View Full Version : A virtual Camping Trip

Were going to plan a virtual ADD camping trip and see what develops

There are no rules except total respect for your fellow campers and 110 % respect for nature and all other virtual living things in the Virtual Camping Area

Lets have some fun

Garry
01-20-04, 10:30 PM
so

do we want to go to a camp ground with showers and toilets and a swimming pool or out in the bush with no toilets or showers and lots of bugs

waywardclam
01-20-04, 10:50 PM
You're not biased at all in this decision, I see :D :D :D

Garry
01-20-04, 10:56 PM
Grin I think I understand what your dsaying Way , that Id rather have showers and such

so correct me if Im wrong

but no id rather go to the bush myself

Christiana
01-20-04, 11:36 PM
I'd rather go to the bush too :D (I've done it actually! for 2 days in the U.P. with a freind of mine - we went swimming in this really awesome river instead of showers... we did bring a tent though (I'd never sleep without it...))

it's a lot cheaper that way, but i suspect that most people would rather have a real campground and not a wilderness.

Christiana
01-20-04, 11:39 PM
another thing is since we are from all over the place, should we have some sort of car-pool thing to help people get there from far away? and where do you think the best place would be?

excluding people from overseas, we have quite a few in canada and all over the US. maybe we'd have to just have one for a certain region or somthing.

Christiana
01-20-04, 11:47 PM
another idea is to rent a lodge or some other retreat-type building. We used to do this all the time when i was in girl scouts and through my church. That way you can also do it in the winter without being super cold.

if you do the lodge thing then there would be:

-cost of the lodge for like 3 days or somthing
-food
-paper plates and all that (can be eliminated by asking people to bring their own - did that in girl scouts too)
-campfire stuff if you want it (of COURSE we do!!)
-dishwashing stuff
ummm.... now i forget everything else lol

you can also do somthing at a place which has a bunch of cabins and a big lodge, or tents and a lodge, or whatever is out there. Then you can have families, or put girls seperate from boys, etc.

Christiana
01-20-04, 11:56 PM
Some Activities:

-ice breakers or other meeting new people stuff

-ADD-oriented games (i.e. Taboo, which involves getting people to say a certain word without using the words that you most associate with that word...)

-sharing tips and other stuff

-working through some kind of book or workshop or somthing

-very active and creative activities (like capture the flag!!! that was always my favorite...)

-support, bonding, or growth activities

-maybe just talking about struggles and issues we have trouble coming to terms with

-possibly having some sort of expert or speaker come to talk (they might not want to come out to the bush though... we'd have to give them lots of food!! :D :D :D :D

any more? what do you guys think?

waywardclam
01-21-04, 12:26 AM
Woohooo on the games! Sign me up for Taboo and Capture the Flag, and allow me to recommend Balderdash and Cranium.

And if we're doing classes, I'll teach anyone who wants to learn how to do improv comedy... this also gives us a "prefab" activity to do near the end of the event... :D :D :D

Hmmm... not a lot of camping going on in this plan... it has turned into an ADD convention... hehehe

Christiana
01-21-04, 12:36 AM
i thought it was SUPPOSED to be an ADD convention? kinda.... like a way to have a less expensive alternative to a convention?

but then again, just plain ol' camping is fun too!! :D

Brianne
01-21-04, 02:15 AM
Woooooooooo Hoooooooooo! camping that I know a thing or two about. My dad taught wilderness school for outward bound. He was also a boyscout til he finished high school! He taught me how to cook things over a fire so it taste good. Cooking over a fire is much different than a stove. I can help with that! :D I have all sorts of camping gear too. Even a stove LOL! I can take everyone out at night for a navagation tour with the stars as our guide. I know how to do that too! We don't need a compass!
Ok can't think of anything else right now I'll come back later. FUN!

waywardclam
01-21-04, 02:39 AM
Mmmm pretty pretty bonfire... pretty flames... must poke with stick... mmmmmm :D :D :D

Brianne
01-21-04, 02:55 AM
LOL cool!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Christiana
01-21-04, 03:01 AM
omg i'm such a pyro... i think i'm putting that picture as my background now!! thanks!!

