitle help you to focus on the movie.

From your writing, your perspective of writing appears to be more ADDish than OCDish, but like speedo wrote, it appears to be a habit (which may have resulted due to ADD issues). The type of addiction in OCD results from negative reinforcement (i.e. anxiety), not positive reinforcement (i.e. look, this is really helping, maybe I can keep doing it...).

When my children were living at home I kept the sub-titles on because when one has teens running in and out, phones ringing, twins fighting it is hard to HEAR the show without having to constantly tell people to STFU. I also learned with the sub-titles I could read the sub-titles and converse with my kids without loosing track of either the show or conversation.

I didn't watch much TV so when I watched a movie I was actually interested in I got annoyed when one of the girls interrupted, sub-titles meant I could watch a movie and still be accessible to my kids. Gary finds them distracting so I don't use them any more besides all the kids are now grown so it is much quieter at my house.

I missed the sub-titles at first but I didn't have anxiety issues over turning them off, I did however find it harder to concentrate on a movie. So I agree that these sub-titles may make being able to remain focused easier. Noise is very distracting to me without the sub-titles and if some one is talking it becomes almost impossible soooo if Gary doesn't want me to turn the sub-titles on then he has STFU when I am watching TV . . . It took a while but he did get the hang of shutting up the once a month I am actually interested in any thing on TV.
