View Full Version : buying meds in Canada
Christiana 01-20-04, 01:22 AM I have heard that meds are sold much cheaper in Canada than in the US... is this true? And if so, is it legal to buy them there and bring them over the border? ;)
(I'm 45 minutes from the border... it sure would be nice!!)
waywardclam 01-20-04, 04:00 AM This is VERY true, and yes it is legal (providing you pay duty it if applicable). Canada has government regulations on drug pricing that the US does not have, so in some cases, drugs can be one fifth or even less than that of the equivalent price down there. Plus, your dollar is generally stronger on everything up here anyways...
To find out what the rules are on cross-border shopping, ask the customs people next time on the way UP here. Or phone them now.
It REALLY ****es off the pharmaceutical companies when you do this. I consider that a very strong fringe benefit to the whole idea.
Not sure the specifics on ADD meds, whether they would be any cheaper. Your best bet is to come up here some weekend and ask in a pharmacy.
[If you want to know why I think it is a GOOD thing to **** off pharmaceutical companies, then I can find you links on stories about them refusing to sell life-saving drugs to Canada, because we won't allow them to sell them at the overinflated prices they demand... therefore I say, do not feel bad, SHAFT them, in whatever way you can, and ENJOY doing it. Just my 2 cents...]
Christiana 01-20-04, 03:07 PM I totally agree on trying to screw over the med companies! Pfeizer does a lot of research in my town and they recently bought a bunch of land that we used for off-roading. it ****es me off! but anyway, that's not a very good reason.... lol -yours is much better and I support it 100%!
stupid drug companies!!!! I'm going to windsor next weekend just for this purpose.
FlakeyGirl 01-20-04, 03:30 PM I'm closer to Mexico. Does anybody know about getting meds from there? Do I have to hire a mule? Yo no affordo. I am in Michigan from time to time (I have people in the Detroit Metro area and Iron Mt., just across the lake from you WWC, and no they are not in the prison.) I may check out Canada's pharmacies also. What about the mail order companies? Anyone with info? We got many people on ADD meds living under our roof, me + 3/5 kids and I sure could use a discount of some kind.
Gregster 01-20-04, 05:37 PM I think the law allows you to bring in 3 months supply - but I'm not sure on that - that's the max the mail order places will ship.
I'd call a Canadian pharmacy in a town close to you and ask - I'm sure they fill lots of US scripts if they are close to the border, so they might know the rules. And ask at US customs too!
Note that the price you will pay will be even less than the mail order Canadian companies charge - eg. Remeron 30mg - US cost: $100 US, Canadian Mail order cost: $49 US, I paid yesterday at Walmart pharmacy in Canada - $45 Canadian (fees included)

ROFLMAO!!!! hehehehehe :D
Sorry.. dunno nothing about mail order companies, my instinct would be to be suspicious of them at first...
What med are you on christina
45 minutes from the border
going to windsor
What part of Detroit do you live in
just the area
Christiana 01-20-04, 07:29 PM Garry, I havne't actually started any yet (except lexapro, and i got a bunch of samples instead of having to buy it ;))
i'm more thinking about the future, i'm supposed to start strattera in a few weeks, but i don't know what the prescription will even be yet.
I actually live in ann arbor, so it's 45 minutes from detroit... but close enough to windsor... maybe it's really an hour to windsor when you include going THROUGH detroit and customs and everything.
Christiana 01-20-04, 07:31 PM oh yeah, another thing i was thinking about is that i dont' know what insurance will cover and what it won't... so i might not even have to do it anyway.
(they might cover stratteraa since theres no generic, but if i try ritilin they might not... ya know.)
then again i don't even know if theyll cover stuff like this anyway.
FlakeyGirl 01-21-04, 10:06 AM Can you bring schedule IIIs across borders? I thought it might be trafficking. I'm not joking, I don't want anyone to get into trouble.
aforceforgood 01-21-04, 01:43 PM It's not trafficking if you have a prescription, right?
Wheezie 01-21-04, 02:19 PM My husband's grandfather got his prescriptions filled last time he was in Canada. He needed to get a Canadian doctor to write the script, so, he paid for a doctor visit and his drugs for *much* less than just the drugs here. I think the pharmacy gave him the name of a doctor that he saw the next day.
When you follow up on getting your scripts filled in Canada, you may want to ask if a they can fill a presciption written by a U.S. doctor.
Gregster 01-22-04, 10:58 AM One problem with getting Strattera in Canada - you can't yet.
It's been approved here, but Eli Lilly isn't it shipping yet (the last I heard anyway). The rumours I've read say that it's selling too well in the US right now and supplies are going there. I know it's shipping in the U.K. so I'll bet that they are keeping it out of Canada to prevent cross-border shopping! Eli Lilly makes way more money on US drugs so as long as demand exceeds supply, we won't see it in Canada, I'll bet.
FlakeyGirl 01-22-04, 11:23 AM Greedy SOBs:mad:
Christiana 01-23-04, 01:17 AM yeah
