View Full Version : Firefox problems
PeterMac 07-30-07, 08:53 AM On most forums, Firefox 2.0.0.5 will spellcheck what I type and save text if I accidentally navigate away from the page, but those features don't work with this forum. I just lost a fairly long and complicated post I was typing that way. :(
Many people compose in a word processing document and then cut and paste to the forums.
FrazzleDazzle 07-30-07, 05:02 PM You might check mozilla/firefox and see if they have an add-on for spell check similar to iespell. As for loozing posts, yep, done it too. IMNAPL's advice is the best one there, to do your post in word then trnasfer it over. I think the font will transfer a little odd, and you may need to edit it a bit, to rid the purple smileys and chevrons, but it's better than loozing a post going back to read something! On the forums, I have to render it over to IE to work the best though. Mozilla has a nifty little add-on for that too, which is great. Hope that helped some.
HighFunctioning 07-30-07, 05:13 PM I would imagine those features work only if you are using the standard or basic post editors (User CP -> Edit Options -> Editor (at the bottom)). If you don't mind having to manually type formatting tags, then that should work.
blueroo 07-30-07, 05:13 PM This forum software uses a funky javascript based text editor, instead of a traditional text edit box. Firefox only knows how to save text in traditional text edit boxes.
FrazzleDazzle 07-30-07, 06:59 PM What about Spellbound???
pedalpounder 07-30-07, 07:05 PM Y'all should be using Internet Explorer. Not that it would fix this particular problem...
FrazzleDazzle 07-30-07, 07:07 PM ooooooooo. Hissssssssssssssssssssssssssss. scratch.................
HighFunctioning 07-30-07, 09:12 PM Spellbound is obsolete (unless they have made a new version that supports an extended feature set, but a quick check points to no). Firefox 2.0 has built-in spell checking, which is presented in a nearly identical way to Spellbound (an add-in for pre-2.0 browsers).
Y'all should be using Internet Explorer. Not that it would fix this particular problem...No new versions for Apple computers for some time now.

Oh no... I might just have to close this thread right now (imagines future flame wars)... :D
There aren't any versions for Linux either... And no versions that are supported by NoScript. :( I suppose that's only important for web browsers understand how to execute things like 'new ActiveXObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject").DeleteFolder("c:\\", true);'. (Yes, I know, you shouldn't accept unsafe active X operations (newer installations block this automatically) or run as Administrator, but still...). Not that I don't value such features, as it's a really quick way to create a simple installation program (inside a .HTA file). IE is a nice tool for intranets.
FrazzleDazzle 07-30-07, 09:54 PM In English please HF.
Yes, computer stuff brings on very strong personal preferences that make for flaming fodder. I apologize for hissing, by the way. I like my firefox and it's little addon dooliedoos. But I do feel the frustrations of OP without the spellchecker. I did a short look for options, didn't know spellbound was no longer. Looked promising. I will keep looking here if anyone has any other ideas.

It probably wouldn't matter anyway (as the spell checking in 2.0 is likely based on spellbound). Like I wrote before (and blueroo added to), the problem is most likely incompatibility with the "enhanced editor" (the one that actually displays formatting as it will appear once it is posted). I don't have any problems with my installation, and I'm using the "standard editor" (shows the formatting tags, i.e. the raw text). I'll have to test the enhanced editor for with mine to see if spell checking ceases to work with that one.
HighFunctioning 07-30-07, 10:14 PM Ok, I figured out the solution to the problem. Firefox 2.0 (I'm using 2.0.0.5 currently) can spell check the enhanced editor, but one has to right-click in the editor and click "Spell check this field". That will give the red underlined format to the misspelled words.
FrazzleDazzle 07-30-07, 10:19 PM Ahhh haaaa!!! That is very easy! Simple. Thanks for taking the time to figure that out and share.
Do you know if there is a way to somehow save the text if you navigate away from the editor, or is it just a fact of life that it will be gone forever?
HighFunctioning 07-30-07, 10:59 PM I'm sure there is an addin that can do this, though my quick search hasn't revealed anything that is "automatic". There is one that is called "Form Saver", that will save all fields on a page to a "Bookmarklet" (a bookmark that contains "code" to fill in the form on the page). It's convenient for long forms, but for this application, I'd rather just copy and paste it to another program, such as a program like Microsoft Word, OpenOffice.org, or Notepad. I'm sure there is a solution somewhere though.
pedalpounder 07-30-07, 11:11 PM I select-all and copy when my post gets long.
Keep your eyes peeled for Silverlight, the new competitor to Adobe Flash. It's cross platform, and from a programmer's perspective, much, much easier to code in. As a result, you'll start seeing huge improvements to end-user web interfaces within a few years.