(now i just need a stick to poke at it with too hehe)

Draga
01-21-04, 03:03 AM
I guess a bush beats a caffader anyday.....hehe it sounds like fun.

Draga
01-21-04, 03:05 AM
lol A bush or a toilet....depends on pine needles.....oh what fun that would be picking needles out my bum all night!LOL

waywardclam
01-21-04, 03:35 AM
There are just so many things I am NOT going to say in response to that... :D :D :D

Garry
01-21-04, 07:28 AM
well Id say were going to a bush some where

we need to find a bush that is central to the for of us so far

give ne the city you live in or a close apporimation of where you lve and I will map something out

waywardclam
01-21-04, 08:10 AM
I'm in Thunder Bay, that's about a 8-9 hour drive north of Minneapolis.

Christiana
01-21-04, 09:32 AM
I'm in Ann Arbor MI, when you do your map remember that i have to go around the great lakes to get anywhwere. (the three ways are through the windsor tunnel, through Ohio or up through the U.P. to wisconsin depending on where we decide to go... it takes somewhere between 9 and 11 hours to get out through the UP)

FlakeyGirl
01-21-04, 10:31 AM
Everyplace is so freakin' cold this time of year! May I propose San Clemente State Beach in Southern California?

http://www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=646

It is so much fun and so beautiful. It is great to fall asleep with the waves breaking down below you. I can teach you all how to surf! I would also love to learn how to do improv.

Christiana
01-21-04, 11:29 AM
I agree its definately too cold here right now - only 10 degrees here right now, and it gets down to 0 at night!! (fahrenheit) I'm sure it's much colder though in canada of course.

i'm all for california -t he ocean would be sweet!! too bad it'd take me 3 days to drive there. (I had it all planned out to take a trip to pasadina for the rose bowl, but coudln't afford it...)

if we were going to do the trip up north we can always pretend it's summer!!

FlakeyGirl
01-21-04, 12:05 PM
Another advantage to SoCal....no bugs! They have showers, but they are very nasty. I recommend the enormous saline bath.

01-21-04, 02:48 PM
Since this is vertual camping i could be vertually there (only about 3000 miles away)
I could sleep in a vertual tent (actually a nice comfortable king sized bed)
I could cook by a vertual fire (actual a nice conventional gas cooker)
Get vertually eaten alive by bugs (more likley get attactked by pooches and slept on)
Sing vertual campfire songs (so no one actually has to listent to my appaling singing) around a vertual campfire (much safer for me as i wouldnt be able to burn the woods down or loose my eyebrows lighting it (4 star is great for lighting fires) )

The only down side is that i will be here alone and not there with a whole bunch of cool people.

biker
01-21-04, 02:55 PM
I am in Seattle so I am all for So Cal. I think that camping would be fine(tents etc.) But since it is virtual I would be happy to meet anywhere. I think food and how we work that would be the biggest issue. Maybe we should do everyone brings for themselves. Count me in on the games. I love capture the flag. I think I am funny, but it would be great to learn how to present it.

Christiana
01-21-04, 03:14 PM
ok i got the flag!!! I'm hidign it somewhere... heheehee

AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this is SO much fun!!! (i'm not kidding!! i'm actually rolling on the floor LMAO over here!!)

lololollol

biker
01-21-04, 03:23 PM
Well this should be interesting playing capture the flag across North America. I think you have hind the flag at one end of the continent or the other. You may have to give me the flag because I am on the west coast. Why yes I think I need hide the flag. Only playing of course.

FlakeyGirl
01-21-04, 06:33 PM
Dont worry about food gymsocks, there is a Del Taco close by and a good donut shop.

biker
01-21-04, 06:39 PM
Great, I love tacos and all kinds of mexican food. I will try to edit my posts more carefully. I noticed I am missing words and misspelling.

waywardclam
01-21-04, 06:50 PM
/me steals the flag from Christiana and hides it in the back of Wheel's briefs

biker
01-21-04, 06:53 PM
Well what happened to giving the flag to me? Nothing against Wheel, but I do not know how many people are going to want to try and capture the flag. I think I will go rest with some tacos.

