View Full Version : Could my mother possibly have ADHD?
jeremynd 08-24-07, 05:12 PM Well since I have recently been diagnosed with Inattentive ADD, it has brought me to start looking at my family history.
Although my mother has never been diagnosed with anything I have come to realize after learning all about the ADHD symtoms , that my mother could possibly be someone who might have it and she dont even realize it.
Heres a little about her:
-A nervous person.
-Can talk your ear off which most of the time annoys the hell out of people.
-Very disorganized and is a pack rat, has stacks of papers piled up on kitchen table and counters. House is a mess all the time.
- Does not like to clean her house, gets tired alot.
- Talks to herself all the time.
- Seems to get short fused about things easily.
- Alcoholic...
So what do you girls/guys think? It makes me wonder.

January 2002</center>
We, the undersigned consortium of international scientists, are deeply concerned about the periodic inaccurate portrayal of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in media reports. This is a disorder with which we are all very familiar and toward which many of us have dedicated scientific studies if not entire careers.
Yada yada yada yada yada......
The central psychological deficits in those with ADHD have now been linked through numerous studies using various scientific methods to several specific brain regions (the frontal lobe, its connections to the basal ganglia, and their relationship to the central aspects of the cerebellum). Most neurological studies find that as a group those with ADHD have less brain electrical activity and show less reactivity to stimulation in one or more of these regions. And neuro-imaging studies of groups of those with ADHD also demonstrate relatively smaller areas of brain matter and less metabolic activity of this brain matter than is the case in control groups used in these studies.
These same psychological deficits in inhibition and attention have been found in numerous studies of identical and fraternal twins conducted across various countries (US, Great Britain, Norway, Australia, etc.) to be primarily inherited. The genetic contribution to these traits is routinely found to be among the highest for any psychiatric disorder (70-95% of trait variation in the population), nearly approaching the genetic contribution to human height. One gene has recently been reliably demonstrated to be associated with this disorder and the search for more is underway by more than 12 different scientific teams worldwide at this time.

A little more research for ya.
On a less scholarly level - hell, yeah, she could! I'm pretty sure mine does. Altho now she has Alz's on top of it. But I look back at my childhood with the knowledge I now have, and I can see my Mom's untreated inattentive ADD and depression very clearly. Doesn't make it hurt less, but I can hurt for her now, too.
I think a good portion of my relatives have undiagnosed ADD!!
jeremynd 08-25-07, 02:07 AM Yea its almost like since back in the 60's or whatever there was not much known about ADHD so alot of people went untreated and turned to alcohol and drugs to self medicate. Out of most of my moms siblings, I have noticed she has had the toughest time in life. For example, back in the late 80's she went to business college for somekind of secretary degree but she never used it, she still talks about maybe getting back into it, but she never does (Procrastinates). Today you can find her folding laundry at the dry cleaning shop.
Kinda sad when you think about it.
4gotAgain 08-25-07, 02:31 AM yeah i think my dad might have ADHD or some other kind of mental problem. He was diagnosed with dislexia when he was younger and is so focused on business, i come home at night and he doesnt ever talk to me or anything because his focus is on the business records, he's a deep thinker as well but he does not have any other symptoms that i can think of. he always says how much i annoy him and stuff so he probabluy doesnt relate to my adhd.
one of my bros has almost the same personality as me, forgets everything everywhere. He has left his keys and phone over at our place so many times haha. He has other traits of adhd as well but he manages it.
sorry to hear that jeremy..does she enjoy her job? i think the most important thing is enjoying the job you work in. Money doesnt matter if your life is a living hell working somewhere you hate...hmmm well yeah i guess i cant talk about that much..thats what my work is..
jeremynd 08-25-07, 03:27 AM Well I know for a fact she hates her job as her body is so worn out after work that she dont leave the couch much on the weeknights after work.
For the first time today I actually talked to her about ADHD and how I think she might have it. I pretty much named off all the stuff I notice about her and how she has alot of the symptoms. I told her to go talk to her doctor about it. I doubt she will though.

im going this thursday for a checkup...i know i have ADHD just getting some medication. i realy really need it ay.I was diagnosed by my therapist about 2 weeks ago after my girlfriend forced me to go see him. I basically told him what was wrong with me and he said I am InAttentive ADD.
They put me on the strattera to start with, great, I am willing to try it. But I am about 85% sure Adderall is going to be my life/relationship saver.
4gotAgain 08-25-07, 03:43 AM yeah i totally know what you mean! so strattera isnt really working for ya then? what makes adderall better?
im having alot of problems at the moment to and cant wait to be medicated..read my post in add general topic (not sure if thats what its called) under the name ADHD and other problems.
jeremynd 08-25-07, 11:17 AM yeah i totally know what you mean! so strattera isnt really working for ya then? what makes adderall better?
Since I have started the strattera I can no longer have a good nights sleep. I am tossing and turning all night.
I have read some online case studies and they have pointed out that Amphetamines (Adderall) are the best thing to treat someone like myself who has InAttentive ADD. Basically since my mind works at a very slower pace, I am guessing the adderall would give my mind that boost that it needs.
