Hi All,
This is my first post here. My husband was just diagnosed a week ago with ADHD and IED (Intermittent Explosive Disorder). It's been a long time in coming, but we're finally dealing with it. He doesn't have time in his work day to post, so I'm the information gatherer. :)

Okay, he just started generic Adderall IR this morning. It's a 10 mg tablet. He's ~147-150 lbs. The psychiatrist recommended starting there once per day or even halving the pills to 5 mg if necessary.

He has been emailing me throughout the day with how he's doing after the one 10 mg tablet this morning (he had toast and water first). He felt like he was flying after he took it, likening it to 3 Mountain Dews at once. He said his pulse is up, and his legs are getting tired from moving so much.

Does this sound right for a first day? Will this subside, do you think?

Being that we have a long weekend in front of us, I think he's going to halve the pills for the next three days and try just 5 mg in the morning and see if the physiological effects lessen.

He's not on anything else, for the record.

Any comments or experiences would be helpful. I don't know whether this is a med. thing or simply a dose thing.
Thanks,
Jen

It's ok to start at 10mgs, but titrating up (starting small and gradually increasing dose) is the best way to figure out the optimal dose. To decrease side effects, 5mgs be easier to start off with for him.

First day sounds on par - although what do you mean by flying? as in getting things done? or euphoric?

If it helps any, you can find a simple explation of the titrating up process HERE (http://www.addforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34796). Hope it helps you and your husband!

He said he doesn't feel any better focus but has been productive because he feels driven, or something like that. (Much the way caffeine works for him but longer in duration.) I'm wondering if the side effects are masking the therapeutic benefit. I think he wants to try the 5 mg over the weekend and see if his body will adjust.