Christiana
01-21-04, 10:30 PM
lol yeah... but what if wheel is really a spy and is on the other team? (i guess that makes it my team huh?) LOL HA!! our plan worked!!!

waywardclam
01-21-04, 10:55 PM
D'oh! Outmaneuvered again :D

Garry
01-22-04, 12:04 AM
Were definatly letting our ADD show

We were planning a camping trip and now were playing nationwide capture the flag

And I dont know how to play

What are the rules

I want to play to

waywardclam
01-22-04, 12:59 AM
Rules???

What are these "Rules" you speak of?

Garry
01-22-04, 01:11 AM
Oh !!!!! OK

Garry
01-22-04, 01:16 AM
Well im going to have to think real hard about reaching into wheels brief to get the flag

Mabee one of the girls will get it back

Brianne
01-22-04, 01:30 AM
LOL! I'll go get the flag wheel seems to be asleep on this anyway he'll never know. ..........................unless i give him a wedge while I am there LOL! I am evil...................and because of my ADD I will hide the flag so well I won't remember where I put it. hehehehehe :p :p :p :p

Garry
01-22-04, 01:44 AM
Ok Ill steal the flag from Bri now that she has relieved it from Wheels shorts.

Maybe we need a rule about that one there Clam

waywardclam
01-22-04, 02:01 AM
Asleep at the Wheel, huh?

:D

For the rules, let's play it as per the rules for Calvinball, ok?

I'm gonna have to take a time out, I am falling asleep here myself. Sorry guys. Have a good one :D

capri
01-22-04, 05:54 AM
Since everyones fell asleep and i just dont sleep, I have crept over and nicked the Flag, and boy can i run fast so good luck getting it back. :D :D

FlakeyGirl
01-22-04, 10:55 AM
/me making bacon & eggs for everyone over campfire.

biker
01-22-04, 11:20 AM
Make mine over easy. I am taking a break from capture the flag since it is in England at this point. I am tired from going to Canda and Michigan hoping to be given the flag. Another ADD trait I assumed I was getting the flag and never bothered to ask anyone else.

pembroke
01-22-04, 11:24 AM
fg - i'm with you on the california camp site. loved it when we were there this past summer. we were a little further north, so it was chilly at night on the pacific, but the view was definitely worth it. we stayed at a state forest 4 miles south of Lucia (which is south of Big Sur).

I'll bring the stuff to make s'mores...

biker
01-22-04, 11:32 AM
I think I will spend the cammping trip eating I am likeing all the food ideas. I am going to bring my bicycle so I don't end up gaining tons of weight. I am sure there are some great rides to go on up and down the Pacific coast highway.

FlakeyGirl
01-22-04, 11:34 AM
San Clemente is warm, relatively. The area is notorious for sharks. They seek the warm water in the winter.

FlakeyGirl
01-22-04, 11:45 AM
Also some very great hikes. This is in Holy Jim Canyon. The name comes from a legend that a reclusive miner who inhabited the place had a vocabulary which consisted of nothing but profanity.

capri
01-22-04, 01:00 PM
I am right there with ya FG, you can almost feal that ice cold water cant you.

By the way i sent the flag out to saudi with my hubby. He doesnt play games so he has probably put it up high someplace to spoil the fun. I suggest a tall person go try and get it back.

FlakeyGirl
01-22-04, 01:12 PM
Whale watching, anyone....

FlakeyGirl
01-22-04, 01:19 PM
We could also see the migratory monarchs here in their winter home this time of year....

FlakeyGirl
01-22-04, 01:25 PM
^

FlakeyGirl
01-22-04, 01:27 PM
We wont be able to avoid these guys...

FlakeyGirl
01-22-04, 01:28 PM
We may run into a couple of these fellas, too!

FlakeyGirl
01-22-04, 01:31 PM
Shhhh.....

Christiana
01-22-04, 04:13 PM
lol we have deer like those on our campus! (even though its int he middle of the city... lol - there's a big woods near us so they always come over and hang out by the library; i see them alot since i'm there studying so late ;))

I like california too!! i want to go there so bad... ocean... ahhh.... all we have here is LAKES!!! (although granted lake superior is pretty sweet.... it's just a WEE bit too cold for swimming though... lol)

Christiana
01-22-04, 04:24 PM
so you all dont' know how to play capture the flag huh?

