I have been doing research on ADHD becasue my step-son has been diagnosed with it. He is having many behavior problems and mood changes, which my husbands ex wife it blaming on him. My step-son is now 9 but has been taking Zyrtec since he was 3. WHile doing research I found this forum about users of Zyrtec and what the side effects of it are. I thought I would pass this information on just in case anyone else can use this information.

I have read your post 3x. I don't really understand your question.

Zyrtec is an antihistamine used for allergy control.

Are you saying that Zyrtec is causing his behavioural and mood problems?

ADHD has to be present before age 6 for a diagnosis to be made.

Other things can cause Hyperactivity in kids, as well, including an unsettled homelife. (You mention step parents.)

NB. Little boys with "ADHD" who have behavioural problems can have Conduct Disorder or Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

Zyrtec is mildly centrally active. It is a "second generation" antihistamine (in the same class as Claritin). It does cross the BBB (blood brain barrier), but not easily. It has been known to cause very mild sedation in some. In my experience, it didn't cause noticeable effects for me. Not to say that your situation isn't different.

My son has ADHD and allergies, when he was swithced to zrytek he was calm, quiet and still for 3 weeks, I almost thought that zyrtek was the answer to his hyperactivity, but eventually the body adjusted to it and he turned back to normal, and a bit worse. My dr. said that zrtek does cross the barrier, it may have some effect but it is always temporary. She did switch him to the little white pill version, she said that the chemicals used to mask the flavor and make it feel like banana/grape flavor made some kids hyper, specially because that chemical crossed the brain barrier with the rest of the meds... A few days later with the pill, he came back to his "normal"

I am not a doctor, this is just whant happened with my kid

My step-son is now 9Perhaps doing some research on divorce and its effect on young children would be more help? If my mother was blaming my behaviour on my father, it would sure mess with my mind.
