My son is in the 4th grade. he was tested and we were told he had add comon type last year while he was in 3rd. The only reason we put him on medicine is because he was scared of failing. He is the type that enjoys doing good in school and getting good grades.
We were told he needed to be put on a 504 which would give him extra help in school. He still goes off into his own little world. When you tell him things he still has problems understanding. an explanation of something can last forever to get him to understand. Also when told to do something he will need it repeated back to him because he will forget
The doctor also thinks he might have a compulsive disorder and impulsivity.
The problem I am having is the school is denying him the 504. He is getting notes sent home saying he is not paying attention after everything has been explained to the teacher.
Is there a website out there that tells me my sons rights in education. Or what else I need to do. Because I have been told I have to take it up with the school board because my son is not getting horrible grade (that is there reason for denying him)
I just don't know where to go from here and I want my son to get an education. Thank You, Heide

It's not just the grades, but his performance in the classroom. If his ADHD is affecting that he should qualify (I know, I just went through this).

I would try going to the district level before you jump to the school board. Explain in no uncertain terms that you are not going to take no for an answer. If you have to, tell them you will go to the media as well (no district wants bad press).

We just went through all of this for my son for an IEP. Hell and high water, and lots of calls getting less nice as time went on. Oddly enough, right now he also doesn't qualify, but he is actually behaving in class this school year. When we started all of this school was a nightmare (home too alot of the times). After finding the right medications and taking him to play theropy every other week, he is making remarkable progress.

I don't know all the specifics of 504 plans, but you can always post in the parenting section of the Forum. I know there are loads of people there who can help too. :)