WELL!!!!!!!!!!!! here's the basic idea:

split the playing area into two sides, each team has a flag (or whatever you want to use)and hides it somewhere on their side before the game starts. the object is to find the other team's flag and get it over to your side - whoever does that first WINS.

When you cross over into enemy territory they can tag you - then you go inot their jail. to get out one of your teammates has to tag you without getting tagged themselves - then you have a free walk back to your own side, but aren't allowed to look for the flag.

if you find the flag but can't make it all the way back to your own side then you have to drop the flag where you are and go to jail. the enemy isn't allowed to re-hide the flag (usually you play so that they can't gaurd it closer than 5 feet or 10 feet or whatever you feel like doing - otherwise someone could just sit on it and the game would be over)

usually you have someone gaurd the jail, but you dont' HAVE to, there are lots of strategies. it really takes about 6 people to be any fun, but with a smaller group you also have to play in a smaller area or else it's just too hard.

what's calvinball? i've never heard of it!

Christiana
01-22-04, 04:30 PM
i'm the oldest of 6 kids, and we used to play this game ALL the time... (in the summer we'd play outside dawn to dusk every single day - other games also, but capture the flag and kick the can were my favorites )

we usually played with the front yard as one team and backyard as the other team - the backyard is a LOT bigger with more places to hide the flag, but also a lot harder to gaurd than the front. so relaly there were disadvantages and advantages to both... kinda like ADD vs. non-ADD ;)

we had a skinny "side-yard" on either side of the house, so that always ended up being a choking point for us --- you'd end up in a staredown with the person gaurding the other side :D it was SO much fun... man... i wish it were warm outside!!

lol i still played outside a lot until i was like 17... all my freinds had "grown up" and just watched tv all the time...

FlakeyGirl
01-22-04, 04:54 PM
We played this nonstop with the boys in our group home. It will really wear you out. P.S. I'v hidden the flag in another thread.

FlakeyGirl
01-22-04, 05:01 PM
mmmmmmmmm........

waywardclam
01-22-04, 06:30 PM
You don't know what Calvinball is?

It is the only game on the planet that could be labeled "ADD-Ball" and the name would more or less fit...

waywardclam
01-22-04, 06:34 PM
Okay, after some searching here is what I think the best page describing Calvinball is:

waywardclam

My dog Lima
liked to roam.
One day he came wanderin' home.
Little untidy, little unclean.
Where oh where has LIMA BEAN?

(this song has as many stanzas as you can stand(za) :*), just think of another type of bean and name your dog.)

Christiana
01-23-04, 01:20 AM
i made up my own tune, so that's fine :D

My dog Kidney
liked to roam.
One day he came wanderin' home.

Garry
01-23-04, 05:33 PM
The flag in another thread

You get two bonus points for ingenuity and a kick in the but for destroying the game

soon as we go looking in anther thread we will forget where we were in this thread

biker
01-23-04, 05:58 PM
On the positive side at least the flag is not in Saudi anymore. This is turning into a pretty good trip. I think it is my turn to cook. I am doing an easy but good one. I am doing chicken breasts in your choice of marinade.

FlakeyGirl
01-23-04, 06:03 PM
I'll take teryaki, please.

"Taking a trip without leaving the farm"

I think thats what we have just done and if we did all get together to go real camping I think we would end up on the funny farm

Does anybody have a receipe for taking food wrapping it in aluminum foil and sticking it in the embers to cook overnight? I remember some such thing but no details. It may not be so much a receipe as a technique.

FlakeyGirl
01-23-04, 07:03 PM
kum-bah-yah!

Garry
01-23-04, 07:38 PM
when you go camping take a piece of copper pipe about 6 inches long

like house plumbing pipe

slice a pice of rubber hose(gargen hose) and force it into the pipe

throgh it in the fire when the fire is down to a lot of hot coals

the rubber hose gasses and the copper oxide from the pipe makes the fire all different collors

(dosesnt smell very good so stay upwind from the fire

Christiana
01-23-04, 08:47 PM
i dunno about cooking it overnight, but i've done baked apples and baked potatoes in aluminum foil before!! it's so good... mmmm... (ps thanks for the extra chicken Jim!)

for baked apples you cut out the core, then stuff it with butter, brown sugar, and raisins (i don't remember proportions, but i think it's to your tastes anyway). the skin and everything stays on the apple, then you wrap it in tin foil and cook it for however long you feel like...

you can do it in the microwave too, but just don't use tin foil! (lol i did it before... more than once!)

i used to always make them after school :)

anyone want a baked apple?? i'm putting a whole bunch on the fire right now!

waywardclam
01-24-04, 01:36 AM

FlakeyGirl
01-24-04, 09:29 AM
MMM, apples sound good. What DO you wrap them in for the microwave, btw?

