What is the maximum dosage of adderall allowed? I get 40mg of adderall ir a day (20mg 2x a day) but it is not enough. my first dose usually wears off between 2-3 hours after i take it, so i try to take it as late as possible and i end up doing nothing in the mornings with my 2 kids or chores i should be doing. I have tried telling my psych. doctor that i dont think it is working good enough for me thinking she would increase my dose, but she just took it me off it and put me on ritalin and i told her it did nothing and then she took me off everythin all together. i went back to her and basically told her i had to be on the adderall that i noticed a significant difference without it. I basically had to beg her in other terms and she put me back on 40mg saying that 40 is the highest dose she can prescribe. But on this site i see people getting higher doses. and now i just have to act like everything is fine and dandy with the 40mg even though it doesnt last. i just dont want her to take me off the dose i have. Could i see my primary doctor and ask her if she can give me a higher dose? Thanks for any help.

I think 60mg is the normal max given....but my doc gives me 90 mg (3x30) IR a day. whiich works pretty good. I get about 3 hours per pill with generic "RANBAXY" ones. Find another doctor... one who will listen to you and properly perscribe a dosage that works for you.

There is no allowable limit for Adderall. 60mg-90mg is common and some folks here are at 120mg.

Insurance or a pharmicist might raise an issue if you were being prescribed something crazy like 400mg a day or something (just a wild guess).

sonicmenu gets the "stinky pinky's" so 90 is low, trust me I have been there, Barr makes a good tablet, Adderall that is, only Adderall, the most I have seen someone on is 180 mgs per day, I hit 120 then went to 150 mg of dex tabs which I take now. The insurance fits come with expense as opposed to dosage amount, I assume and dexedrine is cheap and to most people more potent in comparison to Adderall, dosage is individual and 40 mg wouldn't cut it for me in an immediate release adderall dose personally so if it's low tell the doctor it needs to be upped

I've taken dexedrine since I was 6 and am turning 27 in October... Except for a couple years of refusing them and adderall and ritalin trials I am justified by the simple fact of having been on it for so long. As far as insurance having a tantrum, it is a matter of the cost of the drug and 450 10 mg dexedrine tabs is a lot cheaper than 90 adderall tabs are, even when it is DextroStat. That's all I meant. Dexedrine is a lot Calmer than Adderall, it doesn't give you such a jitter but it can give you focus that is wonderful plus the ability to not be impulsive, that high of a dose prevents me from escalating into a manic episode. I often times will drop my dose for a few days because I have issues with potentially starving to death because it strips my appetite and I don't have a tolerance to that effect.

glad it works for you. I understand that people have a large difference in their doses needed I had just never heard of someone taking that much before.

Most doctors understand that 60mg. is just not enough for some people with a high tolerance, and are therefore more than willing to adjust it accordingly.

I had the same issue and my doc switched me to the regular Adderall. I take 20mg three times a day. That did the trick.

Yeah that's a whopper of a dose but it works and I have an ADD buddy who takes 210 mg of Adderall now, which I think is high compared to my whopper of a dose.

I was recently diagnosed and have been testing out different doses of Adderall. I find that 20mg seems to be a good amount, but noticed that my insurance does not offer XR in 40mg (that would be the equivalent of 2 doses of 20mg, correct?). Does anyone know whether XR is available in 40 mg? If not, do people just use 2 x 20mg (taken at the same time) of the XR per day? Would that be better than 2 x 20 of IR (one in the am and one in the pm) per day?

Thanks for your help!

However, you may take the 40mg dose of Adderall XR by taking 2 x 20mg (either at the same time, or spread out- per your doctor's instructions).

Would that be better than 2 x 20 of IR (one in the am and one in the pm) per day?
This is really up to the individual. Different combos work for different people.

I do not know which doctor you should see but another doctor who knows more about ADD in adults would probably be beneficial.
