My doctor currently has me taking 30mg, three times a day of Adderall. It's working great, but now she keeps bringing up the issue of switching to XR. I've told her I don't have a problem taking the medication three times a day, and that I would prefer not to switch, but she keeps raising the issue. Does anybody have any ideas what I could tell her to shut her up?:D

My doctor was pushing XR for a while very early on. I was already on IR and not comfortable with the XR (I can't even remember why now), but the other thing was that my ins co pay is way higher for XR and I'm currently making about 1/3 of my former salary, so I told my doc this and said for cost purposes I'd prefer to stay with IR and try to make it work. He hasn't mentioned XR since, so I guess it did the trick!

Thanks, I'll try that. I noticed that the cost of the IR was much less because I could get it in generic form. I'm not sure if XR is even available in generic.

What do you have to lose by trying it?

I have tried two IR's, Ranbaxy and Barr and the brand name XR works better for me.

Unfortunately the XR only lasts appr. four hours for me.

It's not uncommon for XR users to be prescribed more than one per day.

I would give it a try and see how it works...

I'm just worried. What do they say about messing around with a good thing?

I should probably add a disclaimer. I think that was my concern, or along those lines. Actually, I had already been using IR and my dosage had been upped once. When he brought up switching to XR he wanted me to take it once a day, see how it went and then go back to see him. And I thought, man, I'm already on this path, and if I go on the XR once a day and it doesn't work that's a few more weeks of "waiting" to go back and try something else. And since this was the first med I've ever been prescribed that might help my symptoms, I was like, no way am I going to add another month or maybe longer to my trial and error period here!

But (and this is the disclaimer part) my situation is a tiny bit different, because I was given the Adderall for ADD and for fatigue and stuff, and I really was so tired and weak that waiting any longer than necessary to get to a beneficial dose was not an option!

I can totally relate to that. I didn't want to wait another month(s) to get to the effect I was going for either, and now that I'm there I think, why change?

Of course everyone is different, but personally I prefer Adderall XR.

I've recently switched from Adderall XR 30mg/day to Dextroamphetamine 30mg/day (taken as 10mg 3 times daily) because of cost. I don't have insurance right now.

Taking the Dex (Mallinckrodt) instead of Adderall XR is saving me over $100 per month and it is most DEFINITELY worth it to me. The Dex is working well enough to make the savings worthwhile.

However, if cost isn't an issue for you.... Maybe listen to your doc and give it a try.... why not? What have you got to lose?
