Today I called a clinic about getting tested and was told the testing could cost as much as $1200. Is this reasonable/normal? Can insurance pay for this? (I know, it depends on the policy, but still curious.)

To be honest, the cost of getting help as much as anything is what has prevented me form doing so up to now. Just thought I'd see what your experiences have been.

I know this should have probably been posted in the counselling forum, but there doesn't seem to be much traffic over there. Sorry if this is a problem.

My husband's insurance paid for his testing. So there's hope that others do as well!

I don't remember the exact figure, I'm thinking it was about $1300, over two to three hours, then an additional visit for the results. No problem with coverage.

To have my son evaluated by an educational neuropsych, the cash price was around 1200. What the billed the insurance was nearly twice that, and I have yet to hear if it the coding ect passed muster with the insurance company. All the ducks were in a row to start, but the billing lady whom I've built quite a rapport with over the last 3 months assured me she would work her magic to get it covered, and was used to the run-around the insurance gives these types of evaluations.

So, check with your insurance company, the office you plan to go to, and get everything in order as best you can FIRST, and the likelyhood of coverage increases. That is, if you are in an insurance system like an HMO.

One note, the office did say they would code the diagnosis as "medical health" rather than "mental/behavrioral health." Therein was the key to coverage.

It was well worth it, whatever the cost may be. I hope that you can follow through with it! Let us know!

my college paid for my testing. student aid offices often have $$$ for disabled students.

My school's disability office and financial aid offices helped me.

Part time students may be able to access testing too.

Note that this is not just for young people. i was 33 when tested at college.

Do you currently have a job or attend college or have benefits under parents/spouse?

I went to my local Mental health facility, and I got on the sliding scale fee. 45.00 for the year for me and all the visits I wanted, including testing, seeing a psychiatrist and a seperate therapist and groups. I would look around in your town and see if there is any county services like this.

Only problem with this is I have is, I get treatment in the same place as some of the staff at my work also work at (I work with some of the Mental health staff)... and we take clients out to mental health ( I work with crazy people..ha!) So i can go to take a client in and go in for my appointment also...:eyebrow:

I really appreciate all your repsones. It has been very informative to hear of all of your experiences. Besides the cost associated with counselling, I've also been reluctant because of privacy issues. I know that's kind of crazy in this day and age, but it's just something I'd just as soon keep to myself.

I've scheduled a consultation at a clinic that also does testing, so we'll see where it goes. I'll call them about the insurance issues, and also look at my policy if I can find it. I'm sure it's in one of my "piles of important stuff."

Thanks again.