Relax, WWC, Southern California is virtually mosquito-free! There is not enough moisture to sustain their habitat. Come throw some stuff in the fire.

FlakeyGirl
01-24-04, 09:31 AM
OOOOHHH, pretty fire, Garry!

Pine cones are good for the fire, too. They explode AND smell good.

pembroke
01-24-04, 12:11 PM
and they're great for starting fires, too. my favorite kindling.

marshmallow, anyone? everybody have their marshmallow roasting stick? no, no - don't cut one off of a live tree. look for 'em on the ground......mmmmmm.

waywardclam
01-24-04, 02:59 PM
MMmm ya just sold me on SoCal right there. Skeeters are TERRIBLE up here.

Pine branches also fantastic for fires... preferably the dried out ones that are turning orange... big flames! :D

Garry
01-24-04, 09:29 PM
Here comes Smokey the Bear

capri
01-25-04, 08:37 AM
Great Bears, I love bears.

Oops maybe not, just gonna climb this tree till he is gone.

"how is it you get rid of bears again, ANYBODY!!!!!!"

FlakeyGirl
01-25-04, 08:51 AM
I think you just have to wait them out. Or call the park ranger from your cell phone. But some climb trees, at least some of the ones in North America can.

capri
01-25-04, 09:32 AM
They look so darned cute though, dont they?

From up here they dont look so big either.

FlakeyGirl
01-25-04, 09:35 AM
I have placed some meat and garbage a mile down the way. They should be leaving soon and you can climb down.

capri
01-25-04, 09:39 AM
FG you are so kind they look like they are moving off.

Did i mention how good i am at going UP trees.

FlakeyGirl

Last resort

capri
01-25-04, 10:33 AM
Effective though, suddenly climbing down is not a problem.

wonder if there is any chicken left?

Christiana
01-25-04, 01:03 PM
i think with the apples in the microwave you dont' wrap them in anything... but i honestly can't remember now!! lol - i haven't made any in a few years. (i'm pretty sure not saran wrap though)

WW- mosquitos are pretty bad here too, too many wetlands and junk.

FlakeyGirl
01-25-04, 03:45 PM
Okay, five+ days on this camping trip and my hygiene is rapidly declining. I'm gonna drive about 40 minutes south and have myself a proper vacation. Will anyone join me? I'll put it all on my virtual credit card:D

http://www.hoteldel.com/

Christiana
01-25-04, 08:09 PM
i'll join you!! (can i put it on your credit card too though? lol)

Garry
01-25-04, 08:28 PM
That sure looks better than camping

and on your credit card

FlakeyGirl
01-25-04, 09:29 PM
Sure, I'll pick up the whole virtual tab!

christiana - it's 19 degrees here, too. and has been in the single digits the past 2 weeks.... and the wind chill is a killer. I've been driving my kid to school every morning, because i don't want her waiting for the bus which is supposed to come at 7:30, but doesn't make it until 7:55 some times.....

FG - i'll take a hot chocolate, please ..... ;)

Garry

Hey, who says I can't sing campfire/lounge songs in a hotel bar? I'll catch up when I'm darned good and ready. :D

I work security in a hotel. Who's going to throw me out? :D

capri
01-27-04, 09:04 AM
Ah this is nice, no wildlife (well no furry/scaly or insectile wildlife).

Whats this loung singer singing anyway.

Dont mind if i tag along on your vertual CC, FG?

FlakeyGirl
01-27-04, 09:12 AM
Go right ahead----raid the mini-bar, get a massage, steal some towels or a luxurious bathrobe!

