got my Sept Sci-Am today and noted an article on Brain and Food (This is your brain on food by Kristin Leutwyler-Ozelli) linking obesity, addiction and dopamine. Part of the article indicates that addicts and obese people have a lower level of "D2" dopamine receptors in the striatum of the brain than the complementary group of non addicts and non-obese individuals.
In addition the online sci-am has this article on OCD, http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?articleID=8FA30FD0-E7F2-99DF-3FB5F3548EFAB15B&chanID=sa003 also focussing on neurotransmission in the striatum of the brain, specifically the protein created by the SAPAP3 gene which promotes the neuroreceptors for glutamate, producing better inter-neuron transmission. The researchers stumbled upon the single gene SAPAP3's role in OCD in mice by accident.
Interesting stuff
