View Full Version : Left side swollen and tongue tingling
Brigette0615 09-15-07, 12:38 PM A few months ago I notice some parts of my left side, arm & neck, was swollen. Now it's getting worst. My left arm is red and have stripes. My tongue and sometimes left side of the body is tingling. I notice all this happens a few hours after taking Adderall and kind of go away at night. I'm taking Adderall XR since October 2006. Since May 2007 my dose is 20mg/morning and 20mg/afternoon. I don't take it as prescrib though, I usually take 40mg in the morning and sometimes add a 20mg in the afternoon.
Can anyone tell me if they had any of the symptomes I'm having right now? Also are my symptomes due to the fact my body is over stimulate because of too much Adderall in my body?
I'm seeing my doctor Wednesday. I hope she wont stop me from taking Adderall cause I don't think I can live without it. I know it was stupid of me to take too much Adderall at one time but it seems the medication doesn't work if I don't do that.

Brigette - I don't like the sounds of THAT! That sounds like the symptoms a person gets when they have AN INFECTION that is TRAVELING UP THE ARM (where it will soon get to the heart and be a possibly FATAL situation)!!! You said this goes away each night???? If the arm redness w/stripes just started - I'd go to the E.R. right away!!!
Please let me know what's going on with that arm if you are still at home browsing this thread. I am very worried that you might be in a dangerous situation!!!!
Sincerely,
Sue
Scattered 09-15-07, 05:11 PM I totally second what Sue said. Call a doctor - today if possible. I'd really encourage you to talk to a doctor before taking your next dose of medication. Whether that is an infection, a heart problem, an allergic reaction to your medication or whatever -- it doesn't sound good.
Take care!
pedalpounder 09-15-07, 05:51 PM Are the red stripes shaped like a target? If so, it sounds like lyme disease (a bacterial infection usually caused by tick bites) which is 100% curable IF IT'S STILL IN EARLY STAGE. Could also be Multiple Sclerosis or transverse Myelitis and any number of other things!
Get yourself to a doctor today, don't wait till wednesday! Plus, if you go to the ER, your doctor wouldn't need to know... but you should tell your doctor EVERYTHING! He wants you to feel good, he wants your ADD to be treated, but he won't let you DIE or become INCAPACITATED as a result of medication!
In my completely unprofesional, untrustable opinion, I don't think it's drug-related. Get thee to a doctor!

But my symptoms appear only a few hours after taking Adderall and fade away around bed time. If it will be an infection my arm will always be red and my tongue always tingling. I do believe the symptoms I'm having are due cause of too much Adderall I took in a short periode of time. I really want to stop taking it, I'll try tomorrow. My concern though is how I will feel without any Adderall for one day. I don't think I'll be able to fonction and will have to sleep all day. I have two young kids to take care of, I'm really worry. Can anyone recommend some kind of supplement or herbal remedy to help me cope without Adderall.
QueensU_girl 09-15-07, 11:30 PM I think Sue was talking about a lymphadenopathy.
This can happen when a person gets a cut on their hand, etc.
They'll get a localized infection, which then starts to go systemic -- causing a red line up their arm, and tender lymph nodes (e.g. armpit, neck), etc.
I don't think this is an infection, however, as you yourself mentioned that you can attribute it to Adderall ingestion.
Perhaps you have a sensitivity to the dyes or fillers or binders in it? Or some processing chemical?
I think you are wise to see what happens if it is d/continued for a weekend, etc. (e.g. if this pattern of symptoms stops, it just might be the Adderall or another ingredient in it.)

Brigette, All of your symptoms sound worrisome, even if they go away mostly by the end of the day. They could all be a number of things. I would go to the ER, or call a nurse line or something right away. None of those symptoms you want to mess with AT ALL.
If you are interested in something non-medication that may help with ADHD, check out some of posts on the miscellaneous section of the boards. My son is not able to take the stimulants, so I am pretty well-versed on what's out there that works for some, holds promise, and what is legit or not. Let me know if there is anything I can help you with.
Best wishes with your strange symptoms, though.

As far as supplements go -- the best researched one is Omega III fatty acid from fish oil -- Dr. Hallowell (author of Driven to Distraction) says if you just take one supplement, that should be the one. I found it really helped level out my moods and improved my overall clarity of mind over time.
Supplements that also have some research indicating that ADDers are typically short on them include Magnisium and Zinc. A good book on the subject is call The ADD Nutrition Solution by Marcia Zimmerman. I don't follow everything she says, but have found a number of suggestions helpful. Delivered from Distraction by Hallowell and Ratey also has helpful suggestions as does Healing ADD by Daniel Amen.
Exercise isn't a supplement but it does naturally increase the dopamine and seratonin in the brain for several hours (about like a short acting Ritalin), so it needs to be done several times a day, but even 10 minutes can help. Hallowell and Ratey say it's like taking a dose of Prozac and Adderall holistically.
Take care and please see the doctor!:)
Brigette0615 09-23-07, 10:07 PM Thank you all so much for your help, I really appreciate it.
As for my heath issues goes I'm feeling much better then last week. I've seen my doctor last Wednesday and she thinks the reason my left arm looks bigger it's because I'm using it to carry my daughter and ended up builting muscles. Talk about a shock! All these months I was worrying for nothing?!
I beleive also all the bad symptomes I had were due to the fact I didn't eat very well. Sometimes I could had been all day without eating and maybe nibble a little something in the evening. All this eventually caught up with me and I just felt so depress and my body was aching a lot. A few days ago I started to keep up a schedule of what I eat during the day. I notice a huge change on how I felt when eating during the day and not just in the evening.
I will definately look up the books on ADD and diet. I'm sure it will help a lot.
Thanks again for you guys concerns and help!:)

Scattered 09-26-07, 05:42 PM What did she say about your tongue tingling and the red streaks on your arm?
Brigette0615 09-29-07, 12:38 PM Actually my tongue tingling is due to the fact that I have an absess in my month. She said the red streaks, which were not that red when I went to the appointment, are cause I'm carrying my daughter too often from that arm. I use my right hand/arm to do things around the house cause it's the strong one. Since my daughter always wants me to hold her I have to use my weak hand/arm to carry her which is too much height for me to handle. So house work right arm/carry daughter left arm. Maybe I'm spoiling her too much?:p She's over a year old now, hopefully she'll walk soon.:)