I don't know what he's singing, just tip him generously and maybe he'll stop.;)

pembroke
01-27-04, 09:16 AM

Well be happy I am not the singer. Last time I tried singing 2 dogs died. Clam are you a piano bar singer or doing karioke? I am going back to the hot tub I still smell like camp fires. I think I would like to order a burger while I soak anyone want to join me?Not in a bad way.

FlakeyGirl
01-27-04, 11:00 AM
I'll get a burger, but I'll pass on the hot tub. I have a personal policy against them. My husband works with pools and spas and you would not believe the crud that is in there (visible and invisible).

I will go for a swim though.

biker
01-27-04, 11:21 AM
Well maybe I will swim but I have probably been exposed to all that junk all ready. I was a male ADD batchelor until I was 36. I am going to stick to the hot tub until I get to hot then I will jump in the pool.
FG,
Are there any sight seeing stuff to do? I would like to go exploring.

FlakeyGirl
01-27-04, 11:32 AM

Nobody playing at the Murph (I refuse to call it the other name) right now but if we stay a couple of months...

FlakeyGirl
01-27-04, 11:40 AM
ahhhh....Spring is in the air...

biker
01-27-04, 11:45 AM
FG,
I love baseball. It is getting close. Actually I wont call it by its name but I beleive the Padres have a new stadium this year. So they won't be playing at the murph. I think we should take a road trip over to phoenix and hit spring training. I will have to root for Seattle even though I am on a very long virtual trip with my fellow ADDers. Give me some sun, a hot dog, a beer and a baseball game and I am very happy.

FlakeyGirl
01-27-04, 11:54 AM
LOL, when people ask me what I think heaven looks like, I picture Dodger Stadium:D You just described my perfect day, well maybe 2 beers & two Dodger dogs. I'm in for the side trip!

biker
01-27-04, 12:02 PM
I am with you there. I saw my second ever pro baseball game at Dodger stadium. One good thing about my marriage is my wife loves baseball too. There are actually a mumber of good things. I just have not looked for those as much as I should. We go to a fair number of games. Go M's!
Well i will gladly do the side trip. There will be lots of everything there. I think I will go check out the schedule and see what games we want to see. Who do those who want to go want to see play? Then I am going to the zoo. I think tomorrow I am going to head up to Disneyland. All our welcome I have rented 2 mini vans with my virtual credit card.

Well it seems like So Cal is a little warmer than Gary's backyard. Well we may need to go to Florida to so we can see the Sox for Pem. I love rides so count me in on all of em. I think I will pass on small world FG. Its not a man type of a ride.

You guys are getting creamed. In Seattle it is not even raining today. Very mild. Well here is a hot chocolate to everyone who is in the frigid cold. I think there is a lot of you.

pembroke
01-27-04, 04:14 PM
not yet - snow expected to start at 3:00am here.... my daughter is counting on a snow day....our new superintendant closes school as often as the old one didn't....

thank for the *warm* wishes.

biker

Here if there is one flake it is the top story on the news. Usually if it snows more than an inch the whole town becomes an accident prone mess. Glad you liked the chocolate.

pembroke
01-27-04, 09:17 PM
kinda like Texas. My sister-in-law called one day because the place was closed down for 1/2 inch of snow and ice..... we, of course, laughed.

Back into the hot tub i go. I'm all chilly again.

pembroke
01-28-04, 07:12 PM
beach. i hate sand. how about taking a tour to hollyweird? See all the stars on the walk of fame, and the foot and handprints in front of Graumann's Chinese? You wouldn't believe some of the names.....Marx bros, Clark Gable (be still, my heart).....

Garry
01-28-04, 10:01 PM

Christiana
01-28-04, 10:16 PM

plus 61F is a little cold for the beach I think (that's about 17C for you canadians)

FlakeyGirl
01-29-04, 10:08 AM
Yes, I know but it is not crowded. Even though the water temp is in the forties (what is the conversion factor, C.?) I have a wetsuit and I am going surfing. Tourists, sheeesh:p

biker
01-29-04, 10:28 AM
I will do some body surfing for about 5 minutes than I will head to the hot tub. Don,t worry I am wearing a suit.

I will go. Want to go to La Jolla. There is a huge park there above the beach. If we go to the far end of the park we can watch all the seals laying around.

Lets go riding now.

biker
